  1. maybe you can figure this out.... double insulation... insulation is made out of type of pvc rubber.... through time this will break into million of pieces... but then again, you would need to check the insulation yourself... it;s partially true to what the electricial said... but if you just need to change what he suggests, maybe you should just buy off ccm and install yourslef. its as simple as copy and paste Folks, An electrician suggested that I need not change the wirings of my parents' 30 year old HDB flat cos they have double insulation & are very lasting. Thus, he recommends that we change only the power points & switches. Would like to seek your insights on this. Many thanks in advance!
  2. the legal way: to wrap plaster boards within any hdb needs hdb's appoval... carpentry and false ceiling not an issue.... Look for Reiki's T-blog. Google search is easier than the search function here. Plaster boards, carpentry and false ceilings for the legal way.
  3. wah... this one is very messy and extremely dusty... tools needed.... hacker / tile cutting something that looks like a small circular saw / stopping / W1 / pvc conduit and accessories MOST IMPORTANT: A **** GOOD VACUMN CLEANER I did it for my own house... but because i renovated myself... not that I am in renovation but i do networking cabling and basic electrical installation. My house took me 6 months to complete... all consealed wiring... i dun care because i will not be selling my house anytime soon.... What is it that you need? If you are a DIYer, then you would know the above are the basic tools and items needed. so please weigh if it's really worth it.... for sure your other half will HATE it... Can someone please help to point to a project done by one forumer who had achieved to concealed his wiring & sockets in a old generation hdb flat? have been using search functions and all but no avail. thanks inadvance.
  4. from my experience.... any electrician can do it... it's the price thats gonna differ... meaning minor works prices are alot higher than the renovation works... basically these minor works are diy projects... some electrician do patching ... some dont ... Hi there my house was renovated 2 years ago I was wondering if there is any recommdation for elecrician keen to do minor electrical works? I would like to do the following - add additional downlight in false ceiling (means have to 'cut' hole in the false ceiling) - remove old lighting and add in downlight - run wiring due to the installation of new downlight in the flase ceiling Just out of curiosity, will the electrician be responsible to patch up the false celing? Or i have to engage plasterer to patch up the openings once they are done with wiring job? Thanks a lot
  5. Legrand is exceptional in their design... depending on the model you need... pricing varies... my knowledge is price is for individual parts. eg: cover around $16-$22... the switches would be another price and the metal thingy that holds the switches another price.... unless you are talking about the ugly looking milac models.... those should come in a set... cheap... go ccm to check out the price pn milac switches... those that I have mentioned earlier are sold in kelantan lane... Hi all, Does anyone knows how much is a legrand or MK switch cover plate? I got a quote from electrician to change the cover for me at $20 per switch... Is it very expensive? Imagine i change all the switch covers... Gonna cost a bomb. I am renovating my 5rm resale unit. Thanks in advance... Optional: change of lighting switch face plate $20 each Regards, 488a
  6. dlink DIR-655 extreme n gigabit router Ben, Do you have a specific model for the dlink router?
  7. i only use lan points at home... it's super reliable.... Hi DesT, I'm a newbie to networking. But is there any advantage to running LAN points at home? Thanks for sharing.
  8. why dun you buy the materials and ask him to install? DB box ex... lighting pt... okok nia scv standard tel pt very ex normally around $40.. per point aircon and heater okok... normally around $150... Hi, I got a quote from my contractors for my electrical works. Is it reasonable? Appreciate your inputs. Thanks in advance. 01 x DB Box @ $450 35 x Lighting points, include install lights @ $45 each 07 x Double sockets @ S65 each 09 x single sockets @ $60each 02 x SCV points @ S150each 02 x Telephone points @100 each 01 x Air-con points @ $180 01 x Heater point @ $180
  9. CCM's cheaper than CH Just curious for those bros or sis that had purchase the light switches from them.... may i know which place the price is cheaper? Anyone got make any comparison btw them. Does both shop also selling the same brand/model of the switches? Pls advise. Thks
  10. i use storage... wife like hot hot water... instant too weak for her..... gas never used it before because think of the gas pipes already want to faint.... Hi all, Can anyone help to enlighten me on the pros and cons for the different types of water heater? 1) Gas heater 2) Instant electric heater 3) Storage heater
  11. yes... please remember to liase with singtel... tell them you are using your own router...not their's... make sure you take down the name/date/time whom you spoke to at singtel about this. the ont is programmed to work only with their own router (or at least that happened to me from M1) so tell them clearly that you will be using your own router... Ben, Thanks alot for the detailed info. Now I know that I should buy a T base router and just plug my cat5e cables.. Bingo.
