  1. Hi Cutie Cat My TV wall in my new living room to the opposite wall is 4.7 meters. I bought a 47" LED. In my current bedroom, its probably 3.7 meters and I am using a 42" LCD. It sure looked big when I first put it in, but after a while I am used to it and I like the size. If budget allowed, I would have bought a 55" or 60" for my living area. There are many theories on what size is appropriate which you can google online. Speaking from personal experience, 42" is very ample, but if budget allows go for the 47". Btw, I visited someone's home whose bedroom is small and is using a projector! Its definitely about 80" of viewing pleasure! Buy whatever that tickles your fancy, go for it! One thing to note, your TV is just next to your window. Reflection is going to be a problem. You might have to use LED or LCD. WIth plasmas, you have to close your curtains in the daytime to watch.
  2. Things that I had put into consideration: Flame size- I like more heat. Most European cook tops are rated at 3 kW. I bought my Electrolux at 4kW. Rinnai and Fujioh have higher heat specifications as well. Bosch domino has 6 kW for a single burner and the price is very much more expensive. Aesthetics- Of course this will be the deciding factor as we want the looks to match the kitchen set up. The stainless steel tops for most that I have seen looked passe. The ones that are nice usually cost a lot too. Being a fusspot, I also preferred the thick cast iron stands. You should try and remove everything on the top to see if it is easy to remove for cleaning. Geomancy: 4 burners apparently are not good. Why? Maybe you can google and find out. I just followed people's advice. What brands are good? Spending much time reading renotalk has indicated Fujioh as a great choice. I have used my last cook top for 12 years and till date it is still functioning like new, besides the look because of wear and tear. Safety wise, just ensure they have the safety valve option. Other forums have recommended that the switches be located at the right or left side to prevent children from turning it on. Glass wise, everyone recommends Schott Schering. Thats what I found out about cook tops. "Btw, I am thinking not to install kitchen sliding glass. What kind of hood should I look for in this case?" ( I don't know what you mean) But here goes for hoods, the only real difference that I think matters is the extraction rate. The more the merrier. Downside is noise. So think about what is a good compromise. I bought my Bosch Island chimney at 900m3/hr. It runs at 65db. Bosch is a good brand and island chimney choices are quite limited and they are very pricey. Mayer has a wide range of hoods. If not just go for the packages like Fujioh or Rinnai has.
  3. 4mm? It has a frame then. I thought you were talking about frameless shower panels.
  4. This looks like a case of bad installation. It was not bolted tightly. I have seen some buildings that have shop front glass and have their bolts half way out of their clamps. These glasses stretch up to 4 meters in height. I can't imagine if the glass were to fall off. All the glass panels reverberate when the swing doors are being opened and closed. My suggestion to you if you are worried one day the glass breaks and fragments will fly and harm your family members, is to have the outside of the glass laminated. That way even if it breaks, it will not even crumble down, less to say shatter and fly in all directions. But please do remember to laminate the outside part.(not the surface in the shower area) There will be certain rainbow effects if there were water moisture creeps in between the film and the glass. But I think that's a good compromise.
  5. The oppo 83SE I heard is fantastic for music. You may find second hand ones in the market now since the BDP 95 is out. Or why not get the 95 if budget allows?
  6. Personally, I just bought a front loader. reasons why; - The hot water function is good for better cleaning. It is especially useful when you are going to have kids. - The technology in front loaders is better researched. You seldom see any breakthroughs for toploaders. Having said that, top loaders do last for a very long time. I had two. - Aesthetically it is very much nicer to look at. - You have the option of stacking it up. - Clothes washing is much gentler. - Water used in Fls is less than toploaders. I am using the Electrolux which has time manager. I can adjust the time for very short washes. So electricity wise, consumption is about the same. - Spin cycles reach up to 1400 rpms. This is good for towels and jeans, takes a shorter time to dry. Saves electricity on the dryer.
