One good thing I did was to install ceiling fans (in addition to air-con) everywhere. Often, you just want a fan to cool things down, and do not want to turn on the aircon. It is quite untidy to place standing fans all over. However, the installation of the ceiling fan in the living area proved to be a challenge. My ceiling here is 6.09m with another 0.21m false ceiling. Originally, we wanted a Haiku but the new agent in Singapore raised the price to an unreasonable level. I also found out subsequently that for Haikus, the rod is fixed length. The agent then recommended me the Big A.S.S. Fan (the type you see at MRT stations). I needed to engage a PE to oversee the installation! He must be mad. In the end, we settled for the Vento Uragano. Really good choice. Good wind. Quiet. I had to rent a scaffold to allow the installer to reach the ceiling. Two installers were needed as this fan (together with rod) was also heavy. I had specified a 9 feet rod, which (together with fan motor's 1 foot) would have put the fan at a respectable 10 feet from the ground. The supplier brought only a 6 feet rod, claiming this is the longest they have. So, now I have a very long ladder (10 steps) and this barely allows me to touch the blades for cleaning. Is there is fan blade cleaning rod? P.S. I have since bought an even taller ladder, the Little Giant Ladder. Read about my ladders here. Although fan came with remote control, installer advised me against using it as the remote receiver is at the base of the fan at ceiling level. So, if there is something wrong with the remote, I have to rent scaffolding to reach it. So, we installed the simple regulator switch which apparently can last a long time. This is the dining area. At our previous place, we could only sit a maximum of 8 persons around our table comfortably. This time, we went for a glass table which could sit 8 persons normally but extendable at both ends to sit up to 14. Unfortunately, if we extend both ends, the place is a bit cramped, so we normally extend only one end, which means we sit a maximum of 12 persons. This area is one where our viewpoints clashed with our ID's. He insisted on a hanging light and almost fainted when we wanted a fan with a light. Nobody puts a fan above the dining table, he said. The food will get cold. Anyway, we ignored him and chose the Vento Libellula for the fan here. The design is nice and the two blade is unique. Specifications looked ok, but unfortunately, the wind is lacking. Not a good buy. Originally, I wanted the Vento Sole here. Not sure if it would have been better. Both fans give us wind and light.- 686 replies

First, pictures of my living area. Highlight would be the indoor koi pond right in the middle with a vertical garden which extends to my 3rd floor. Previously, this was an airwell enclosed with sliding glass doors. This was what the place looked like during renovations. On how my vertical garden works, read here. As to how I reach my fan and vertical garden, check out my write-up on ladders.- 686 replies

We finished our rather major renovations few months back but just found time to share some pictures. We engaged an ID but in the end, he was doing mainly the wet works (hacking, cementing, marble, tiles, electrical, plumbing etc) and playing more the role of a project co-ordinator. We engaged specialist contractors directly for many parts of the works (cabinets, kitchen, wardrobe, glass works, painting, landscape, pond etc) with my better half doing a lot of the "interior designing" herself! The result is not too bad. Learnt quite a number of things which we can share. This will also serve as a record of our renovation journey. Please excuse me if my posts are not in chronological order, "terbalik" or all over the place. Did you actually see this lock in Mustafa? I followed your advice and took a trip there today just to buy this lock. I could not find it. The person in charge of hardware said they don't sell it and he has never seen it.
-
At my previous place, I bought my mul-t-lock from Shanghai Tong Lee along Jalan Sultan. They keys came with a credit card size card. I was expressly told that to duplicate my keys, I need to produce that card. It seems like authorised distributors will not make duplicates without that card. But I gather from what you said that some of them will make duplicates without the card?

I searched high and low for this vase to replace my old one which was cracked. Went to all fish farms, nurseries & vase suppliers at every corner of Singapore but could not find a similar vase. They were either not green, or did not have the 3 frogs at the rim. Eventually, my wife found the supplier overseas. It cost us only US$56 each but shipping, insurance and cargo clearance added S$900 to the bill ! Just in case the vase was damaged during shipment, we bought 3 pieces. One piece has been installed (see the picture of the installed vase), leaving the other two (new, unused on the ground). The vase can be used as a water feature (as in my case for my koi pond) or simply as a planter. Selling at cost at S$350 each of S$600 for both. Vase is about 60 cm (2 feet) high and 58 cm wide at the widest part. Please sms 96866768 if interested. Self-collect from Upper East Coast. [/url[/url

