    We had the air-con vendor come in yesterday to run the piping and I have to say their workmanship is really good as reviewed by the other forumers. They also cleared up the debris and waste after the installation was done. The position of the units and routing of the trunkings were straightforward for most of the rooms except for the living room. Due to the design requirements of L-boxes above the sofa as well as the other side of the wall in the study, we could only place it on the beam above the passageway entrance. This should be a more or less standard practice for most BTO flats with similar passageway layouts. As the study wall is hacked right up to the beam, the only way is to route the trunking just above the household shelter and bathroom doors. If we choose to conceal this trunking in the passageway, the only feasible solution is to lower the study wall from the beam and to drop the false ceiling all the way down to the height of the doors. This will cause the passageway to appear narrower but we should be able to live with it. Material and Tools Living Room Study Bedroom 1

    Yes, using a switch will be the most cost efficient and straightforward solution.

    Cat7 is meant for 10 Gigabit networks and I really don't see it becoming mainstream for consumers within the next 4 to 5 years. Having said that, Cat6 is still capable of supporting 10 Gigabit networks if properly laid and terminated but at shorter distances of course, though it is unlikely to exceed the recommended 37m in the worst case scenarios for HDB homes. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_6_cable

    All this structured cabling and self termination is new to me as well, just decided I want to go down this route and "force" myself to pick up some knowledge.

    Just ordered 2 of these patch panels each from Amazon along with the Platinum Tools EZ-RJ45 crimping tool and connectors. I decided to spend a little more on the proprietary crimping tool and connectors instead of the standard ones as I will be crimping plenty of cables and these are definitely easier on the noob. TRENDnet TC-P12C6 12-Port Patch Panel - Using 2 of these instead of a single 24-port version to reduce the width of the shelf required to house them and also because my switch's ports come in a 12 ports by 2 rows configuration TRENDnet TC-P08C6 8-Port Patch Panel - 1 unit for the study desk and another unit for the TV console instead of using multiple faceplate terminations

    Actually this is the main reason why I insist on running my own fibre from the TP in the utility closet to the TV console area so that I can place my ONT there but it's more for the possibility of subscribing to internet and pay-TV with different providers. Like you said, this should be inapplicable to majority of users and more of a nice to have.

    Hi skins, yes what you have in mind is perfectly feasible. You just have to ensure that the utility closet has a cat6 cable link to wherever you intend to place your router.

    AS far as I know, many of the ISPs officially supports "direct ONT" connection where you can use your own router simply by connecting it to the ONT without any additional VLAN tagging or configuration required, but not SingTel. On your question of extending the coverage of your wireless network, you will just need to connect a second router to the SingTel router in bridged mode to do so, since you intend to lay a cable to your bedroom. In our case, StarHub's HomeHub 200 is the first choice at the moment as we are looking more for a all-round package to cater to our needs instead of the fastest connection available. We are still unable to sign up for any ISP as the fibre link to our block hasn't been activated yet.

    Progress is now halted to allow HDB to screed the entire unit and we were informed that it may actually take as long as the standard 3 to 4 weeks timeline that HDB advises when submitting the applications.

    I also had a similar issue with non-matching tiles for my kitchen bases but luckily I spotted it when they have only completed the washer base. I brought it up to my ID and it has been resolved 2 days later. If you feel it is an eyesore for you, you should just go ahead and ask for the kerbs to be retiled.

    Time for another daily update! The fridge, kitchen cabinet and washer bases were all completed with the right tiles this time. This is some very prompt rectification considering I only pointed out the issue with the tiles on Saturday morning. The hollow block walls for the study and shoe cabinet were also finished with a really smooth plaster. For someone like me who can be really uptight with symmetry and straight lines, I can't really find fault with such workmanship. If only we have the budget to have them screed the floor.

    $195 from JFL Electronics, Sim Lim Tower #03-34. I think their cable price is reasonable enough but some of their other items can be pricey, so do compare prices if you can. The previous 2 occasions I went around scouting the prices, a lot of shops were carrying Schneider (Clipsal used to have network cable product lines) for around $150. I also asked for Belden and was told it will be $200+ which is way above my budget.

    Just updated the network plan under post 9. http://www.renotalk.com/forum/topic/62881-4-years-in-the-making-punggol-emerald/?p=827230 Over the weekend, I just picked up a 1000ft reel of 3M cat6 cable along with some dual-port face plates and keystone jacks. As electrical works will be the first item to restart the renovation process after the HDB cement screed, I better have it ready on standby. For the rest of the items such as patch panels, RJ45 connectors and tools, I will be getting them from Amazon. The electrician will be laying the cables trunking them before the ceiling works so that we can conceal as much of them as possible and the rest will be concealed by carpentry wherever possible.

    Hi bianzi, if you refer to my inspiration for the study, you will notice they have full length glass panels and we really like how it opens up the space and with the introduction of more light into the passageway. This was part of our design requirements right from the start. Along the way, it evolved to a low wall as half height was too high for us while full height glass panels are a little common. We thought with the low wall, we will also be able to lean some display items against the glass panels.

    Hi mishmash, it is good to see more homeowners considering structured cabling for their new homes. Most consumer switches are plug and play and do not require any configuration and unless you are planning to deploy a managed switch, as in my case, you need not be concerned with this aspect. In terms of the wireless router location, placing it in the living is hardly the centralized location for most HDB units and poor signals or blind spots are likely to be experienced in the main bedroom. So, if you are able to shift it to either of the common bedrooms, that will likely boost the all round coverage of your wireless network.

    The fridge, kitchen cabinet, washers bases and new walls are being worked on concurrently by the tiler. There is a slight issue of non-conformity with the tiles used for the kitchen bases but AL was quick to acknowledge the problem and swiftly made the necessary arrangements to correct it.

    Study's passageway wall is hacked and a low wall will be erected in its place as the base to hold the aluminium framed glass panels. Kitchen entrance wall on the right is also removed to allow us to shift the door to the right. A wall with full height shoe cabinet in front of it will be built in place of the original entry point.

    Hacking was done yesterday and these are the only photos I took before I got out of my unit as the dust started filling the air. I will only be back tomorrow to check on the completed hacking and all the tiled bases.

    I am away on ICT this week so the updates may not be as regular as I prefer. The renovation permit has been approved and hacking is scheduled to be carried out on this Thursday, Friday and the following Monday. The hacking of our study wall and kitchen entrance is to be concurrently carried out together with the fridge and washer bases wet works. Once these two items have been completed, there will be a break for the HDB screed to be done before the rest of the renovation works begin. AL has also provided us with a Gantt chart based renovation schedule so that we can better anticipate which appliances or client supplied items to have ready at each stage of the process.

    The reason why I asked was because we actually laid down a deposit 2 years back. We chose to do so that early when we were just window shopping were mainly due to the promotion they had as well as the selling style of the salesperson. He was the mature, steady and non-pushy type, which appeals greatly to me who have been in retail sales before. We went back in December last year to check if the prices of our selected models have dipped so we could lock the lower prices in again. This different salesperson was on duty and my wife and I just were literally rolling our eyes to each other, stealthy of course, as he peppered his sales pitch with plenty of lame jokes and nonsensical ramblings. Anyway, we were at the new flagship outlet again to check on prices during another sale just 2 weeks ago and chanced upon the salesperson whom we paid the deposit with. We just set ourselves up as prospective customers and he still rendered the same sincere type of service as years ago. Upon showing him the invoice and learning that we were his customers, he got more affable and we even had a short chat on personal matters.

    Just curious, which Robinsons outlet did you go to? Was it the Centrepoint one and does the salesperson wear glasses?