  7. I remembered reading one of the threads saying instant water heaters are not meant to be used with rain showers. Some forumer's heater broke and the store salesperson told them it will not work due to that circumstance and there was some argument. Do a search, you will be able to find that thread. Water storage heaters act as a tank holding water. So if it placed above your shower area, the water pressure will be better as compared getting directly from the source. For my place, I am having two storage heaters built in for each bathroom. I bought a 50l Joven for the mbr.( I know a lot of people think this is excessive, but with my rain shower head at 350 by 350, and a wife who loves to have a very long hot, steamy shower (literally, no other innuendos meant here), I think it is necessary. The other bathroom which is going to be under utilized at the moment for our pets, before our kid arrives will be sufficient. Again why two heaters, the convenience of having to go daily out of the room to turn the heater on is going to be a drag especially when we just wake. And the chances of forgetting to turn it off will be high. Age is creeping up fast with me and my wife thinks I already have dementia. She always gives me all her gingko nuts in her soup. I have a memory comparable with a goldfish. And also because my bathrooms are not located back to back, plumbing and concealing was going to be an issue, aesthetically and cost wise. Last and not least, storage heaters are proven to have long lifespans and they have long warranties to give you a peace of mind. Price wise, to me, I think it is very fair. It is not expensive. If you want to know where to get the heater at a cheaper price, PM me and I will let you know. PS Use a false ceiling to cover the heater.
  8. Sometimes it is wiser to buy the bigger unit now. When you have realized the hot water is insufficient (wife shrieking and cursing), it will cost even more to replace. 50l is a safe choice.
  9. That someone is deeply misconstrued with facts. Rimblock has given a very clear explanation so I shan't elaborate. The only truth in that statement is that the heater will continue to maintain the temperaure if you leave it on. This will result in higher electrical bills. Heating elements will continue to heat if thermostats are not working. I am installing individual units of Joven heaters in my bathrooms. Apparently in this forum, Joven is well recommended. Hope this helps.
  10. Change the padlock on your main gate immediately. If that still worries you, install a turn lock on the inside or small padlock. That way no one can open the door from the outside.
  11. If only we were staying in the states, the items there are simply gorgeous. Btw, I saw a very similar looking faucet in Balestier going for around $300. So definitely there are savings to be made online.
  12. Hi Martin, I must say your tiles are up fast. Did your contractor conduct a water tightness test before you had your tiles laid? How many tilers were working at your place? I must say your works are fast, as compared to mine. They are now applying the waterproof screed and I have told them to do a water test for two days to see if there is any leakage. Even though there is a five year guarantee, I doubt anyone will want to have to move out to have the bathroom rehacked and waterproofed again. I also noticed you are doing a HT system in your house. Nice system by the way. I am installing one in my place as well. Is there anything I should know about placements and installation? I am a complete noob on this. Cheers!
  13. I bought the 551 model as well. So far everywhere I went for quotes, no one had doubts about this fridge. In fact they said it was good. Other fridges that I had asked were replied with doubts. My neighbor has one too and she has used it for a year and she said it is good. This was one of the refrigerators with a very low consumption rating if you are pedantic about power consumption. Hope this helps.
  14. Try calling Shanghai Tong .Li. They might have that
  15. The guys at HN do know when people are pulling a fast one. I did my research and I quoted honestly what lowest prices I got verbally. They went to check their books if they could beat or match, and usually they can beat. Only certain promotional items that were already on sale, they could only match. Go to the one in Millenia Walk. They are having a renovation sale.
  16. Check your prices with the other smaller shops and then ask HN if they can beat it. I got most of my stuff from HN. Sanitary ware, you can try Ideal Bathrooms in Balestier. They have 30% of Bravat and 20% off for Ideal Standard.
  17. No, actually please do elaborate your experience with Wharfedale speakers. I am sure many in this forum will benefit from your insight. And what are the speakers that are better in your point of view?
  18. I don't think so. I was quoted $200 per door frame and the door is the same price. I know it sounds ridiculous for a door frame to cost almost as much as the door. I am going to use steel frames and paint them black, since my doors are black. And the steel frames will outlast the wood if they are not in a wet area and they are much cheaper I think.