Anyone knows where and for how much I can duplicate this key? I went to a few key duplication shops including Mister Minit and all of them not able to do it.
-
You cannot compare the two. Like comparing Mercedes with Toyota. Both are good. Depends on your priorities: Kdk more expensive Kdk more reputed Fanco more common Only Fanco has add-on lights Kdk fan rods fixed length Fanco has more choices Heard that Fanco after sales better There are also other brands similar to fanco eg amasco. Depends on what you want.
-
Malaysian V56 & V60 do not come in white. Some of the cheaper models do.
-
Prices quoted are cash basis. Not sure if shop accepts credit card but certainly if so, the price would be higher. Tax referred to is Singapore GST., which is currently 7%.
-
Slowth Based on prices reported by users, Yes kdk fans appear slightly cheaper. But unless you are buying several units, it may be better to make your decision based on which shop is more convenient to go. I believe Yes sells all types of fans. Easiest is to just call them to check. Number given in my earlier post.
-
Jojorock Only Fanco & Amasco fans can have bright lights on the fan. Kdk fans do not have them. The led lights on some Kdk models are for aethestics only. No lighting at all.

Apart from the fact that your structure may run foul of the MCST's by-laws, it may also be a breach of URA regulations. So, you do take a risk if you decide to go ahead.

Are you still using your Osim device? Is it the iEcologi or something like that? I threw it away after some time. Will never buy such a device again. In theory, it is very good. But then after a while you realise that it is very heavy to lug around, especially if your place is not single storey. Then, the device breaks down very often, especially the handle part with all the controls. And they dare tell me that part is considered accessory and not covered by warranty. And to think I paid a bomb for the device and a lot for the extended warranty (enough to buy a new vacuum cleaner of other brand). And I also discovered that this device is actually OEM product. It's OEM from a Italian company (Polti). The last time I checked, Karcher, Akira and another compay (forgot name, Akira type of company) also sells the same or similar model. Just colour, brand and price different. Now we just use a handheld mop (those simple but expensive type from supermarket) and vacuum cleaner (Karcher). I think in the end, this is better.

5 out of 18 is almost 30% failure rate! Goodness. My place installed with 43 PLC downlights 2 years ago, and so far none spoilt except for some bulbs and one unit making some noise (don't know why) but noise went away after I removed one of the bulbs. New place I am installing LED downlights on the understanding that it is more durable and in the long run will save on energy consumption. But your experience is scary. Yeah, most shops tell me LED lights cannot repair (except for driver) and no warranty. But over the weekend, strangely one shop along Jalan Besar offered 10 year warranty on their LED lights! But their prices are about double what I could get outside. The salesman claims their LED lights (from Taiwan) quality very different from those China made ones. Don't know whether it is worth paying the extra price. Or maybe just stick to PLC!
-
I agree with MsPiPi on Alex from A Lighting. I bought all my lights from him. However, for LED cove lighting, Alex advises it is cheaper to get from Sim Lim. Anybody knows any reliable shops there?

I am renovating my new place. I find the cost of electrical works quoted rather high. My place is three storeys and I want concealed wiring, so I understand the cost will be much higher. I am willing to pay the higher price but just want it to be reasonable. QUOTED: Lighting Point $58 for wiring $10 for installation of normal lights, $50 for hanging lights SCV $180 for wiring Single 13A $100 for wiring & $28 for face-plates Double 13A $120 for wiring & $28 for face-plates Heater $190 for wiring Ceiling Fan $60 for normal height $320 for high ceiling Cooker Hood $95 for wiring Induction Hob (30A) $420 for wiring?? 2-way Switch $85 for wiring 20A isolator $300 for wiring Outdoor power socket $190 Cat 5 data point $150 Cat 6 data point $230 Shift Lightning conductor $1,250?? For wiring, do contractors lay completely new wires from DB to the lighting/power point? If that is the case, I can understand the high cost. But in my case, he is merely tapping from nearby points. Furthermore, there are existing light points, just that maybe the numbers and location will now be different.

Price from Singapore agent is now S$1,177. There is a guy on this forum selling at $1,135.

Extend The Fibre Optic Cable
Ks Toh replied to velv's topic in Internet , Digital line, Bandwidth & Network
My impression, but I am not sure, is that the fibre optica cable cannot be extended. So, you have to put your modem at your curent location (living room) and then connect your various services (e.g. from bedroom to living room) via network cable. But I could be wrong. So if anyone knows how to extend the fibre optical cable, I would also like to know. -
How do you guys install ceiling fans onto a ceiling with existing false ceiling? My ID / Contractor wants to install onto the false ceiling. He says he will erect timber support to hold it. But two fan shops I went to say the fan should be intalled directly onto the concrete ceiling, with the rod protruding through the false ceiling. This means I have to purchase those fans with a longer rod. But my friend says should construct a metal support from concrete ceiling to the false ceiling, like those used to hang a projector. The fan is then installed onto this support. This is what his contractor apparently did, although we cannot verify this since the false ceiling is now covered up.
