  1. Die. If machine kaput now my wife got somebody to help her ... Better reduce chances of me ending up being stuffed into the LG Tromm... If already know, consider this instructions to suck eggs.. On delivery, ensure the four transit bolts are removed after arrival just before siting. These bolts work like a sports bra helps prevent important bits from bouncing around when moving. Keep them for when you need to move machine to another house. The Courts deliverymen were quite thorough setting my washer up. But they have other deliveries to do too.. Nevertheless have to still ensure the machine is level and sitting rock steady. Check for wobble by pushing on opposite corners. Quite easy to adjust washer feet with the supplied spanner. If you have spirit level lagi best. Best not to let machine touch adjacent cabinet if you have space. Before use, run one or two maintenance washes. Don't use spirits or solvents to remove any gum residues you may see. (Mine was around the rim of the drum very close to the door rubber seal. It went away after two washes. Solvent will eat the rubber.) Always check pockets for coins or keys before putting in washer. Turn clothes inside out if no soiling on outside. Hang clothes inside out to slow down fading. What type detergent to use? Unlike my wife, I don't believe one detergent fits all especially the "whites whiter, colours brighter" claims. She likes to use the liquid recommended for people who live in submarines. Detergents can't tell which is stain which is dye. Best to use different detergents for different loads. Whites/Light colours/Beddings/Towels/Maintenance Wash Powder detergent is best. They contain bleaching agent. Good for stain removal and sanitary for clothes and machine. Cuts down on mould, goo, slime, gunk, grease buildup. Usual suspects are Persil and Spin. Can try Fab white bag or others as long as lalelled for front loaders or low suds or HE (like anti-tank round like that) Premium brands are:- If Greenie - 7th Generation If America Rules! type - Tide HE If wear wool or silk, choose non-bio so won't get holes. Coloured clothes Liquid low suds if you like. Thinner is better than those thick gooey type. Tide HE liquid is the thinnest but also pricey. Washes great but the smell can be better (to me at least) Black and Dark colour Clothes Perwoll Black. Liquid is not black in colour. Great at preventing/slowing down colour fade. Don't use this if seasoning new jeans also Don't use this and then hang dark clothes in direct sunlight afterwards. Defeat purpose. Not widely available though. Last I saw a few bottles at Giant Tampines. Fabric Softener No favourites but don't use on towels. Nice to have soft bouncy towels. But better to have them good at absorbing water from your body. For all detergents, start with recommended dosage. Fine tune by looking at final spin water thru porthole. Should not be too foamy or sudsy. After using machine, soak up the water pooling in the door rubber seal. Should not be much, about the size and shape of an Ikea pencil. Also keep door open if possible to prevent mould buildup. Just check drum for anything thrown in before next wash. (kids may put toys inside)
  2. Hey congrats, $879 is a good price. Was that the killer factor that made you go for this machine? I went to take a peek at Courts when I was at Tampines Mall today to maybe update Lilian on the price. Thought had to tell her the bad news that it is selling at $1099 now. There is cold water wash available but only on the wool/silk program. This program can only take 2kilos though.
  3. Look, you titled this thread to expound how actually not expensive Miele is. I happen to disagree and since this is a forum, I also chip in my two cents. Perhaps you should retitle this thread.. Miele fans!. Come join this thread in praise of its virtues! Where have I slammed others in this thread? Where have i said electrolux, bosch, no good. I don't remember praising LG here. My posts have always been context sensitive to the thread in question. You say Miele not expensive I say... 1. Cost a lot of money to buy here in the first place. More than UK or EU. 2. Built to last 20 years but why special treatment for Sg consumers with Warranty only 1 year? 3. Parts and labour will cost more when (if?) needed. Yes Miele may be Best Buy recommended but the 'Which' review took into account the retail price and warranty in UK and EU not Singapore. I respond to that by voting not to buy Miele until we get at least the same terms here. That is..as long as I don't need to have any roses washed..