  19. No worries at all. I am glad to share. If you are living in the north region, I can suggest where to get the paints at a good price. I don't know if they are the cheapest island wide but their range is excellent and I have found their prices to be very fair. PM me if you need the shop's name. Edenstrauss is a good living testament to Nippon paint then. Eight years is long overdue for another paint job.
  20. Emobebe: Yes, I happen to see that in my reno quotes too. They always say exclude ICI. Nippon is always recommended and you are definitely right on the price issue. My sister had her EM painted and was quoted $1800 with ICI. I don't know if that would give you a good reference point for price. Where else, mine is a two bedder apartment at 1527 sq ft is quoted at $1600 with any paint besides ICI and odourless paint.Hope this gives you a better bench mark on how much you should be charged. Maydream_1: You are right on that point as well. At the end of the day, the color options will be the deciding factor. SMJAS: Flat: http://www.nipponpaint.com.sg/products/int...-ceiling-paint/ http://www.nipponpaint.com.sg/products/int...emulsion-paint/ (Ceiling paints) Semi Gloss: http://www.nipponpaint.com.sg/products/int...yl-silk-finish/ http://www.nipponpaint.com.sg/products/int...-less-easywash/ http://www.nipponpaint.com.sg/products/int...h-with-teflon/( These are meant more for living room, bedroom walls) Gloss: http://www.nipponpaint.com.sg/products/int...anti-bacterial/ ( This is with anti fungal and is water proof, but the finish is not stated, I would presume this is best for bathrooms) Due to marketing, they have defined their segments differently now as what I used to know before. I have based these descriptions as per their website as a base point for semi, gloss and matt, eg living room, bathroom and ceiling. Anyone whom has used Nippon, care to share if I have made the correct recommendations? Cheers.
  21. Price wise, ICI is definitely premium. Then there is the odourless etc. Brand wise, I don't think there is much of a difference. I have used two of the brands and usually the wear and tear is the same. Things to note more importantly, bathrooms and kitchen it is recommended to use gloss, they are better moisture repellants. Ceilings can use flat. They help cover bad workmanship of plastering if there is any and living room, bed room walls can use semi gloss. You can use a damp cloth to clean the walls if there are any mishaps on semi gloss walls. Flat paint when cleaned would leave marks. These are my past experiences. Hope this helps.
  22. Haha that sounds like a good game plan to discourage them. Put pictures on back of the toilet door to demostrate on how the toilet is to be used and sat upon. Then write a disclaimer to safekeep yourself from their strange habits. "Bomb" proof WC.. http://www.infolink.com.au/c/Britex/New-st...-Britex-n778575 This I doubt will break.
  23. Firstly, are there people still squatting on toilets when now most toilets are the seated kind? I can understand if women in public toilets do not seat on them. But at home, why squat when one can seat? Isn't that more ergonomical? haha If you are worried of cracking or damage to the closet, don't use wall hung. Use one that has a big flat base. I doubt ceramic will break when a larger person sits on it. Mostly seat covers will break and they are easily replaceable. Personally I have heard of one person complaining problems using one of the above brands you have mentioned. I am avoiding that. Geberit systems are one of the best flushing systems. One flush is all you need to do, unlike many others where you have to flush twice. One of my criterias in purchasing my water closet is that it must be Geberit. Personally I have not tried, but the many feedback I get from them, it seems they are very good.
  24. Its time I made contributions to Renotalk after lurking and learning many tips and getting savings for my ongoing renoworks in my home. In the papers there has been a report of price increase in commodities. Rubber prices have increased by 30%. I was shopping for mattresses and it has been made know to me next month there would be a price increase. This was made known to me even before newpaper reports on rubber commodity prices have increased significantly. So I have doubts it is sales talk and banter. Anyways I have bought my kingsize mattress from Dunlopillo and had a good deal. I was supposed to get a Serta but somehow the group buy did not materialize and my pms have not been replied. So bargain hunters like me who are buying a mattress in the very near future, beware and take note of the price increase. Happy hunting.
