  1. Added a few knick knacks: A doorstopper - you can order this off Amazon for < USD 20. More clocks: Guess the time zones?
  2. Just posting a pm here so others can also learn: There is no harm trying out kit you already own in the new home. The key will be to choose equipment that can pair with it. Your husband needs to check if the subwoofer is passive or active. This thread will answer many of the basic question first: http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=48382.0 Choose an AV amplifier which suits you, then go from there. Alpha Audio, KEC, Seng Heng in Adelphi; City Electronics in Sim Lim Square are good spots to check out. Audio House has some in house deals, with caveats, as I have my own reservations about them sometimes. Good luck!
  3. Very nice, I enjoy your posts, the decor you did and the little touches. How about this for a chair: (I think you can find it in Lorgans)http://www.lorgans.com/main.php?f=0 And for that poster above your bed: Perhaps you can consider a retro radio, or a nice two channel speaker system in the living room... Finally I would appreciate it if you pm the contractor's contact? I must be the 1000th person... will pass it to a good friend who is doing up a River Vally place.. thanks
  4. New addition: Got this off Tao Bao, and a friend in China shipped it over. No idea of the cost, but in general they are 1/5 the price locally. If you have friends in China, the lamps are about 1/5 the price here. Main thing is breakage in shipping and you need an adaptor for the China plugs. Voltage is the same. Also a link to some demo worthy movies that you can use in an AUDITION, not Audit of your new sound system. For example, I use Die Hard 4, the scene where the four Frenchmen attack Justin Long, lots of mid-bass and deep impact and slam. Then in the tunnel scene, there is a scene with very deep bass as the car overturns and flies over their heads. Hero is another good movie, the duel between Donnie Yen and Jet Li has lots of music, ambient sounds of raindrops and some impact and slam too. Band of Brother is a five star movie for sound, and you will find lots of little details plus good bass in many episodes. http://peteswrite.blogspot.sg/2011/01/description-of-scenes-in-demo.html The new Hunger Games disc has a sound check at the end, for 5.1 and 7.1 speakers.
  5. Just adding an article on choosing a fan + the Haiku Fan: http://peteswrite.blogspot.sg/2012/09/tips-on-choosing-fan-and-haiku-fan.html
  6. Yep... If you going to ask the cost it should be 800-1000 now. See my previous comments on installation..
  7. Winter at 1 Kaki Bukit... look for the salesman, Summer (yep, that's his name...) Should be less than $300 especially if you buy more stuff from him.
  8. Nah... even with reno, my system didn't cost that much.. buy smart, and the rest is in calibration. Most home owners who are not enthusiasts want a press button solution. For the best sound, that's not enough. Lots of elbow grease and if you are willing to put the same effort that you did into the reno, you will get good sound on less money. But most will prefer form over function...
  9. New speakers, new clocks, and new subwoofer.. My gear: http://peteswrite.blogspot.sg/2012/09/my-gear-9-2012.html
  10. New subwoofer: JL Audio f 113 - the almighty kick *** subwoofer... retails for about $4300...
  11. An article on satellite speakers: http://peteswrite.blogspot.sg/2010/03/satellite-speakers.html My link to how to buy : How to Buy and Demo a Home Theatre System will also talk about the balance of form versus function. So guys, if you want that kick *** system, suggest something that sounds good and looks decent too... for the lucky men who can get an uncompromising system, you will be the even of the rest...
  12. Just answering a pm here so others can benefit: It is best that you do some homework at the Home Theatre related websites: Buying that Home Theatre – how to demo and some suggestions http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=73638.0 Alternative hardwarezone site for tips: http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/home-theatre-audiophiles-13/tips-getting-new-ht-system-info-suggested-brands-advice-1687284.html FAQS: http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=48382.0 More info given, more info offered. Such a non-specific question like asking if the Focal Dome is good is very difficult to answer. No one knows how big is your home, what kind of music tastes etc. And things to note? Well that's what I have been posting here... And you have to judge for yourself what level of sound treatment you want. You can see what I did here: http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=114164.0 So have a look at the two links first. Then post in the forum there, and you will find some useful answers. Good luck!
  13. @kenjo: A single pH5 isn't very bright, you may need many lights if you want high Lux. I use it for mood and combine it with the lighting from my false ceiling. You will notice, most restaurants don't make dining a very bright place. @MLTR: The prices are standard for Eames Chairs. Around 1000-1500 for decent ones. Look out for sales to get it cheaper. Eg OM had a sale on them recently. If you are not in a hurry, wait for the next sale. Eames designed items are very popular, so they will be on sale every now and then. If you can afford it, an original can be bought for 5k or 6k on sale.
  14. A little advice on buying a TV on a limited budget: http://peteswrite.blogspot.sg/2012/08/tv-buying-advice-for-limited-budget.html Plus Household Nick Nacks: Shopless: http://www.shopless.com.sg/ Utensils: http://www.landex.com.sg/catalogues.html
  15. LHS is open. Suggest you ask in a hi fi forum instead of a reno thread ,eg: http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/house-displays-226/hdmi-discussion-thread-ii-%7Bconsolidated%7D-3162624.html If you post in any hi fi forum, just as you do in a reno forum.... Give More Info, Get More Info!! No budget given, no idea of the quality of your gear. What equipment will you use?? How can anyone help you... I use a $500 speaker cable for my mains, a $150 HDMI 3m cable from my Blu Ray player to my TV from Audioquest. My equipment list : http://peteswrite.blogspot.sg/2011/12/my-gear-12-2011.html Are you prepared to spend? Anyway am off, I hope someone will reply you whilst I am away. Good luck!
  16. I have limited exposure to these speakers. If your main source is the Starhub box, and it has RCA output, conceivably, it can be a source for your powered speakers. Best to ask in forums like hardwarezone, where there may be more users of form over function speakers. I am afraid I use the traditional home theatre and audhiophile gear. Cheers.
  17. There are many shops in Sim Lim Tower which sell them, just go have a look. LHS sells affordable speaker cables which you can get with banana plugs. What you buy will depend on your budget. Banana plugs come in a standard size.
  18. Some thoughts on renovating that toilet: http://peteswrite.blogspot.sg/2012/07/renovating-your-toilet.html
  19. Did a little bit of cooking recently: Seared Scallops with Wasabi and Seaweed; Chilean Sea Bass seared with Teriyaki Sauce; Boiled asparagus, and then wrapped in bacon with onion inserted and a single strawberry with sour plum insert. Second dish was a prawn asparagus stir fry item, and the last was a cod fish / Italian herbs and onion combo. Then we had lychee ice smoothie and a sour plum ice cube drink with mint leaves.
  20. Not replicas, but real stuff... mid century lamps from Denmark... - Wakeup Copenhagen Artichoke lamp in hotel Radisson Blu - Poulsen lamp in Malmöhus Castle, Sweden
  21. Doing a little home theatre sharing session: http://www.xtremeplace.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=115234.0 Please read the ground rules if you wanna come and post in the thread... Don't send me a pm here. Cheers
  22. Just sharing an important aspect of Home Theatre design and the proper usage of Rock Wool and acoustic treatment of false ceilings and feature walls: http://peteswrite.blogspot.com/2012/05/use-of-rockwool-for-home-theatre.html
  23. Doing a cookout for friends: Scallops with wasabi paste and seaweed:
