  1. Initially, I used an incandescent 60W, which is pretty powerful, but somehow, it was really dim when I put the PH5 cover on. Changed to a 100W but realized that it'll be 200W for my 2 lamps. Finally got a Philips 18W energy saver which was plenty bright and easier on the power usage. I think the PH5s really use a lot of reflections to get the light, hence the lower lumens. Is yours a PH5 or PH50? Looks like a coconut white PH50.
  2. Thanks! Really like what you did to your place, ynwa88. Very very disciplined and a superb eye for detail!
  3. Love this shot. Great looking dining table you got there. Wish I could have a round dining table, looks so cosy. Did you use a separate halogen downlight to illuminate the photograph on the wall?
  4. <3 the toilet tiles. I used to have roller blinds at my old place and we got a really clean look that you spoke about, but the problem was that whenever we opened the window, the bottom bar will clack against the frames. Have wanted to change to curtains ever since and when I got the chance, we did it. The white curtains from my place were salvaged by my wife from my sister-in-law's home. A wash and a quick edit later, they are as good as new! A little bit of discolouration, but it adds to the 'wabi-sabi' look! I think fabrics really soften up the living space.
  5. I subscribe to Apartment Therapy's RSS feed and am hooked on it. I think you and rottenramone must have scoured Singapore for all the best buys! I really couldn't find an mention of Newgate Clocks in Singapore. Will definitely check it out. The clock that I bought has a industrial look that I really love, even the typeface used on the clock face is perfect. Check out this site: http://www.utilitydesign.co.uk/mall/departmentpage.cfm/UtilityDesign/_123284/1/Clocks They have a great range of Newgate clocks and their customer service is pretty good. My condo at Toh Tuck, near Bukit Batok
  6. Thanks! Go check out www.apartmenttherapy.com they feature a lot of cool homes with very nice touches. I got my inspiration there Hope you're enjoying your new place. JS
  7. Looks like everything is shaping up. Congratulations and good luck on your move! Can't wait to see the pics. JS
  8. This.... is.... really something! Makes me wish I had explored BKK for my furnishings. Did you guys buy any big items back? Drool worthy stuff.
  9. Mine are 150W each. I don't use them at full power, maybe about 30%-40%, not sure if that saves energy.
  10. Thanks Blooie. We too didn't want to have a false ceiling as we wanted as much height as possible. The only alternative were uplights and tracklights. General lighting is provided by 2 Artemide Mini Surf halogen uplighters. The light is pretty okay, it's a bit too near the ceiling for a large enough spread, but I can live with it. While tracklights are very versatile, I don't really like the look of a track stuck on the ceiling, so I found some gallery lights with stems from Lightcraft. Cheap and it gets the job done. There are another 2 table lamps for accents which were added later. Here's the dining/living area illuminated by the uplighters. It's not as dark as the pic shows. About 300W power usage for the 2 lamps though.
  11. OMG! I shall nominate these last few posts as one of the best in RT! Salivating at the furnishings and the food! * you guys earned the 3 exclamation mark salute
  12. Wow, lucky you. Setting up the AV system is back-breaking work. I'm still waiting for your 'unveil' post when you move in! Mini projects? I'm trying to catch up on all the resting that I've sacrificed for the move. ha ha
  13. Just a quick update since I've been MIA for so long. Not sure if anybody is still tuned in... We have moved into our new home for 2 mth 2 wks and I would love to say we have truly unpacked and settled in, but the last part of the process seems to be the most difficult. We've encountered some problems so far. 1 month into our stay, I noticed a damp smell coming from the kitchen drawers under the sink. Upon checking, there was water seeping in from the tap! The plumber did not secure the kitchen tap properly. Thankfully, our contractor was very quick in rectifying the problem. I have managed to sort out the AV setup in the living room and also programmed all the universal remotes. Having been through all manner of HTPCs and Media Centres, my most favoured is the Xbox Media Centre or XBMC. I used to mod first generation Xboxes to play my AVI movie files and it worked fairly well, until the higher resolutions and larger screens started creeping in. I dumped my XBMC and tried to find a replacement, going through a whole lot of China brand as well as US brand media players. I finally settled on a mini-pc, in this case, a Mac Mini to handle all my media playing needs. I can even use it to surf the net when I'm slumped on the couch. An example of the XBMC running on Mac. I believe this iteration of the XBMC is as close to a perfect media player as it can get. Gone are the days of manually looking for cover art and synopsis. All added content are automatically pulled in and program write ups are pulled from IMDB. The venerable Mac Mini doing all the hard work. Playback of 1080p files are smooth and jump free. The newer Mac Mini's are equipped HDMI, not this one. I'm running via DVI. It's low energy consumption on standby is ideal as a 'always-on' solution. I call this my spade. An all-in-one solution for controlling the mouse and keyboard on the Mac Mini. eBay FTW!!!
