  1. For the yard roof, I was quoted a substantial sum to replace the entire roof. But this time, repairs were possible as I could access the roof from my 2nd level room. So, I chose to repair rather than replace, at a substantially lower cost. The water leakage was apparently from the polycarbonate joint termination against the wall. For the kitchen, the water was apparently coming in from some electrical wire casing on the RC ledge just outside the kitchen. The contractor quoted the following repairs, Surface Preparation (Item 1) followed by Waterproofing Works (Item 2):
  2. Leaking Roofs Everytime it rains, some parts of my roof in various places start leaking. The roof on my roof terrace leaks in several places. However, all the contractors whom I have asked say it is almost impossible to repair. First, they will have to climb up the roof on the roof terrace and it is a risky job which not many workers want to do. Secondly, because it is made of hollow polycarbonate, they have to step on the roof to repair the leaks. For every hole they repair, they may create a few other holes. Solution is to change the entire roof terrace, they all advise. But the amount they quoted was astronomical so I decided to live with the leaks in my roof terrace. I just shift the furniture (which are outdoor furniture anyway) around to avoid the leaking areas. However, I have no choice but to repair the roof above my yard. Whenever it rains, the water comes dripping down, totally drenching my washing machine / dryer area, and the floor. Luckily, I have the Ikea stainless steel table that totally covers the machines.
  3. In a landed property, there are lots of things you can do. However, you also encounter many problems which you do not have to deal with in a HDB or apartment. Currently, I have to deal with leaking roofs, inter-floor water seepage, spalling concrete and power trips. I am documenting the repair processes for my own record as well as to assist others who may have similar problems.
  4. I installed this type of LED down lights (with transparent border) throughout my entire house. After installation, and when I need to change some of them, i noticed a big problem. Just so that you know. http://www.renotalk.com/forum/topic/62505-top-kew-drive/?p=828197
  5. Yes, the study is definitely the best location in your case. Furthermore, in the future, you may add network storage, routers, switches and other devices and these will be at this location.
  6. Hi, great that you found photobucket useful. I also think so but photobucket has a bandwidth limit which I hit every now and then. So, now I use Flickr instead! For the rest of my pictures. See here: http://www.renotalk.com/forum/topic/62505-top-kew-drive/?p=857347
  7. Including Pictures in your Post To include pictures in your post, you need to invoke the command in your post. This works for Renotalk as well as many other blogs or forums. You can get the IMG link on your Photobucket or Flickr account on your computer. On Mobile, you can get it from the Photobucket app but I cannot find it on the Flickr app. On Flickr, you can only copy the URL. Not sure if you can just add the IMG command to this URL. The IMG link provided by Photobucket is very neat. I like it. On the other hand, Flickr adds text like "by so-and-so on Flickr" which I always delete before posting. I would have happily gone on to use Photobucket forever but i hit a problem. Photobucket gives me 2 + 8 = 10 GB storage (not sure how I got the extra 8GB) but I am only using 0.5 GB. However, there is a monthly 10GB bandwidth limit which I hit every now and then, when too many people visit this blog. After that, I believe the Photobucket pictures will be blocked from showing on this blog. That is the only reason why I am now using Flickr to store the newer pictures. I have no clue as to Flickr's storage and bandwidth limits, if any. Like I said, Flickr is rather confusing to me. P.S. October 2018 - Never trust these "free" cloud storage services. They entice you to upload all your pictures for free. Then after several years when all your photos are up there, they start asking you to pay or they will delete everything. First Microsoft's OneDrive. Now Photobucket. In protest, I refuse to give in So, if you do not see any of my pictures, it means Photobucket has blocked access. Just message me to let me know. Thanks.
  8. This is not exactly renovation material but it is related to the process of documenting your renovations. Posting using Mobile These days, most of us have smart phones and no longer need to bring along a camera. But after taking the pictures, some of us still transfer the pictures to our computer, and then post from the computer. Actually, it is possible to do everything from your smart phone, and this is what I sometimes do. You can even include pictures in your post. Get an Image Hosting Account and Download their App You need to sign up with an image hosting account. There are plenty but I am using Photobucket and Flickr. Then you need to download their apps to your mobile phone. Someone also recommended Google+ but I could not figure out how to use it. Renotalk itself allows image hosting but the storage capacity appears to be paltry, is so difficult to use and so I just gave up. After Taking Picture, Upload Picture to Hosting Account You can upload the pictures using the App on your mobile. One very important tip is to be organised when you first set up your account. Do create Albums for each topic e.g. Renovations, Holidays etc. If you upload everything into one common basket, it will be difficult to locate your photos next time. Even if you upload to the wrong album, or to the root directory, you can still move the photos to the correct album. Here, I have to say that Photobucket is much easier to use. I find Flickr a bit confusing. Photobucket behaves like a image/video hosting site. Flickr behaves like social media site. Below you see my Albums on Photobucket followed by Flickr:
  9. Good to know that you got a refund. But really there is no need for you to make up a story, if you are perfectly entitled to the refund.
  10. Hi lemoncandy What did they advertise this hood as being capable of? Let us know whether this hood works as well as it promises to be capable of. I had a very bad experience with another Fujioh model but to be fair, that does not mean that this model is not good. My experience: http://www.renotalk.com/forum/topic/44531-fujioh-ariafina-betta-bt-900-cooker-hood/?hl=%2Bfujioh+%2Bariafina
  11. For my place, I had this idea of having some kind of MRT tunnel with a cover that runs along the floor on one side of the room and even up/down the different levels. This would allow me to pull wires & cables anywhere and anytime I like. Have you seen something like this suitable for a residential property. I tried to explain to my ID, contractor and electrician but they all thought I was crazy. Anyway, I ended up doing it the traditional way, as you know.