  12. ok... lets start afresh.... ONT - a device to convert FO into RJ45 Basic configuration: 1. FO cable to ONT 2. ONT to 1000base-T router 3. 1000 base-t router to 1000 base-t network switch 4. 1000 base-t switch to cat5e cable You should buy a 1000 base-t router and a 8 port 1000 base-t switch If you need to do things in a simpler method... Just buy a 1000 base-t router then plug in your cat5e into anyone of the 4 ports behind.... Ben, Do you mean I should buy a additional switchbox and connect it to the supplied router or buy a new router ? I know nothing about fibre installation and what is a ONT?
  13. no difference.... which ever is cheaper... go for it.... Hi All, I'm intending to have a concealed piping but am not sure which material is best suited for the task. Most contractors would recommend copper due to it's ability to bend but a few other contractors says stainless steel can be bend as well. My main concern would be the reliability of the pipe as it's concealed and I don't want to have to pull it out some time in the future. Any recommendations on which I should use? Thanks!
  14. Let's do this step by step Hi there, Been looking through renotalk for quite sometime and hope someone can help me out on this. What's does looping mean? Is it 2 lights will on within 1 switch? Yes Also understand that there's a few thickness wire for the electrical. which wire is for which one? 1. 1.5mm - Lighting - Correct 2. 2-2.5mm - power socket - Correct 3. 5mm - air-con - Correct Also for connecting a new switch for a lighting point meaning i need 2 1.5mm to connect them from the main power point then link to the lighting then link to a switch. Am i right to say that? Main live to switch /fixture light to switch / neutral direct into fixture / earth onto any metal part of the fixture Also how can one conceal the main point after shifting from the main point to the second point? (sealed and patch up the holes? But there will be trucking right from the main source since it's start from there?)to conceal is easy - tear down the useless casings and putty with stopping... just go to any hardware stall and ask for stopping.... I know this is very 'on hands' topic..but just want to know more how electrical really works. Appreciate anyone able to enlighten me on this?
  15. never done it for my 1st and 2nd house.... basically it's hdb... what can go wrong? Hi All, like to check does anyone here do electrical testing and how much does the it cost? My ID is charging me $600 and he said this is the market rate. I think i kena chop carrot so i want to make sure. Thanks.
  16. The suppied router sucks big time...lol seriously... it's a 10/100 base-t router... basically going back to the same old speed although you've got good backbone cable.. you should invest in a dlink 1000 base-t switch.. plug it into your ont then your cat 5e will go into your switch.... Thanks Ben...I thought they will also supply the wireless router when I sign up. Do u mean it's no good? My house had already wired up 2 LAN points with faceplate on cat5E...one is for mio box and the other in my room. I hope I can use back these ports as its a hassle to rewired again. I would not prefer wireless in my room as there are walls blocking my router position.
  17. door closer and additional lock set will do the trick... basically you'll leave the lock from HDB and use the new lock set instead... The fire-rated door replacement as part of the Lift Upgrading Programme is going on round my ward. I realised the new doors can be opened from the outside if they aren't locked from the inside. Very different from the old doors which requires a key to be opened from the outside. Other than changing the lock, do I have other options? Are there ways to automatically 'lock' the door when it is closed so that people fro outside cannot open it?
  18. easiest place is homefix...
  19. ummm this is not readily available.... if you dun need much I can give them to you... but you'd need to collect your self... Anyone knows where to buy those electric cable with transparent casing (like those used for pendant lamps)?
  20. how ever you polish it will not work or at least look perfect ... you can change a new piece from Dama... Trust me .... it's cheaper than buying polish and all.... is there any method of repairing a deep scratch on acrylic? any fillers etc we can use to make it look perfect again?
  21. you will not get any cheap ones in the market... standard pricing is around thousand plus for the yale... samsung ranges from 400 - 1000 ++ unless you wanna purchase directly from SLS those PRC made finger print em lock... Hi, i need to change my main door lock. Looking for One touch Fingerprint Verification Method. Brand Yale or Sumsumg, any lobang? Thanks
  22. Yes, the cat 5e cables are reusable... also what do you mean by wired up? cabling / faceplate /jacks? an easier scenario would be is it something like a office? If yes... it'll work... but if i am not wrong the ONT from singtel has 4 ports of rj45 like any other router... but the thing is that only 1 port works.... so you may have to invest on switches... do not get their inhouse routers for wireless because it's 10/100 base-T where as FO works up to 1000 base-T I am going to sign up Singtel's fibre broadband soon. My house is currently wired up using cat5e cable, can this still be use after the fibre has been installed? Don't really like wireless as I need stable signals for stuff like my streamer box for watching movies. Please advise.
  23. ehhh what kind of aircon? size? as long as the cover can open wide enough to take out the filters and put in a vacumn... i made mine to exactly to what I wanted... at first my aircon guys die die say cannot but after fixing they also agreed that it looks good....
  24. yes it's possible.... depending on the depth of your ceiling... example: if i have a 2inch false ceiling so i am to get any DL fitting that's below 2 inch in depth.... hope i make sense....
