  1. Unless you have a special reason, it is illogical to do (1). Your ID must have made a mistake, and tried to justify. Cool. I have a Bosch drill since my first renovation, and it is still working fine after so many years. Really a good investment for me.
  2. I have done a marble feature wall before, so I will share with you my experience. Unless you bought a slab and the slab is really big enough to cover your entire wall and your contractor is able to mount the entire piece as one piece, which is unlikely, you are going to have a feature wall made up of several pieces. Since your chosen marble has a lot of grain, it is almost impossible to align all the tiles such that the lines flow naturally. If you don't mind that, then it is ok. If you mind that, then it is better to choose a piece with less grain.
  3. Thanks. Not sure if I want to pursue the matter. Irritates me but I don't think there is any solution.
  4. Normally, the colours look lighter when you view only a small section. When painted onto a larger wall, the colour will appear darker. This applies to car colours too.
  5. I have Toto WC. Just got your info, I opened up the water tank. No floating ball and piston but also no Gerberit system. The mechanism seems to be Toto's own system.
  6. Based on my limited experience, ideally the door frame concrete/cement should be one solid piece. Uf you repair, the plaster cement should be one continuous solid piece. If you affix the door frame and then try to fill the holes up with cement or plaster, the infilled parts will not be strong at all. It's merely cosmetic. After some time, especially with banging of doors, these parts will start dropping off, leaving gaps between the concrete and the door frame.
  7. I am no longer able to measure the distance. This was my previous place. But as can be seen from the picture, I recall the space was just wide enough to put a small dustbin (from Howards) and a toilet roll holder. I recall that I had to specially choose a toilet roll holder where the roll is placed vertically (usual is horizontal). Although there is sufficient space to mount the toilet roll holder horizontally, it would be difficult to insert the toilet roll. I do not remember any problems with the leg space. On shifting the WC, I have no idea how people do it. The WC outlet is bored through the floor slab (into the unit below) and so the location of this outlet is fixed and practically impossible to shift. The most that can be done is to orientate the WC to face a different direction, while still using the same outlet. Or alternatively, if you place your WC at a different location, you need to have some fairly large PVC piping to carry the discharge back to this outlet. Side elevation drawing of a typical WC here.
  8. Sorry, not able to take a complete picture of the toilet. Camera not wide angled enough. To the right is my vanity top / basin. I took this picture from the toilet door. For the shower area, I only have a fixed glass panel that prevents water splash to the rest of the toilet.
  9. I never used my Brandt hood (coz I use my outdoor kitchen). So I have turned it on only a few times for the past 2 years. But just the other day when I turned it on, it suddenly stopped. I had to call the extended warranty hotline to arrange for repairs. I think the repairman said something to the effect that "the starter spoilt". I do use my other Brandt hob almost every day and it is working fine. Brandt is ok. I think it is the less premium sister of De Dietrich? i would say all cooker hoods spoil after some time. Yes, if the horizontal fixed glass panel is long enough, past your body and usual landing zone of the water spray, you do not need a door on the right. I have done it before. But you do need a kerb (unless your shower area is stepped down) to prevent water from flowing out.
  10. I am glad you bought extended warranty for your fridge. Nowadays, fridges are build to break down just after their manufacturer warranty period. Mine just broke down but luckily I bought 5 year extended warranty. I always do.
  11. I am using Brandt although not the same models. From my experience, cooker hobs seldom spoilt but cooker hoods (including my Brandt hood) do break down. So, you should purchase extended warranty for the hood. This is just my point of view.
  12. If you see the Silestone people again, can you find out whether they have a non-discoloration guarantee for X years? My kitchen and toilets were supposed to be all white or white/black so I am a little irritated.
  13. Just so that you know, I used really white Silestone counter top for my kitchen and also toilets. Initially it was so white that I complained that my Toto basin was off white. Two years on, I find that my Toto is still looking as white as day one but my Silestone has all changed colour to off white.