  4. . Miele only repairs their products by themselves. Isn't that the case in Sg with regards to most brands?? as u said I pay top dollar for my miele, I will want them to repair. No relevance. Ask a BMW owner if it is alright if BMW make them service his car only at Performance even after the warranty period has passed. Parts and service light reset will not be available anywhere else. Not even at BVO. Tell them, after all, they can afford BMW. Why should they mind? So having paid top dollar for your machine, you are willing to pay top dollar for repair. Tell me again why did you say... Miele Washing Machines!, Expensive?? probably not..
  5. Let me try to keep it short and sweet. Pay $3000 for a Miele washer. You get quality that is made to last 20 years. 1. Why is the warranty only 1 year then? 2. What happens after one year. If a problem crops up, is it cheaper to repair than ordinary machines? Do I save there? 3. Say a $1000 washer needing a $800 repair. Will that owner feel worse than a Miele owner needing an $800 repair. 4. Is a 20 year old Miele like my grandfather's hammer? My father changed the head when it was passed down to him. I changed the handle when it was passed down to me. Oddly, it is still referred to as My grandfather's hammer. I don't understand your poison-poison point. The comments in my link were made by the same guy who wrote the glowing Miele piece that you quoted wholesale in your OP. You don't see the relationship in my link to your paean to Miele? Let me sum up:- After paying top dollar for the product at first, be prepared to pay top dollar if things go wrong. Miele is making it such that all the top dollar must only go to them. You claim you are not rich... Nah.. don't be modest.
  6. $999 for the EWF1495 is very attractive considering the features offered. Its hard to resist taking a punt. Just be thorough checking pockets for coins and weigh the cost of any additional warranty if offered. The next Electrolux with similar or better features would be the Made in Italy EWN14991, but that's selling for about $1900.
  7. Normal washing machine spin dry is not totally dry. Still damp. You must then hang dry on clothesline/bamboo poles or put in a dryer. There is also a two in one machine called a washer/dryer. After spin dry, the machine will operate as a tumble dryer. However, the drying capacity is usually only half of the max. washing capacity. Hang dry Free Sunshine is the best antibacterial Can dry to a nice crisp Tumble Dryer Not subject to location relative to sun Not subject to vagaries of weather No colour fade due to sunlight
  8. Miele Washing Machines!, Expensive?? probably not.. I beg to differ, especially in Singapore.. The aforementioned washerhelp.co.uk reviewed the midrange W864 and the high end W3740. The quoted prices were 500UK Pounds and 700UK Pounds respectively. What is that in Singdollar? We Singaporeans are always susceptible to being gouged by distributors of premium German brands that we may think $3888 for their lower end washer dryer bundle is a terrific deal. Below is an article of interest wrt Miele washers. The arguments in the comments section make worthwhile reading. Potentially Restrictive Practices in Miele washing machines
  9. Eleven pages of feedback from Aussie owners here. The main concerns were:- -coins/buttons may cause major damage. -circuit board (just like the 'icer' experienced in the SingaporeBride link above)
  10. I first saw model WD14331AD at Courts AMK in March . Did not buy there because went to research and compare with other brands and models first. Finally purchased at Courts Megamall in April. I saw it still being advertised in The Straits Times two weekends ago. Hope still available for you Lilian.
  11. Yup. LG WD14331AD Washer Dryer. Started washer shopping with wifey in March when old Ariston Margherita start making terrible banging and screeching noise after 7 problem-free years. Sounds like bearing or fractured drum spider. Bo bay chow liao. Must buy new washer. Don't make economic sense to repair. Saw the LG. Through my eyes.. -Special Offer $899 only, big drop from $1699. Wah! At that price, nothing comes close. -1400 spin speed. Higher better, need less time to dry. -DD. Big motor driving drum directly. The techy in me says this is not a gimmick. -Looks like a well built quality machine overall. Through wifey's eyes.. -LG? Alamak! Pekak Korean brand. Visitors to kitchen sure see no up. -Cheapskate Hubby trying to get away spending less -If good why salesmen keep recommending Electrolux instead? -Not bad got PAUSE feature. Always forgetting something to throw in last minute. -Not bad 8kg. Can shove in bedspread or curtain and get hubby to hang dry. And if machine turns out to be lousy, can shove hubby inside then will personally hang hubby to dry. So we got the LG. I told my wife if we got visitors to impress in the kitchen, start vacuuming. Our vacuum cleaner is a red MIELE.
