Hi Potatoes, the stools seem to block the kitchen entrance. Or is it a perspective thing? Perhaps you can enlarge the kitchen entrance by hacking away a bit of the wall?
-
Oh... can imagine. I would be very disappointed if a reno with reconfigured layout like mine appears in a mag now... For BR3, we'll still be able to close it off as a room if we want to, so it won't be too bad I think. We also did consider the effect on future selling price etc but we figured that we should makeover the house so we are happy staying there... Ha, yeah, I would love to have a shophouse next time... thoroughly hacked and reconfigured to modern needs. A girl can dream right?

Nice! Can you pls show us more pics? (M a greedy gal!) Say comparison of the daylight with curtains drawn/open. Actually I'll be quite happy to see more of other spots too. I like the openess and idea of bringing natural light to the stairway. That is what I'm trying to achieve by hacking away my BR3 wall too. Unfortunately (fortunately) my place doesn't get much light/sun anyway cos it's N-S facing, but anyway we (+ IDs) also like the idea of introducing cross-ventilation to improve air flow so that the house is naturally cooling. Your MBR pic immediately reminded me of my favourite maisonette reno, 'Minimalist Loft' aka "Loft of Love' featured in March 2010 edition of Home & Decor (and featured on City Beats, etc) I don't want to hijack your thread so I'll post more info about the 'Loft of Love' in my T-Blog instead. LINKY here to read more about 'Loft of Love'

I've been meaning to show my main design 'inspiration' for my place. But after ymjp100 shared pics of his glassed MBR (finally, yay!) in his T-Blog, I'm reminded enough of the 'Loft of Love' to share this find with the rest of you reading this - perhaps you will find the pics inspiring too? My SO actually came around to the idea of getting a HDB after I show him the March 2010 issue of Home & Decor where 'Loft of Love' was featured. We love the design so much, we even show the pics to all the IDs n contractors we approached. Ok, some featured pics (just 5 to whet your appetite)... (Typical Gen 3 layout) View from doorway: View from living room: Kitchen & Dining: Glassed MBR (he used BR3/BR2 instead - whacked away the connecting wall and created a joined bed/study room: Layout: And then some links for you to see more pics yourself - e.g. check out his huge bathroom... he connected the upstairs toilets: LINKY to RT T-Blog LINKY to Home & Decor LINKY to his Blogspot (that has got more pics)

MBR pics would be great. Looking forward to them. Mmm... hope it'll be nice and that the renovation process is painless (like MayDream's). Nicer or not is arguable. I suspect many will find my place a little plain n colourless. But it's our place/home so whatever makes us happy right? ___________ For those who are looking for beds, beddings and bedlinen, you may like to pop by the King Koil sale: Mabbe at night is better. Was there in the morning and it's already really hot! LINKY for phone browsers to pan n zoom (click on full version at the bottom)

The Kartell outlet (by Space) at Centrepoint has closed for some time. If you want to get Kartell, go down to LifeStorey (@Great World City) this weekend before they close for renovations - think 30% off. Not sure how much Space (@bencoolen street) will quote. I went thru this stage as well... I had a thing for nice wooden chairs that costs a bomb... and I also know that replicas are easily available at a fraction of the originals' price. But after talking to some friends, I decided to bite the bullet and stick to getting originals (and not replicas). So you won't see any nice wooden chairs at my place. My friend's advice is that the fake chairs don't last (e.g. fake Ghost chairs crack easily), look fake (can tell from the finishing e.g the studs on the butterfly stool and the plastic sheen) and infringe on intellectual property (my IDs' pet peeve, since they are in the creative industry too). Plus I think since I won't carry fake designer bags, then I shouldn't use fake furniture. Good luck with your furniture search! Many more months to sniff out good bargains, so don't fret. I can see where Rayflox is coming from. I've a bit of trouble imagining how it'll go together... a bit of a disconnect, plus the wall paint too... But end of the day it's your place so just do what makes you happy ya?

Congrats on getting your keys! Looking forward to see the transformation.

Some updates. Wasn't really planning to update cos felt quite tired, but SO said he was looking forward to reading my blog after work today... LINKY to my WP blog for iPhone users (rem to click on 'full version' to pan n zoom).

