  1. Are you trolling? You didn't even read the whole thread right? This place is self-designed, which I think is really impressive for a DIY effort. Magazine shots will usually be styled - so all the daily living items will be packed or moved away for the shot, your idea of 'beautification'?.

  3. Thanks. Dunno why but the handles really caught my eye... Are they a fav of your friend? Cos I'm worried about banging into handles, so I prefer not to have any. Better not put your kids at the deck for detention lar. Not safe.
  4. Your blog is popular mah... Any other hosting site that you can use?
  5. Thanks. Is it Skyterrace or Skyville? Didn't know the new flats are already up. Congrats! I love staying in Queenstown. Welcome to the neighborhood.
  6. Congrats on your new place! Which part of Queenstown? Do install aircon in the living room. You'll appreciate the AC during hot months like this time of the year.
  7. Ok... don't forget that clutter from daily living will make your house look messy and far from the 'show flat' look. So I'm no fan of exposed drying racks unless your tableware is gorgeous, and always gorgeously stacked. But a dish rack above the sink is difficult to use unless you lower the dish rack height, or is tall. P.S. Anyway who does the dishes/cooks? Whoever cooks more should have more say. Saves grief down the road.
  8. Are you using the bottom one as a dish rack? If so, a flip up may hit heads and block lights.
  9. I heard a common practice for the 'free' 3Ds is to use the paid 3Ds from another customer. This is more prevalent for HDBs where the BTOs are in fairly standard layouts. Get enough customers, and you'll have a library of 3Ds to pick from. I've also read about reno designs that are completely recycled. Of course, the poor unwitting customers will not find out unless they have common friends (or one is a blogger). So yes, I believe Shawncck when he says that there are free 3Ds provided. But knowing the time and costs involved in producing 3Ds, I'll question why and how those IDs can produce those 3Ds for free. If you are a business person, does it make sense to provide free 3Ds not knowing if you'll clinch the deal? For a chance at a hundreds of thousand/multi-million contract, perhaps. Otherwise, just doesn't make sense. I don't believe getting a "free lunch" is that simple.
  10. Ya flip up. We hardly use the top shelves btw. Requires stool to reach so we keep seldom used items on top.
  11. Hmm. Best u check with them. Actually I don't even know the name of the hinge I'm using for the dishrack. They did the sourcing, or perhaps my contractor did?
  12. Hope your reno goes smoothly! Yeah, I've heard of unexpected re-roofing works that really brings the costs up. But on the bright side, you can then install good insulation material/technology that keeps your house cool? Guess if you are planning to stay long-term, then best to overhaul rather than live with rectification works down the road... You mean applications to URA/BCA is expensive? Didn't know that. I've not really focused on inter-terraces makeovers, but here's one that I really like: http://emrenoblog.wordpress.com/2012/04/15/inspirations-the-cambridge-road-inter-terrace/ The place belongs to the well known food blogger Chubby Hubby btw. Think his reno/re-build? must have cost a bomb...
  13. Hey, ask her to upload her portfolio to Qeeple so we can beow leh. Btw I think carpets will enhance the look? Cos the current tile flooring doesn't really fit the baroque theme. Typically wood or carpets suit the theme more IMO. E.g. http://www.homeanddecor.com.sg/homes/foreign-affair http://www.homeanddecor.com.sg/homes/classical-stage http://www.homeanddecor.com.sg/homes/hotel-glamour Don't forget to jazz up your place with fresh flowers - really helps to complete the look.
  14. M & A are familiar with this problem - did you mention that you wanted this system? I told them I wanted this last time, and they advised that if we want to retain upper cabinets to the ceiling, we cannot use this hinge (or we can leave a space from ceiling to upper cabinet that I didn't want, waste space, etc)... . So eventually we settled for the hinge that I am currently using. Blum is a little pricey. You can also explore if Hafele is a more economical alternative especially if you plan to have many units in the kitchen. From what I've read, Hafele quality is fine. Blum is more 'branded' of course. http://www.hafele.com/us/products/lift-systems-for-wall-cabinets.asp Hafele has a showroom that you can visit to see the systems IRL. Somewhere ulu I think. Or play with the ones at Interior Affairs.
  15. She is a 'dajie' here leh. You read her t-blog before? This is her update T-blog: http://www.renotalk.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=41620 Yah, think her style suits colorful baroque style, and nice to see what she has been working on. Do send our regards to her. Think originally drawn chandeliers in the toilets would have suited the baroque theme better? Was there a reason why 'birdcages' were finally used instead?
  16. Hey, congrats on your new place! Seldom get landed T-blogs here. If you are willing to consider S/S kitchen, have a look at Dwell Kitchens mag (free!) here: Free! Dwell Presents 100 Kitchens We Love It seems pretty common in the USA, and many of the featured kitchens look good. Just curious what is the ballpark figure for a (i) reno, (ii) A&A & (iii) re-building for a landed place like yours? Cos the floor plan/size looks to be a bit bigger than HDB EMs, but I'm guessing with additional stuff like roofing/porch, drainage, termite treatment etc the costs will add up to quite a bit more? How big is the build-up btw?
  17. If my current area has MG/adjoined/jumbo flats, I would have bought one with the view to stay for good and not move and renovate multiple times. Just love the space offered by the bigger HDBs. Or even just to renovate and then rent the studio out for extra passive income also not a bad idea for the MG unit...