  12. I've given so many PROs but since LG still have not given me a commission... Here is one CON so far... The child lock function will disable all buttons except the POWER button. But this POWER button is the same shape and in the same row as other buttons. If you langgar or the kids touch the button. The machine will cut off. When this happens it has no memory of what is was doing before the power got cut. Another thing... Only a few will think this is a CON. The machine will give a cuckoo clock chime when the wash is complete. But only once. Then it switches itself completely off (display off, power light off). There is no constant or periodic reminder and since it is so quiet when running, no one is the wiser if not told the laundry is ready.
  13. Yes there is a delay start. Max 19 hrs Min 3 hrs. There is also delay rinsing. Best part is there is also a PLAY/PAUSE button like a DVD player. You know, for those occasions where you want to add an item to launder when the machine is already running... I don't have a need to use the dryer feature either but due to the promotion, this machine cost less than the LG w/o dryer yet with slower spin speed. Go figure!
  14. True. WD14331 is older model. No cold water option. Minimum temp is 30 degrees. I reckon just to raise to that temp the extra juice needed is negligible. After all what's the temp of raw water from pipe in Singapore? Anyway, detergents need a minimum temp for the enzymes and agents to work their best. Machines running cold wash only will also encourage black mould forming. Yes DD is so quiet you tend to notice the pump noise instead. Don't resist. Its a great buy! The controls are not as modern looking as newer models. There are two separate displays with large readouts (the alpha not the screen). One for spin speed, the other gives the time to completion. It doesn't look dated or gimmicky. More timeless classic looking. Like a good German machine.
  15. When we first ran the machine, it is so quiet that we have to go near, look thru the porthole and see the clothes turning and tumbling to confirm the machine is ON.
  16. 8kg is the maximum capacity. The better models these days have load sensing and will not fill or run as if there's 8 kilo load all the time. To give you a better idea of my wash routine:- Daily I separate whites/light coloured/colourfast from non-whites. So my washload averages about 4kg daily. These clothes are normally not soiled, just perspired on. The LG has a short 30mins 30 degree program. Using shorter program daily saves a lot on electricity and water. This on top of the machine being a 'Green Label' washer. For machine care I use cotton 60 degree program for beddings and towels. Sensing around 8 kilos, the LG washer will give a time estimate of about 2hrs. But that's ok. I only use this program once a fortnight or every ten days. As a matter of fact you must run this program at least once a month even if you have no load for the machine's well being. How do I know I'm not loading more than 8 kilos? You can put the laundry bag on the bathroom scale, or use a cheap $2 pullspring scale like a karung guni man. Why LG? Getting a high end model for the price of a midrange European brand Well built and just look at sohck's machine above. Direct drive is a good thing. Machine runs very quietly. Any residual sound you can hear, sounds like its made by an expensive machine. The negative LG feedback above? That was for an older, lower-end Asian type LG washer. Not the one you're considering.
  17. According to your logic. Piston engines have been a round a lot longer. So Frank Whittle need not have invented the jet engine. Old is best. Keep things the way they are. I'm not against the reputable brands. If you have the budget do go for the high end Bosch or Electrolux What I'm against is blind faith in badging. No way you are getting the same quality and features if you're getting their middling Thai made range. You also quoted only one part of washerhelp.co.uk The quote that gave me confidence to go for the LG was.. "The LG washing machine is easy to work on from a repairman's point of view and looks like a decent product." All this is only my humble opinion of course. What I guarantee though is no twisting of logic or blinkered luddism.