  14. I discovered two other places where my speed was stuck at 100Mbps even though the speed at the wall network point was 200Mbps. In my hall, I realised that the cable connecting my Gigabit switch to the wall network point was an old Cat 5 cable, with only 4 wires (1, 2, 3 & 6) and therefore capable of supporting speeds up to 100Mbps only! No wonder the speed was being throttled at 100Mbps. You guys should check all your wires to ensure that they are at least Cat 5e and above, Cat 6 preferable. Apparently, Cat 5 labelled cables manufactured in recent years also meet Cat 5e specifications but they have just not been tested or certified as such. In another room, I had used an old Buffalo WCR-HP-GN router as an access point. I did not realise that the maximum transmission rate for the Wired LAN Interface for this router is only 100Mbps. Really, your network speed is only as fast as your weakest link!
  15. Armed with a crimping tool, some RJ45 connectors bought from Sim Lim, and after watching a Youtube video, I tried to replace the connector. I failed 3 times before I succeeded on the 4th attempt: First time, while stripping the cable, i accidentally cut away one pair of wires completely. Second time, after stripping the cable, I discovered one wire was dangling loose (had been cut) Third time, I cut the wires neatly and managed to crimp the connector. But there was no internet connection! I discovered subsequently to my horror that I had put the Blue pair in 3/4 and the Green pair in 5/6 but actually the Green pair should be in 3/6 while the Blue pair should be in 4/5. I changed it. And Bingo ! I do not get 200Mbps on my iPhone all the time but I do get this speed on my MacBook if I use a wired connection.
  16. Crimping RJ45 Connector I discovered the cause of the speed drop from 200Mbps to 100Mbps in one room. I checked all the cables and found the RJ45 connector (at the router end) for this room looked different. The electrician crimped the connector wrongly. The brown/white (7) and brown (8) cables were reversed!
  17. Thanks. But I was told that nowadays, the switches are intelligent and will "switch" accordingly.
  18. Welmate also did the electrical works for my place. I checked and realised that we also used the same ID company, although the particular designer who did my place has since left the company.
  19. "There was another interested party, so I quickly passed the cheque to the agent. *fastest fingers!*" One would never know if there was really another interested buyer but this is a favourite tactic of agents. I fell for it before.
  20. The only benefit of a washer-dryer combo machine should be the space savings. Otherwise it is very troublesome when you have a lot of laundry to wash & dry. Additionally, I have an unverified belief that such machines consume more power. This heat pump technology sounds interesting. Does it mean there is no hot air exhaust? What is the energy rating? My 7kg normal dryer is 2,250W.
  21. The fibre termination point (TP) is located inside your house, not outside. If OpenNet (actually the entity is now called NetLink Trust) is not ready to lay the fibre to your TP, but you need to commence your renovation works, your contractor can lay a concealed string or wire from outside your house to your desired TP location. When the NetLink Trust contractor comes to do the fibre installation, he will just use the string or wire to pull the fibre into your house. Read here.
  22. If it is just the aircon water discharge pipe, it is a very small pipe. I would just leave it exposed, or paint to wall colour. Much better than trunking, which is bulky.
  23. How much did you have to pay per point to change from Cat 5e to Cat 6? Although I specified Cat 6 for all my points, my electrician convinced me to accept Cat 5e for 2 of my points. I now regret it but nothing can be done.
  24. Testing your Network for Connectivity and Speed The other day, I was running various speed tests for VPN. It suddenly occurred to me that I was constantly getting wired connection speeds of just below 100Mbps in my master bedroom, when I had recently upgraded my StarHub plan to 200Mbps. So I set about to ascertain if there was a problem. I first checked the speed coming into my modem and main router. I was getting speeds of around 200Mbps. StarHub did not shortchange me. Next, I checked the speeds at the network points in my other rooms. It is still round 200Mbps. But when I checked the speed at the network point in my room, where I spent most of my time, the speed dropped to below 100Mbps. Arrrgggghhhh!! I realised that something had gone wrong with the wiring from my main router to the faceplate in my room. Hopefully it is the plug or faceplate, both of which I can change. But if the problem lies in the cable, I am screwed. The entire cable is concealed all the way from my ground floor to my room on the highest floor.
