  1. If it doesn't need to be made of wood, I think u might be able to purchase a roundish plastic version that's standing on chrome leggings. It need not necessarily be labelled a bedside table. I recalled coming across a round mini console (with 1 mini drawer) that's used for placing a telephone at one of the heartland furniture shops. That could double-up as a bedside table if the height isn't an issue. U could look around at those small furniture shops & u'll be surprised at what they have in their catelogues.
  2. oooh, the pinkish hues of the broken marble flooring still looks good. But when u talk about earthy tones, are u referring to those brownish, beigey sort of colours? White is definitely a safe choice becox it'll match with almost all the tiles regardless of colours. But I do understand that it might be "boring" & u would want your own colour schemes rather than taking after what your sellers did for the flat. However, if u are going for earthy tones, would u consider Nippon's Lily White? That's if you still consider that as an "earthy" tone. It's a milky beigey sort of shade if you refer to their colour brochure. It depends on which range of the Nippon paint u might want to consider becox the shade of lily whites varies. e.g. 3 in 1 medifresh's lily white is alot more saturated (intense) as compared to Vinyl Silk's when u refer to their colour brochure. Would u be having a feature wall?
  3. R u able to take a photograph of your pink broken marble flooring to reflect its actual colour?
  4. How's your experience with the Fujioh FX900 kitchen hood? Please do share with us. thanks in advance!
  5. U could look around at furniture shops in the heartland areas. You could ask the shop owners if they have it & they might refer you to their catelogues should it be available. Did u try out IKEA?
  6. More photographs of healthy "babies" reaching out above the soil:
  7. I had been trying to google up its scientific name from search engines but seems like I've lost it as I don't seemed to be able to locate it although there were plenty of photographs of it on the internet. Based on my experience as an owner of such plants, they were descent of the Ginger family. And their roots were bulb like, characterised by a need to "drink" alot of water. Since their threshold for water is high and a flowery plant, they would require fluids & a good amount of sunlight to thrive well. Following the advice of the nursery very closely, I would water the plants at the roots (where the stems sprouts out from the soil) every morning. The amount of water to use would be based on my discretion. If I noticed that the top soil is dry, I would water these potted plants until I see the excess water trickling out from the bottom of the pot. This would mean that the plants have already drunk a sufficient amount of water. However, if there was a heavy downpour the day before or over the night and the soil is say, wet, I would water sparingly. As typical of the characteristics of the GINGER family, new shoots would either grow from the existing bulb-like roots which were buried in the soil, or sprout from any section of the stem. While most of the baby shoots making its way up from the soil are healthy with a fat, stout-looking "physique", I had my fair share of "babies" with stunted growth as shown the photograph below: A close-up shot of the puny-looking "baby": The interesting thing is that most of these reed-thin "babies" would still survive but they grow up simply to add on to the numbers of "sisters" in the same pot of plant. They can hardly flower even if they grew up to have a tiny "red corn" characterised by this breed of Ginger plant. (I've decided to assign them a female gender since they are flowering plants, and hence, the term "sisters" ) This photograph shows a stunted adult which had been surviving in a new potted plant for the past 6 months. A sturdy "sister" whose only slightly more than 1 month old & still in the adolescent stage stood strong & tall beside this weak, thin adult. In some cases whereby there is almost a lack of sunlight, these stunted versions would gradually die off on their own even with water & fertiliser. A photograph of the flower bud being pushed out of the "scales" of the "red corn", and having a free fall onto the top soil; we do not remove such buds but left them on the soil as fertiliser. When my hubby spotted the bud on the soil the very first time, he actually wondered what is a dead molly fish doing there...
