  1. Hey a bit late for you, but JotterGoods & Star Furniture got some nice and simple designs: http://emrenoblog.wordpress.com/2012/10/20/jottergoods-at-star-furniture/
  2. Why don't you show clear pics of the current flooring? Obviously hard to advise without seeing the floor in real life. Harder without any pics. We can only advise based on our experience with old parquet but contractors or professional flooring company will know better. Without knowing the current condition: - not advisable to lay laminate on rotting or uneven parquet. Have you seen pics of mold growing under laminated flooring? Super gross. Imagine staying in a house full of mold spores... - hacking will be dusty and dirty. Why must you stay in the house? The dust and fumes (if you revarnish) is no joke. Why not move to a serviced apartment for a few days? - you can try repairing the bad parquet by replacing bad planks, sanding down and then revarnishing. After that the floor will be ok (did that for my place). But it depends on the current condition. From pure economics, retaining parquet is better. Laminated or homogenous flooring don't add much to valuation. Plus parquet floor feels better.
  3. Definitely allowed. I know someone who submitted plans to HDB n approved. Lots of people have done it. Contractor lazy lar. More work so not all contractors want to do it.
  4. Get one of those FSM with the 'third eye' to have a look at your place. If need be, get someone to do prayers to cleanse the place. Good for peace of mind whether you believe in such things or not. Reno has started so I m doubtful you can back out now. Get the FSM over asap in case need to rectify the design to counter negative chi. Even tho my place don't have such history, I also got a FSM to see cos it is a resale. Again, whether I truly believe in fengshui or not, it was good for peace of mind. At minimum, I will advise no dark colors or corners... Even if there is nothing detected, not good to have a dark house given your knowledge of the incident. You know what I mean right? Some houses are just dark and dingy as part of the intended design. Super creepy during 7th month IMO.
  5. Compiled a list based on EMs for sale or rent: http://emrenoblog.wordpress.com/2012/03/09/pasir-ris-hdb-maisonettes-with-sky-terraces/ Am guessing large ones are the Spottiswoode Park penthouses. Those point blocks behind the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station. Dunno where the small ones are... 5 room model A perhaps?
  6. Is nice but more expensive than usual one pc wc. Hey c stradale, sorry to hear about the walls. Can't the contractor try to vary the length of the false ceiling drop down so that the false ceiling looks even?
  7. If you are open to socks... why not try the dipped chairs idea that Minchul suggested? I'm generally not into the look, but I've seen some that are quite well executed. Examples: Just legs: Just tops: Almost to the top:
  8. We didn't really communicate with our IDs on furniture choices except for measurements... like I said, I prefer my selections and they have different taste than ours. But we did make multiple visits to stores cos it was really a learning experience. Don't buy from the 1st store you go to cos there are probably nicer/cheaper stuff out there (unless you happen to be very lucky and go to the right store immediately). He is also happy to have a nice home... so not solely for my benefit. Well... we really don't know enough about your family to advise on space planning. It's always very personal ya? Need details like age of kids, boy/girl, how much space you need for wardrobe, etc. Anyway put all the details on one page for easy reference in case someone wants to try. What does your ID think? Erm, I wouldn't do it. Plus the colour (of the chair) doesn't change enough. Might end up being a country looking chair + dining table with socks... But if you like it, then go ahead lar, it's your place so do what you please. It could end up looking nice no matter what others think. Like the lamp in my dining room and the kitchen counter chairs - my IDs hated the idea but we loved them and it turned out nice in the end. Sometimes just have to trust yourself.
  9. Hi Redmoon, then shop yourself lor. I'm happier to shop alone sometimes. Hubby is ok with furniture (mainly cos plenty of seats I think) but not for clothes. Anyway with smartphones they can always surf the net while waiting... Hey Luna, what are your plans for the 4 rooms? But yeah I would not hack away the toilet... Would be important for future resale if this unit is not 'the one' (aka home to stay in till you meet the maker). I saw too many creatively configured HDB units when I was looking. So customized to the owners lifestyle that others will find it hard to use no matter how nicely renovated it is.
