Installing Aircon in Utility Room Searched high & low on RT and on Google as well but have not been able to find anyone else who installed wall-mount aircon in their utility rooms so I thought I'd share our experience on this. Because utility rooms are built as part of HDB's upgrading exercise, the inner walls are reinforced concrete and hence, cannot be hacked/drilled through. We've tried asking our HDB technical officer, sent him photos of intended aircon trunking route from utility to toilet, and he escalated the issue to his architect and structural side. Reply that came back was no, cannot be done. Our aircon installation is happening this Saturday (a separate review of Creation Air will follow when our reno is done) and we only received HDB's reply on Tuesday. Highly pressed for time, we have been considering various solutions to this problem over the past few days and I think we have finally settled on one. Of course, the easiest way out is to install a window/casement unit aircon. Problem solved. However, since we don't want that (blocks light, not energy efficient, noisy etc), we will be running the trunking out of the utility room door instead. The utility door will be replaced with a slightly shorter one (about 6.5 feet) and we will be boarding up the top part of the frame where the trunking runs through. Then we were faced with another problem: How does the water pipe run past the beam that is outside the utility room? No way can water flow upwards! Made a desperate call to Jaskel, who advised that we can split the trunking so that the gas piping will run back to the outdoor unit and the water pipe will run to the floortrap next to our washing machine (means no need to pass any beams). This also reduces the size of the ugly gas pipe trunking that will run into our bathroom. Shall update again next week after aircon installation is done. Hopefully everything goes according to plan..*crosses fingers*

even at 30% discount, the unity gate is still very costly, right? congrats on deciding on your contractor..ho bee does enjoy pretty good reviews on here, here's wishing you a smooth sailing reno.. when does hacking start?

hey jaskel, thanks again for your advice on the aircon trunking last night.. we will most likely be doing what you said - to split up the water pipe from the gas trunking and then water pipe run to washing machine floortrap. btw, last night we went down to the house - saw your electrician managed to "snake" his way around the gas & water pipes. very neatly done, no idea how he managed to do it! we couldn't see too well last night since there was no light but spotted two mistakes: 1) master room - single power point on right hand side of bed is placed too far. can ask your electrician to move it closer to the bed (maybe abt 1.6m away from the other single power point)? it will block the aircon trunking too, so please ask him to move the point before friday (saturday is a/c installation). 2) toilet - electrician run casing at the top right corner of the doorway.... then my toilet door cannot push in liao..? hope you understand what im talking about.. one last thing, we're intending to get our plasterer to do the false wall, false ceiling and box up from hall to kitchen after this saturday. are there any more wiring works that need to be done before the box up? if yes, then have to do it before saturday liao. let me know, if no objections from your side, i will tell him to go ahead on saturday. thanks!

hey curryqueen, the prices for hacking are really broken down into specifics! noticed u are gonna demolish the walls between living & common room and between master and common room. do check that the prices include making good the walls after hacking.. saw that unity gate at metalworld website too..nice but indeed, the price is

i don't expect my PM to coordinate the outsourced works like speaking to the external contractors and telling them what needs to be done etc. but i would expect my PM to at least tell me the order in which the works should be carried out. A simple example: We outsource plaster & electrical works. After plastering, we arranged for Citygas and electrician to come in. My PM arranged for her plumber to come in. Shouldn't she have advised us that we should get our electrician in first then Citygas & plumber? I wasn't aware until Jaskel visited last night and told us. So now, our electrical casing has got to run around these gas & water pipes whereas it should have been the other way around. All I'm asking for is for information to allow us to ensure that our outsourced works are done rightly. Unfortunately, this information does not come, unless we ask. The epoxy is just a layer of sealer on top of our cement screed floors to prevent stains. Will be done in both rooms, hall & kitchen..

An update seems about due: (I have to try my best to write this as objectively as I can, without turning this into a tirade) We are currently experiencing technical difficulties - just kidding, annoyance and frustration with our renovation. This is largely due to the various "holes" in coordination of works and general lack of proactiveness from our project manager. Lesson learnt: If you want to outsource things in your reno, please make sure you know what you are doing. Don't be lazy (like me) and assume your contractor will coordinate properly for you. Current state of works: a) Tiling of bathroom currently still on-going (as evidenced by Jaskel's photo above) b) Electrical wiring to be done today c) Aircon installation to be done this Saturday (still awaiting HDB's go-ahead on running trunking from utility room to bathroom) What else is left? a) Plaster touch-up & plaster board works (false ceiling, box up etc) b) Painting c) Replacement of doors, windows, gate and grilles d) Carpentry - Kitchen cabinet, bathroom cabinet e) Installation of kitchen & bath fittings f) Installation of lights g) Epoxy coating on floors h) Acid wash/Cleaning

-
wah thats a lot of effort put in! must really your hubby.. like your kitchen sink btw..and your hall floors are so reflective! dangerous to wear skirt in your house..
-
welcome to RT! had no idea you were also another 3-roomer! your floorplan looks alot like mine. will you be hacking the wall between kitchen & hall?
-
wah so much rain water! where are the photos taken? btw, did u decide to plaster your walls in the end?

hey reuben, you must be very excited to receive your 3ds... anyway, just my opinion: - like the tones in the kitchen, very japanese - the breakfast table in the kitchen seems overly narrow for two especially since its elevated - the tv console looks a little "off balance" leh. also, maybe you might want to consider if pairing the black mirror with a darker shade of wood for the console will be better - your bedroom door looks a little too close to the bed what sort of look are you trying to achieve? your hall + kitchen comes across quite japanese, whereas the dining + bedroom looks more "modern contemporary"..