  8. It might come across as exaggerating to call it a plant sanctuary with jux 3 potted plants. However, I wish to share that these 3 potted plants has imparted a great joy of gardening since the day I acquired them. As such, calling it a plant sanctuary is definitely deserving. The first pot of plant was an evergreen creeper which is commonly known as the money plant. The one problem that I faced with this money plant is that the leaves that come under direct sunlight would have brownish burnt marks on them. And the section that doesn't receive any sunlight would see its leaves & the youngest leaf growing at the end of a "tendril" turning yellow. Well, it pains me a great deal when I see such things happening. When I consulted a 70 year old granny whose a great gardener near our home, she told me repot the money plant & replace the soil because she claimed that money plants are the fussiest species when it comes to using the correct type of soil. When I brought down a sample of my money plant's soil, I was surprised when she told me that the soil was giving the plant problem as it had a very strong stench of urea to it and is definitely not suitable for the plant as they wouldn't thrive with it. Did I take her advice? Even though I believe in every single thing that she has said about my money plant, I didn't implement her recommendations as there were just too much work. And if I were to repot & replace the soil, I'm afraid that it'll end up in a tragic mess. How am I going to cope with recoiling the creeper plant around the pot & the stick which was placed at the centre of the pot? i.e. without hurting its roots & the plant. My current strategy: When I see a section of the soil in the pot "balding", I'll hunt around for nice, healthy money plants, buy them & repot them into my existing pot of money plant. That's a short cut & I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it works. The section of the pot that is "balding" is normally the area that doesn't receive any sunlight at all. Poor plant! [photo pending - on balding spots in the potted $ plant] [photo pending - newly bought $ plant being transplanted into existing pot] Lately, I saw a tendril of money plant making its way uo the wall. What I didn't quite understand is that that tendril didn't get any sunlight apart from lighting from the flourescent light. But why is it thriving so well? I'm feeling so boggled after such observation.
  9. Hi folks, I am a plant lover who picked up gardening as a my hobby during these recent years. Unfortunately, keeping indoor plants isn't encouraged for us according to my taiwanese geomencer. Becox I'm lacking in terms of the earth element & keeping plants, which apparently promotes the wood element is going to "kill" me off. Or perhaps, according to my own interpretation, cause me troubles in one way or another while having plants under the same roof. As such, I had no choice but to keep my plants outside the flat even though my living room has very strong afternoon sun that is good for plants that require lot's of sunlight. But, what's disappointing on the exterior of my flat is that there isn't a huge catchment area for sunlight. There is only 1 miserable hole with a diameter of 60cm or slightly more for sunlight to filter through. As such, I could only place 3 miserable potted plants which I had nicknamed as my "Tree" Musketeers & call that location my plant sanctuary.
  10. Under construction... [photographs on finished product & having cabinets mounted on individually - pending]
  11. When the adhesived sides of the formica strips & the nyatoh cabinet base are almost "cured", the adhesived surface at sticky to touch like how a piece of scotchtape would feel when you touch the sticky side of it. The formica strips are carefully mounted onto the adhesived sides of the nyatoh cabinet base as shown in the photograph below. I had tried to illustrate how the formica is mounted by labelling the photograph with yellow arrows. One end of the formica strip with a numerical digit 1 on the yellow arrow is held on one end of the nyatoh cabinet base & pasted onto it at my hubby's extreme right hand side. Then, he would gradually bring the formica down to the nyatoh adhesived surface, working from the right hand side all the way to the left (see yellow arrow labelled numerical digit 2). Once the formica is mounted onto the nyatoh surface in a satisfactory position, my hubby then secured it by rubbing his palms along the nyatoh cabinet base as shown in the photograph below:
  12. Apart from the nytaoh wood beadings, I would also like to mention that we bought adhesive for pasting formica from LIAN KIM YONG. Although Jennings recommended the Tiger brand adhesive glue, we only required a small tin of the product. As such, we bought the kangaroo brand adhesive which came in a smaller calibration. The photograph below shows the tin of kangaroo brand adhesive from LIAN KIM YONG: A thin layer of adhesive is applied onto the exterior surface of the newly constructed cabinet base and left to "cure" partially prior to mounting any formica on it. In our case, we use an unwanted wooden spatula which came with our bodyshop products eons ago. A ice cream stick could be used as well or any other gadgets so long as u could butter up the area with a thin layer of adhesive. While we waited for the thin adhesive film on the cabinet base to "cure", my hubby started applying thin layers of adhesive onto the reverse side of the newly cut formica strips as shown in the photograph below: The photograph below shows strips of formica with adhesive applied to it and according to my hubby, he claimed that the adhesive works best after time to give for it to partially "cure" before attaching the formica to the nyatoh cabinet base. U will also notice that the photograph shows one of the cabinet sitting on a larger existing cabinet base. We will be taking separating these 3 cabinets by taking them off the base & placing each on its own newly created base so that each could be placed in different bedrooms.
