Japanese Minimal/ Scandinavian Living On A Budget
frigginfuchsia replied to wowach's topic in Reno t-Blog Chat
Am really gonna look forward to yr updates ! Am a huge fan of the japanese minimal and scandi feel. I think the wonderful thing abt a tight budget is that we need to be more resourceful and creative in material usage and purchased furnishings. We were on a pretty tight budget too. Thankfully we managed to keep our 23 yr old floor tiles for the living room and bedrooms. we also manage to keep a good portion of the old oblong white tiles in the kitchen. We've slowly furnished our home throughout the last year with vintage pieces from careful sourcing and a number of vintage pieces were refurbished and restored on our own. This saved some costs and also ensured every piece had a cool story behind them. Am a vintage lover who has a mini obesession for restoration so it helped fuel my restoration itch. I hope you'll have a pleasant renovation journey and last but not least, congrats on the purchase of yr new home!!!!!!! -
ahhhhh i think we've similar ideas for towel holders http://www.renotalk.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=40931&st=80

Hi Adi. you know what?! I try... I try with my mind to unpack but the **** heart is weak...Unpacking definately takes time and mood ;p We've only just finish restoring the study room's table after 3 weeks of purchasing it ;p I've still got the little vintage typing table to go so our study room is still UNDONE @@ wahahahahahaha.... As for the idiots who copied yr place... well... lets say they can copy yr design, but they CAN"T copy a person's style... i can picture them with a home like yrs but it being furnished with furniture of bad taste. Do chk bk on their hse and let us know how it's furnished k? *EVIL LAUGHTER!

Hi tim! I've recently just restored a lightly rusted office table for our study. What I did was: 1. give the item a dammmmmm good wipe with Cif - i don't rub to hard... (clears of years of grime) 2. clean the product with a clean cloth to get rid of all detergent 3. if there're severe rusting, sand paper the rust off to a even surface 4. used autosol to remove rust from lightly rusted areas 5. apply rust retardant to rusted areas - rust retardant will retard rusting and some rust retardant will like an organic layer over the rust which is great for items requiring a paint job (pls take not that the organic layer formed is in a dark shade thus do not use rust retardant on items which u'd like to keep it's original colour) 6. after the rust retardant is dried (approx 0.5hr), I use plox spray paint to spray over the item. (do mask the area you;d like the paint from covering eg glass etc ... with good ole masking tape ) 7. after letting yr item to dry.... you can now enjoy it ! ps. shake spray paint cans well... pre-test to get rid of splatters etc before spraying yr item, do light layers at a time allowing the layers to dry in between

Hi jump st, I've been refurbishing a couple of vintage furniture including a vintage metal office table and found that autosol is a god-given wonderful product to use on rusted steel... it's also suppose to help retard rust reformation and managed to clear off lightly rusted areas ... works great on polishing aluminum, too... (with out the scratch marks )

Actually, our tiles are hormogenous and the last owner... well... he did not take care of the place but he hardly stayed in the flat. Our flat had belonged to 2 brothers who did not do much to it. ;p I actually did scrub the grout by hand.... I used baking soda and some soap and OMG!!!! to see years of dirt coming out of the floor was an eye opener @@ lol!!!!! Sadistically theraputic! Gotta pre-warn you that I took 3/4 day per room during each crazy scrub.

Welcome to renotalk and congrats on yr new home. We worked on a tight budget... kept the original 23 year old floor tiles for the living, master bedrooms & 2 common rooms. ( they were in lovely condition thus we could not bear to hack them too) That probably kept us within our budget. Besides the above, we managed to keep half of the kitchen's original subway style tiles which we love ( we got away with that since we we going for vintage rather than modern... then told our ID the budget and to work within that. Thankfully he was quite accommodating .... sometimes... being on a budget forces us to be a tad more innovative and to look into alternative usage of material. We'll definitely! look forward to images of yr new home happy renovating!!!

Hi Adi!!! am looking forward to MORE! pixs of yr place! it's looking great! and ps. congrats on yr rom! For us hor... we were on a tight budget thus decided to do up our home in phases... (our other 2 rooms are empty...) We did take a short break from furnishing our home (we're still shuffling things ard the areas we did up) Now that we're more settled in ... and have a little cash to spare (damm bills!) We're now working on our work studio (more mine than his ;p). My work table was figured out a while bk, it's a refurbished singer machine stand with a solid wood top (just finished that last week...pixs soon) However had been looking for his table for a while as he wanted it to be a little more unique. Thank goodness we finally found it. for chairs, I'd like a wooden stool or the old school roller stool-like chair for him, he's eyeing a scandi-style wooden chair. The chairs will be our next challenge. I can't wait for my next invoice payment!! damm freelancing!

Angelbutterfly, frankly, I feel that if you really are leaning towards something else for yr toilet, eg. to change the tiles, you should follow your heart... because you're gonna face that toilet for the next 5 years or so. Thus even if the workmanship is good... but if it bugs you for certain reasons, I think you should change it according to how you feel. M pretty sure yr ID/contractor will understand. mabaricows , Thank you for remembering our lurve for vintage items and taking the effort to sending us that link. really appreciate it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi everyone, today was a real treat for us because we finally found my husband's studio table! (he's pretty particular about what he wants and I've been under-going 2 months of grieve searching for his table!!!!!) We actually saw this table 3 mths bk but we were so financially tied the last few mths that it was at the bk of our shopping list. When we visited the shop again today, we not only saw it still there, but this time, it had a little typewriter table compainion! I could not resist bringing the little typewriter table home too to place our printer on. So, the next few days will be loads of elbow grease refurbishing for these 2 items! Am real excited abt puting these 2 pieces and my recently refurbished sewing table together in the studio Here are the pixs of our purchases today.... they were originally a darker bluish gray and after years of aging, they're now a light turquoise gray, just the perfect vintage shade to me