Thanks ymjp100! You have a really nice place! Rem that you never did show us your glassed MBR right? Any plans to update your T-Blog?
-
Thanks, but really the 1st thing that came to my mind when I saw the ad was Kobe bro just I just had to share it... always thought the curved doors are unique to Kobe bro so was quite excited to share my 'find' when I saw it. Mabbe both apartments had the same ID/contractor?? Wonder what the new buyer would do with the doors? No one recruit me leh. I didn't even know have a name (LAKAD) and club. Erm, so where do I sign up?

Mmm... I like the long entrance... the drama queen in me loves a dramatic entrance passage way with cool lighting... can't quite find what I'm visualising but something like: Like the kind you find in hip hotels... What were you planning to do with the entrance/passageway?
-
Oh my! Love your kitchen, and little details like how your pot matches the buch stools. Can we have more pics pls?
-
Ya boy, this is a fun thread, can chat about all sorts of things. Kobe bro is cool. Friends78, me too! Some more is the scream like super drama kind, especially if I'm startled by a flying insect (praying mantis are really big n scary...). Smaller ones I can usually control a bit, wave frantically at the insect and run for my life into another room and close the door. Or else if I'm alone I will empty half a can of insecticide until I'm convince the insect is dead (esp for cockroaches). Haha, so we both cannot go to the jungle. Sure die one.

Erm, aren't those decided before the reno starts? Ok, will be staying tuned to your updates. Do you plan to shift in end-July tho? Cos is during ghost month right?

If there is space/budget, would you consider boxing up the pipes? I know some people don't like to... but seems to be the only way plus I think the exposed pipes are in a really awkward location. I read from a book that facing window is bad FS too. Perhaps bed against the right-most wall? I prefer the wardrobe layout in the 1st pic and if you place the bed against the right wall, can also consider to have more wardrobe/cabinet for storage along that wall cos I noticed that you don't have a store room? As for the dining area, I would either: 1. Switch BR3 with dining as you have shown, or 2. Keep dining in that area, and build a breakfast/counter all across where the entrance of the kitchen is until the support wall. For support wall build a feature there either mirror or cabinet (again, since you don't have a storeroom...). And then knock away the wall between the kitchen n dining for a big open space/entrance to kitchen via dining room... hmm... not sure if such a layout would make sense but since I've already typed so much just give my cheap 2 cents lar. Good luck with your reno!

Thanks Lady R. The most 'exciting' part just got started lar. Not late at all and you can always congratulate me when I finally move in. Ya... the railings just cannot lar... really too bad about the steps... Oh, haha I lazy mah. Anyway 1st week like no fun... think 2nd week onwards can go more frequently bah?
-
Looks like ur reno is progressing well. When is the expected handover date?
-
Erm "visitor" is the scary kind right? Gosh Lady R, you sound so 'cool' abt the pontianak. If it's me, super freaked out man... Good to hear all is ok now. Mae-jie, is there a correct protocol when we see such big moth? I'm very scared of insects leh (typical reaction is to scream like I've seen a monster...). Even small small beetle I also will scream so my SO will usually help to catch and throw outside the window. If got big moth how? Can chase away?
-
Thanks! The design is actually very simple bordering on plain... as you may be able tell from the plain tiles we got. No patterns and hardly any colour. But yes m very very excited. Erm... cos they hack the WC too? Thanks Mae-jie! Think u will be having fun in China soon rite? Hopefully by the time u r back i've got good progress in my reno. I went back n found your sink post already (look for it until I blur in your t-blog). But we think we'll stick to metal sink cos we like to pour rubbish n liquid that may stain into the sink. Thanks so much for going back to look for it!

The black ones r for the loos, grey for balcony n white thru'out the study, dining, kitchen n living. IDs mentioned something about sense of space n all that... n black for contrast. Think we were quite easy going about the tiles selection and just went along with most of their suggestions. No lar, never go down. Thought to do so tmr but IDs said Thur afternoon is better. More stuff will be hacked. Think my place got more stuff to hack than usual considering the 4 walls, marble floor n multiple layers of toilet tiles. Luckily the study room wall was already hacked by previous owner. Wonder if it'll be smelly after hacking?
-
Thanks Footprint. Not much to update in the 1st few days. I've asked my ID when is the best time to go down n take photos (felt a bit 'bimbotic' when I asked, dunno why) of the hacked and cleaned-up stage. My ID arranged the tiles for me when I told him I'm taking the pics for blogging. Found it so cute that he added a little block of white solid surface for the toilet tiles.