  18. True. Before I bought while researching, I came across horror stories of LG users online. But then again, there were brickbats against Electrolux and Bosch too. If you really dig, there are gripes even about Miele online. Not easy to find though because if I hv problems with my Miele, I will be shy to broadcast after spending that much. My Thomson lasted 7 years with no servicing done and no problems encountered. Same goes for my subsequent Ariston Margherita. So the total cost was about $1800 for 14 years. If my LG last for the same number of years, my outlay will be $2700 for 21 years. Should I have stretched for a Miele from the beginning? In the end its down to gut feel and experience. The LG Tromm range is different from the LG Asian top loading type. I like the overall build quality and the technology USP I'm getting. Asian brands trying to sell European type washers have to come up with a Unique Selling Proposition. Is direct drive a gimmick like silver nano? No. Its a big custom motor designed to specifically turn a washing machine drum directly. Its pancake flat and looks like a radial engine in old aircraft. Normal washing machines use smaller generic motors which turns the drum via a belt. Big motors have bigger torque. Also it is better to transmit drive directly to the drum rather than by pulley multiplier. The LG motor spinning the drum at 1400rpm is doing just 1400 rpm. A conventional belt drive motor needs to spin many times that speed if the drum is to achieve 1400rpm. So the LG motor is more relaxed and should last longer and since there's no belt tension, the bearing also should last longer. That's why LG is confident to offer 10yr warranty on its motor. I'll take that anyday because the motor is the hardest working part of a washing machine. Caveat: I'm no way associated with LG nor do I profit if you buy its products. As a matter of fact, I was constantly steered towards Bosch and Electrolux when I showed interest in this discounted LG. I countered that at similar price point, the Bosch and Electrolux models are Thai made and are lower spec than this LG.
  19. Drums must move in order to turn. Maybe she means she prefers Asian top loading machines. Tell her aside from efficiency, European type horizontal axis* machines are much gentler on clothes. *Cannot just say front loading as there are European top loading machines also to confuse things.
  20. I bought the LG washer dryer and am very happy with it. For all brands, aside from drum capacity, spin speed goes higher as you go up the model range. The LG Tromm WD14331 AD has 8kg capacity and 1400 max spin speed. It is selling for $899 at Courts. To get 8kg and 1400 spin speed from a Bosch or Electrolux you have to pay minimum $1600. Its a bargain washer even if you don't use the dryer function. My previous washers were Thomson and Ariston. The LG's build quality is as good if not better. It runs near silently and with no fuss even at full speed. Easy to use and the knob turns with a luxurious feel. Your dilemma wrt Korean brand made in Korea vs Reputable brand made in Thailand is a lot like the budget car argument. My take is this. If you want to get a European washer. Go the whole hog. Get the Electrolux EWN14991 $1800. European made. Or, a German made Bosch or the ultimate - a Miele with honeycomb drum. Anything lower is always a compromise.
  21. I am using the same machine but doesn't look like its using 10 pails every wash. (didn't actually route the pipe to pails so may be wrong) My guess more water usage if you set to "Rinse+" or added "Pre-Wash". For daily washing I use the "Quick 30" mode. I only use the cotton mode when I launder bedsheets or towels. I've had the LG for a month and am happy with it. Really shopped around and did homework. Considered Electrolux and Bosch. Being a techno early adopter geek, fell for the direct-drive. If the thing conks out, I can use the motor to make wind turbine. Didn't need the dryer feature but this model was on sale at 899. Surprisingly was cheaper than the washer only model which has selling at abt 1100. $200 less get 1400rpm plus dryer feature summore, so no brainer lah. What I like- DD motor. Quiet even spinning at top speed. Built and feels like a European washer. Price What I don't like- Child Lock Function* Disables all buttons except "Power". Problem is this button is in the same row and looks just like the other buttons. Tried using the dryer function just to check whether it works. Clothes have sulphur like smell (Dryer smell?) Takes too long. Electricity consumption. (Heating things up always suck more juice) But I don't mind if the dryer functions suck. Singapore has free sunshine all year round. Clothes dried under the sun always nice and crispy and sunlight is the best antibacterial agent. *There's an LG reviewer who complained the child lock function doesn't work. Everytime he puts his kids inside the machine they manage to get out.