  13. Unwanted newspapers were then placed onto our floor tiles & after careful measurements, my hubby cut up strips of formica using a huge pen-knife & a metal ruler. And becox we didn't have cutters used by the professionals in the carpentry industry, my hubby improvised the smoothening of rough or fraying edges of the formica by using a metal filer as shown in the photograph below:
  14. "Dressing up" the nyatoh cabinet base... After the nyatoh cabinet base has been fabricated as shown in the photograph below, formica would be pasted along the sides facing out. We managed to purchase formica of the same print from JENNINGS at Defu Lane (their block is directly opposite LIAN KIM YONG). But lugging huge roles of formica was challenging becox JENNINGS do not provide delivery & we were on our own after we paid up for the formica. The staff simply rolled up the wide sheets of formica that we bought from them by tying raffia string. The formica were rolled up such that they had wide diameters. We requested that they repack it such that the formica was coiled up tightly into a slimmer roll. That would facilitate carrying it up any vehicle. However, we were told that in doing so, the formica would crack & break off by the time we reach home. Fortunately, a cab that ran into our path looked huge enough to accomodate both my hubby & myself, with that huge roll of formica being placed on our laps. In view of its weight, I earned myself 2 huge bruises, 1 on each fleshy lap!
  15. After the completion of each cabinet base, my hubby took measurements along different sections of the finished product. He told me that this was his idea of quality control to ensure that there wasn't any irregularity in terms of sizing across each individual cabinet base. Otherwise, there would be stability issues when each cabinet sat wobbly onto its base. This photograph shows how the cabinet base would look like after the different lengths of nyatoh beadings had been placed together:
  16. My hubby did some measurement with a ruler and using a pencil, he marked a line onto the longer length of nyatoh beading so that he could use that as a basis for drilling. Holes were then created by the power driller as shown in the photograph below: Nails were then driven into the newly created holes to hold the nyatoh beadings together: If u guys were to ask me if the fabrication process was a breeze, the answer is an absolute NO. My hubby had detected that one of the shorter nyatoh beading was significantly shorter than its counterparts. He improvised this shortfall in length by using electrical trunking left over by our electrician during relocation of power points. And this was how it looked like after he had trimmed off a strip of the electrical trunking, inserted it in place before he did the necessary to hold the beadings & that little strip of trunking in place: I thought that he was very creative & smart in improvising the nyatoh cabinet base using electrical trunking!