  12. Hi this is what you should do: 1. Send the shop an email or fax setting out all that has happened, and make a reasonable demand e.g. deliver by certain date or full refund. Don't make additional unreasonable demands. Give the shop one last chance in case they have any explanation. 2. If nothing happens, proceed to lodge a claim with the Small Claims Tribunal at http://www.smallclaims.gov.sg. I am assuming that your claim is not more than S$10,000. You will get your furniture or refund, unless the company goes bankrupt. You can also go to CASE for this kind of complaint but in my opinion it is better to just go direct to small claims for this type of matter.
  13. The most important consideration for home networking is the location of your distribution point i.e. where all your cables start and branch out. I explained this in a bit more detail here: http://www.renotalk.com/forum/topic/62505-top-kew-drive/?p=835976 But in your case, you were converting from the existing telephone network, so your distribuiton point is in the db box as shown in your picture. The network you have is simply cables leading from the various rooms to this db box. There is no connection between these different cables. I assume you are using the SH supplied Home Gateway. Your Home Gateway is like a multi point extension cord. From one cable point split into many points (wireless plus 4 ports). The connection should be from TP to Optical port of ONT. From the ONT1 port of the ONT to the WAN port of the Home Gateway. As I said, only ONT1 is active. Then from the Home Gateway, you can connect up to 4 cables to your different rooms. Your home gateway will need to be in this db box, I guess. Once again, the connection should be: TP --> ONT --> Home Gateway --> the various cables to your various locations I do not believe it is possible to activate ONT2. That is reserved for other service providers. You can connect additional wireless routers at the various rooms. This is what I do for my house. But these routers must be set to "bridge" mode. The above is my limted understanding. I stand corrected.
  14. They were selling these ready planted ones for $189 each. Rather expensive. I then saw that I could buy the different items separately at a cheaper price. I bought the plant at $25. The All in One set was selling at 50%, at $79.95. Together with some Hydroton at $5.90, and some discounts, I paid only $107.76. I saved $81 through DIY. But when I went back to my car, I found this: So irritating. Parking at most nurseries is free within the nursery itself. But for this nursery, the car park is a URA car park. I forgot about it.
  15. [back to Table of Contents] Added another plant yesterday. Went to Far East Flora @Queensway and bought a Philodendron 'Imperial Green' (Common Name: Luck Pair Plant) in a Lechuza AIO Cubico Cottage 30 (White) Pot. According to some posters there, this is one of the plants that can clean the air, to beat the haze. No idea true or not. I guess all plants can help to clean the air to a certain extent. Will report back whether this thing works. P.S. One year later, this plant is still growing well! And in fact, now I have figured out how to DIY this thing. See my post later here.
  16. No need to transfer via desktop. For both Photobucket & Flickr, you can upload directly from iphone using their app. For photobucket, the app also gives me the img link so I can post off mobile with photos. For Flickr, not sure if this can be done.
  17. Your connections are wrong. The optical cable from the TP is connected to the Optical port of the ONT. From the ONT, only ONT Port 1 is active. You cannot use ONT 2, 3 or 4. Like this: http://www.renotalk.com/forum/topic/62505-top-kew-drive/?p=835980 If you list out the equipment you have and take a picture of the DB box with all the ports, then it is easier to tell you what you can do.
  18. The particular Toto model I am using has a very efficient flushing system. You can check it out at the Fullsen Toto showroom along Jalan Besar. You can see a picture and video on my blog: http://www.renotalk.com/forum/topic/62505-top-kew-drive/?p=831111
  19. No, there is nothing wrong with putting the switch at the DB box. I suggested putting the switch at the living room LAN point because I thought the new LAN point in the study is near this point, and it is probably easier to lay your LAN cable to here, rather than to the DB box. Of course if the new LAN point in the study is near the DB box, then laying the cable to the DB box makes sense. I am just wondering if this DB box is sufficient to put three devices: ONT (fibre modem), residential gateway (the wireless router supplied by your ISP) and your switch. They take up quite a bit of space. For their sizes, you can check out mine: http://www.renotalk.com/forum/topic/62505-top-kew-drive/?p=835980 There are certain advantages in putting the switch at the living room instead of this DB box. You can add more devices to the switch. For example, the switch at my living room supports the TV, sound bar, Apple TV and wireless router. If the switch is at the DB box, I guess you cannot use it much.
  20. Where is the power point to power the fibre modem? And the switch if you are putting it here as well. For your additional point in the study, you should share out not the LAN point in this box, but the LAN point in the living room, since the study is being built in the living room. From the LAN point in the living room, add the switch if necessary.
  21. Ok, I went to check my KYK machine. The display toggles between Ph and ORP. When I switch the display from Ph 9.0, it shows ORP -230 mV. [back to Table of Contents]
  22. I have used Blum as well as other types of drawer tracks. There is a great difference in quality when it comes to drawer tracks. Not so obvious when it comes to hinges.
  23. Testing my litmus paper with (from left to right) lime (calamansi) juice, tap water & dish washing liquid. Looks like there is nothing wrong with my litmus paper.