  10. Omg I love your newspaper holder. Mind sharing where you got them from?
  11. Comfort and practicality is also very important to us which is why we 'butt-tested' literally hundreds of chairs and stools before getting ours which we felt were a good mix of comfort and design. Hmm... even my ID told me that I am very lucky. Hubby is very sweet, he knows I feel happy shopping. He told me my eyes will like brighten up when I step into a store that I like and then I'll totally lose track of time while checking out the furniture. So even tho we no longer need to buy furniture, he'll still bring me to places like TBL cos he knows that I really wanna go. Sometimes when I'm upset he'll even bring me to the Air store cos he knows I like to window shop there. I dunno leh, I always thought ladies should have the prerogative to furnish the house... Our domain mah. Men just need to pay. It's like... you don't expect the President of the United States to renovate the White House right? The First Lady will do it. But since you already got the sofa, just make the best of it ya? Put up pictures and other decorations to distract the eye and it should help... best is if you can arm twist your hubby into giving in and changing the model... like withhold *** for a month or something. LOL very evil me.
  12. Aiyo, poor thing. I am so lucky that my hubby gives in to my choices. And drives me everywhere to shop. He's even become a bit of a furniture store expert after the gruelling experience. Surely the fact that your ID and you (and your dad) hate the furniture tells your hubby that his taste is... erm, not the best? Yes Lum May Yee's sofa is from Air. She has quite a few stuff from Grafunkt too. You can browse the Air & Grafunkt designs online... but if you bring your hubby to Air I am sure he can tell the difference in quality... free parking in front of the Mt Sophie flagship btw. Just go and have a look.
  13. Well there are the loft units in Dawson too. Anyway, whatever. Apple to oranges comparison. Usual divert attention sort of answer. Already staying in one so doesn't really affect us. Plus I can imagine new EM layouts will be more cramped anyway cos of aircon ledges and nonsense corridor space.
  14. I like your floorplan. Even discussed it with my colleague before cos it has 2 rooms with toilets. When is the planned move in date?
  15. Congrats! Where and what config is your new place?
  16. No SERS I guess... http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1231653/1/.html No plans for more HDB executive maisonettes: Khaw SINGAPORE: Minister for National Development Khaw Boon Wan said there is no need for the Housing and Development Board (HDB) to build executive maisonettes (EMs) again, as executive condominiums (ECs) already include double-storey units similar to EMs. Mr Khaw made this point in a written parliamentary response to a question from Member of Parliament for Pasir Ris-Punggol Group Representation Constituency, Gan Thiam Poh. HDB stopped building EMs in 1995, when the EC Housing Scheme was rolled out. EMs range from 138 to 243 square metres in size while ECs range from 69 to 324 square metres. Mr Khaw noted that ECs typically come with more ***** features than EMs. He said the EC is better placed to meet the diverse needs of Singaporeans, removing the need to re-introduce EMs. - CNA/xq
  17. It's all down to personal preferences... I just like furniture designs from other stores better. Have a look at Air, Grafunkt, Mountain Teak, Pomelo, Commune & Journey East. If you don't mind rehabbed furniture, Like That One, Forar and Mad About Vintage. Or even the copycat ones like A Thousand Tales, Lorgans & Lush. Not sure if spray painting or painting is better... you may wanna do some research into paint stroke marks etc. May be easier to get your ID to do for you cos you may need to sand down the lacquer and stuff before painting so that it lasts and looks good. I only did a mirror frame and thought it's not that easy... or I just don't have crafty hands lor.
  18. Hey, or white table legs like the pic you found, plus turquoise chairs? If you look for turquoise inspiration pics, can find lots. Or turquoise table legs, white chairs. Lotsa cheery possibilities. Don't fret. You have a nice new apartment, should be happy ya? Hey can you share your floor plan?
  19. Glad you are considering to paint the table legs. The same Mrs B table in painted and unpainted version. Very different vibe hor? The painted one just has that extra spunk that I like. Think will go nicely with your pendant lamp too. Yay, so exciting. Hope you go ahead with the painting and rem to post pics k? As for Scanteak... nevermind lar, next time lor. Actually Air Division pricing is not so painful when discounted (and prices are good when they go on sale). Plus the wood finishing is really nice, like a class above the rest. Even Nathan Yong's new store Grafunkt can't match the finishing. Mountain Teak finishing is still too rough for me. I consider pricing to be ok cos I think their stuff are quite timeless - think will bring them over wherever I move lor. So value over time is still better than the cheaper alternatives.
  20. How about painting your table too? I personally like this cheery yellow shade like the Mrs B table I saw at Pomelo matched with white chairs. So yellow table legs, white chairs? See if your ID like the ID too? Ah yes, if you read my blog you'll know about my liking for Air furniture too. I like stuff from Pomelo as well. Sorta quirky. That's my 2 cents for 'rescuing the look' from the strong country vibe. White is safe and neutral, so if you are afraid you'll hate the new chair color, I think white could be a good alternative. I like splashes of colour and with your dining room not having windows, I think bright cheery yellow will be nice. Matches the brick wall too.