  17. Putting things together... A power drill & assortment of tools are required. A longer length of nyatoh beading was placed against 2 other shorter lengths of nyatoh beadings; and held against the kitchen wall prior to drilling as shown in the photograph below:
  18. How we started off... We went down to LIAN KIM YONG CONSTRUCTION PTE LTD @ 37 Defu Lane 10 #01-75 (TEL: 62877467) to purchase nyatoh wood beadings. All the wood beadings in the shop are extremely long. Unless we had our own long vehicle to transport them back home, it was impossible to even bring it up into the car due to its length. As such, we had tried to persuade the lady & guy at Lian Kim Yong Construction to saw them up into the require sizing for fabricating our cabinet base. However, both of then told us that they do not provide such services to their customers. The lady told us that she could provide us with a huge saw & 2 plastic stools so that we could cut up the nyatoh beadings on our own. My hubby sweat it out over 15 minutes and the nyatoh beadings were finally cut down to the required lengths. There were quite a number of workers from neighbouring workshops who stared on as they walked past LIAN KIM YONG while my hubby slogged through the arduous process. The lady (sorry cannot recall her name) was kind enough to pass me tissue papers, which I used to dab the sweat off my hubby's face. She also assured us that we could pay her according to the number of nyatoh beadings my hubby had cut down with her saw. After we paid the bill, she stacked the shortened nyatoh beadings & wrapped them in plastic films which had been commonly used for packaging purposes or protecting furnitures during transportation. By the time we boarded the bus with the mini stack of nyatoh beadings, I mux make this mushy comment that my hubby had been proclaimed a real HERO to saw them up to precision & so neatly without much jagged egdes. Postscript: I wished that I had taken some photographs of the process of sawing up those nyatoh beadings. However, the purchase of those beadings were impromptu. As such, I didn't bring along my camera so no photographs could be taken of my hubby going through that process of trimming down those huge lengths of nyatoh beadings.
  19. Hi folks, I've finally found some time during this rush hour to launch these photos which had been long overdue becox they were taken 4 months ago. We had a row of swing door cabinets sitting on a common cabinet base and because of space constraints in view of our flat layout, my hubby had decided to separate these 3 cabinets. Meaning that they could be used a stand-alones instead of being co-joined as a 3-in-1 cabinet. It did occur to us that we should be getting a carpenter to do the job. However, after checking through the costs of assigning such jobs to a carpenter, it seemed to be pretty expensive. And because we didn't know of any reliable carpenters, my hubby whose the usual HERO in the photos of my threads on renotalk.com, decided to take matters into his own hands. i.e. to fabricate individual base for ALL 3 cabinets. Initially, I was very worried with stability issues pertaining to the cabinets. Afterall, I didn't believe that a layman like himself could accomplish such a job of creating a cabinet base. My hubby was badly harassed by my incessant questioning of his "prowess" to accomplish the assignment. And as usual, he emerged the winner when I gave in to his demands to DIY those 3 sets of cabinet base. He promised me that if he failed to create those cabinet "leggings", he would then let me call in a professional carpenter to do the job. Outcome: He succeeded in creating those 3 sets of cabinet base. Much to my surprise...
  20. My living room, balcony & one of common rooms which we're currently sleeping in, are facing */ west. Of course it's hot but the good thing is that sometimes, we would hang our wet laundry on the window grilles. And they'll dry out fast by the time we are back from work in the evening.
  21. would u mind the name of this guy from darwin interior? I felt sorry for u & hope that things would get better after darwin had rectified these faults.
  22. Hi, if u r interested in shortlisting my contractor along side with your 2 other contractors, I could PM u his number. He has reinstated my bedrooms & the workmanship, service is superb. Please take a lookg at his workmanship at the following link: http://www.renotalk.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=40463&st=0&p=634826&fromsearch=1entry634826
  23. Hi U could go to Seng Hong Temple @ Arumugam Road to consult the taoist priests. They should be able to advise you on the actual procedure. However, I'm not sure if those priests would charge fees for selection of dates for breaking ground. Another cheaper option is to seek the advice of shops selling joss sticks & prayer materials. Best wishes!
  24. Whoa things are moving really fast for u buddy! I don't think u need to sweat or worry when it comes to finishing the race in time! Everything should be moving on really smoothly now that your renovator seems to be moving pretty fast. I think your flat would be completed definitely before christmas. Isn't that great? It was alot better than some of those lousy renovators who drag their feet in delivering renovation!
  25. The 3M spray is a huge bottle that was recommended to me by the Homefix store @ sengkang's compasspoint when I told them that I wanted something to clean off the stains on my aluminium door frames. The sales rep told me that the 3M spray has been used by customers for cleaning their stainless steel gates & refridgerators. I would recommend that u visit any one of their stores & tell them that u require it for cleaning off the rust spots on your stainless steel sink, then see what they recommend. And it'll be great if you could share your findings.