  18. You can consider adjoined, multi gen or jumbo hdb next time. Can have 5 bedrooms. Examples: http://www.renotalk.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=43662&view=findpost&p=669274 http://www.renotalk.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=43662&view=findpost&p=669259 http://www.renotalk.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=43662&view=findpost&p=666402 http://www.renotalk.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=43662&view=findpost&p=666456 http://www.renotalk.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=43662&view=findpost&p=667060 Bedok area got quite a lot of jumbo I think.
  19. Can't rem the exact price. Think was going for around $2.8-$2.9K a year ago? Was that 50%? Thought was a really good deal for solid walnut. Even my contractor thought so.
  20. My 2 cents: - Custom-made for wardrobes and cabinets where you need to maximize the available space e.g. kitchen and shoe racks. - Off the shelf for normal stuff like tables, unless you have a special design in mind like a booth type of dining space. Even for TV console, perhaps off-the rack if you don't intend to have feature wall. From chats with my contractor for my TV console and on some of the solid wood furniture that I got, I think off the rack can offer better quality stuff that can last and be moved to your next place. E.g. I bought a number of solid wood pieces on sale, and my contractor said he wouldn't have been able to construct a similar item at a cheaper cost or with better finishing. He also shared that me that furniture factories have special machines that can give much better finishing than normal contractor/carpenters. If you have seen the plywood typically used for custom-made furniture, you'll understand. Of course compared to IKEA and any of those stores that use 'sawdust' or MDF for material, then I think custom made will be better quality. For my TV console, although I am satisfied with the design/quality, but getting one from Grafunkt (during 50% sale tho!) would have been at nearly the same cost as what I spent on customizing, with the difference being that I can move the Grafunkt console with me when I sell the house next time. RT-ers have gone either routes from what I see. Really depends on what you want.
  21. After so many months, we are both quite sick of the empty walls. Agree is so much easier when the couple has similar taste or with one having strong opinions & the other none (as with some friends I know). In my case, we both have fairly strong opinions and differing views on art. So for the 'common' areas like living, dining rooms and kitchen, the pieces have to be something we both like/don't object to. In the bedrooms, we are easier on each other. For the 2nd bedroom, I caved and got something simple from IKEA while waiting for 'the one' to appear. Again, waiting to measure etc. Inertia a bit high, so putting up may take a while. Think no need to draw out the suspense for this... In the study, I may get some amusing ones like prints by Jason Freeny (http://web.mac.com/moistproduction/Shop_Files/Shop_Prints.html). Still thinking tho. I did ask my hubby to paint something - he was good at art during his student days, but he declined... I also thought about putting up other things in lieu of paintings, e.g. a few frame pieces of nice ceramics such as those by Spin in the kitchen counter area (e.g. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&q=spin+ceramics&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1439&bih=780&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=0tOvT-bGIoPnrAfOv9m1CQ). We were looking for something simple - like a single apple on a big white canvas for the dining room. But after some hard searching this weekend, we actually got a painting for the dining room. It's a bit non-mainstream but I find it amusing. Not up yet tho. Need to figure out how to measure/align on the wall. But I do think we need a statement piece in the living room. Something fairly big and long, say 2m length x 1m height. Still looking!
  22. I prefer something subtle - more art than poster. Not wall paper. Something like a statement piece? But I think finding suitable art pieces requires some degree of 'fate'... so far, seen lots that I like but few that I can afford. Ok, these are really really pricey - just FYI in case there are people who are interested... I was also quite 'stunned' by some of the 'discounted' prices. For those who are looking for nice outdoor furniture, you may like to pop by Marquis at Tai Seng. They have been having sales on the EMU range for a while. So far, still one of the best 'metal' type outdoor furniture that I have seen (not a fan of faux rattan or heavy teak pieces). More here: http://emrenoblog.wordpress.com/2012/05/13/pre-gss-2012-promotions-at-marquis/ For those who would like to get authentic Tom Dixon Beat lamps, XTRA is having promo - 3 of various sizes @ $1.6K. Not cheap but you are getting the original stuff. Quite a number of other offers you may like to have a look at. More here: http://emrenoblog.wordpress.com/2012/05/13/xtra-spring-summer-deals/
  23. Do let us know if HDB approves adding a new WC.
  24. We are still searching for a common style that we both like. I tend to lean towards the cute or grotesque/disturbing or a mixture of both, which he vetoes. He goes for patterns or subject matters that I veto. So between the 2 of us, we veto like 99 out of 100 pieces we come across. The 2 walls we have problems with are: Behind the sofa: Dining area: We would like something with 'impact', but not so much that it's 'jarring'. Just not too vintage cos it doesn't suit my place... I think the bedrooms are more forgiving in terms of style tho. Why don't you share the sites anyway? Even if it may not suit my place, other RT-ers may find it helpful.
  25. Haha, was in the area and wanted to have a look at the 'Float' side table. The display pieces are ok lar, really have 50% off. I like wood (and not MDF) furniture, and realized that nice solid wood furniture with good finishing simply doesn't come cheap. We actually didn't have the budget to do/buy all the stuff we wanted when we were doing the reno, so doing some more stuff/shopping now that we managed to save some $ over the past months. We are also still on the lookout for wall decoration.