  14. Thanks! My ID was quite instrumental in doing up the place as well, especially the cladding for the cabinets as well as the detailing for the kitchen door. We had some mismatch in vision at times, but in the end it was all good. I'm actually quite a 'controlled mess' kind of person and this new place is a test of my ability to keep it organised! Wifey calls me the Typhoon. I understand Mandarin, only problem is, nobody understands me when I speak it.
  15. Hey Les! How are things at Forår? Been meaning to drop by to see if you've got any new stuff. Let me know which shot you would like to use or any other angle and I'll take it for you. Or if you prefer, you can drop by and shoot it yourself! ha ha. Good to see you here man.
  16. You might want to try Mr Keng's shop at Craig Road. Saw lots of old typewriters there.
  17. Hi there, I have answered your questions in my post. :)

    Good luck!

  18. Hi there, Thanks for the compliments. Both our contractor and ID were recommendations from different friends. We liked the quality of finish for one place and the design sense of another. Having said that, I had an idea of what we wanted to achieve and got the ID to work with the contractor. I won't say that the working relationship between the 2 parties have been smooth sailing, as they were at loggerheads most of the time, but I was expecting that as it gives me the largest options. We ran into material problems during our reno, like doors being to light (hollow) and badly crafted door frames. But managed to resolve it. Check around with Defelio, timothyng27, rottenramone/striking reality, frigginfuchsia, adidaem for what they have done to their HDB apartments. I think they have managed to create a Scandinavian / Mid-Century Modern style for their apartments. We got our inspiration and decor for our place from sites like apartmenttherapy.com and freshome.com for an alternate point-of-view. Elle Decor and Vogue Living helps as well! Our ID detailed the spaces for us, but we did the decoration on our own. Happy reno!
  19. Looking good Defelio... enjoy your new house. The sound must be bouncing around like crazy now, I know that's what happened to my new place when I just moved it. The fans are unique, a little bit steampunk, but works. The sofa gives the space the perfect touch!
  20. Hey Adidaem, nice 3D pics. I quite like the sketchlike quality of it so that it draws attention on the space usage. Would love to see your place when the wetworks have been completed! JS
  21. I love the kitchen! Very apt decor touches with the use of wood, safety glass and lighting. Definitely got the look and feel for what you wanted to achieve. I'm impressed. Killer photos as well
  22. Thanks luvalist. We used an Oak veneer with a white spray paint over it. It's a natural Oak colour, I have no idea which brand but I don't think they are from Formica. Thanks I initially ordered the Arino Caprio but the store gave me the wrong item. When I insisted on the Arino Caprio, they said that it was out-of-stock. Finally got it after much delay but I have a nagging feeling that they gave me their display piece as some of the stickers (the one with the PUB ticks) were very hard to remove. I would not recommend anyone to get it from where I got it from and most shops along Jalan Besar sell them cheaper. This whole ordeal affected my completion date as well. All the best for your reno!
  23. Hi there! You've got a very unique direction for your place. Can't wait to see the end product. You can try the bookshelf wallpaper to get the look you want. JS
