  1. Hi all, not sure how many still follow this t-blog. In any case, need comments on the following choices for turfing the balcony: A: 20mm pile height. olive and field green with a curled fiber to give a soft bouncy feel, and a rich and lush look B: 30mm pile height. realistic and comfortable high quality artificial turf with four color tones (field green, olive, verde green and beige) side-by-side comparison; A on the RIGHT and B on the LEFT. In terms how it feels under our feet, option A felt like a closely compacted rough-hewn carpet. Option B felt like more prickly yet softer. Without considering the price point, which would you choose?
  2. You mean this clock? Yup, it was handmade. And as far as we know, we have not seen it anywhere else. The reviews from friends and relatives who have been to our place were mixed. Most thought it was showing different time zones. A few had difficulty telling the time even after we showed them how it was suppose to be read. It is a conversational piece haha! We made it using three Rusch clocks and a Ribba frame. Three Rusch clocks - $7.50 Ribba frame - $13.00 Total cost - $20.50 One completed clock - Priceless. The balcony doors were way over $3000 and just a little under $4000.
  3. Hi nonick! You can try Toastbox! Or you can also try Lush at Kim Keat. It's called Zana. The fabric is water resistant. Not removable. A pity. Cause we had wanted to be able to change out the upholstery. Regarding the colour, you should go check it out in-store.
  4. We figured the green carpet will have to go at some point in time. It's not practical when we consume food at the coffee table. And when the dog does poo on the turf, at least it's easier to wash. The price....it's the only reason that is causing us to consider and reconsider. Your house is coming along nicely!!
  5. Hi January, keep the spirits up! The leak at my place never got fixed until November and after numerous visits by the HDB technical officer. I refused to pay HDB the $50 odd charges until I was fully satisfied that my neighbour who is staying above my unit did the repairs. Yours being a condo, should be able to pass the bill to the condo right? A house can have its renovation completed. But a home is always a work in progress. The artificial grass thing costs a bomb, an arm and a leg, and then some! $130 per square metre for "top of the range", including drainage cells, delivery and installation. If I turf my balcony with it, it will be under a thousand dollars... but looking at the results you have achieved with your balcony, I am so tempted.
  6. Really nice pictures of your home renovation. At the Picasa web album, right click and select to copy the location of the image. Then when you are uploading the pictures, click on the "insert image" icon, paste the location of the image. That's what I did. Hope it works!
  7. I met up with my ID/main contractor on 31 Dec 10, yes, he was working that day. He came over to look at the areas we had agree he would make good once the leak in the ceiling of the common toilet was repaired by my upstairs neighbour. I got the impression that you might have approached him for a quotation as well. Good luck with your FYP!
  8. Hi hi! I am so looking forward to seeing the pictures you will be posting up in future.
  9. You are right. We thought it was very do-able, to DIY a track system. Instead of wires, you can use fishing lines. A 10-pounder should more than suffice. However, there were two considerations: first, the knotting must be very good to ensure the knots don't slip. Second, because the frames will not be resting against the wall, wind may cause the frames to either knock against each other or against the wall. In the end, 3M ain't so bad. And it's temporal. If we ever get sick of it, we can remove the prints and hooks without leaving marks.
  10. Hmm, you think so too? Maybe I should take a photo of the same area but with a person seated on the sofa. Hahaha! I am so glad somebody noticed that the frames were leveled. It took about 30-45 minutes to measure and mark out the spots to attached the 3M adhesive hooks. Had to take account of the required spacing in between each frame. The spacings are not 100% symmetrical but looks from viewing distance. Then we realised that old HDB ceilings are not perfectly straight. So I had to fine-tune by adjusting the eyelets that held the wire-cables at the back of the frames. Not much skill. But plenty of patience and a keen eye should suffice. Alternatively, we were thinking of substituting museum/art gallery track systems (too expensive!) with a conventional curtain track with fishing line (cheaper!). But grew less ambitions when we remembered that the prints weigh about 2kgs each.
  11. the repro was purchased from Lush. hmmm, I think the camera distorted the perspective. The distance isn't that great. A person of average height, seated comfortably with hand stretched upwards will just about graze the bottom of the frames. Which was actually the logic we had when determining the height to hang the frames.
  12. Hi rayfox, no, you did not offend anybody. Putting pictures up on forum is to invite responses; good, bad or plain neutral. Can we offer a feeble excuse to put this set of prints up? And that is, the steam engine was a key driver of the industrial revolution and we celebrate this by putting up prints of the London and NorthEast Railway. The time when this set of prints was commissioned is also in the modern era. So this set of prints kinda tie in the industrial look with the modern furniture. Hahahaha! See! I said it was a feeble excuse. So you are probably right. To some (many, perhaps), this set of prints totally seemed out of placed. One man's poison is another's meat. So, no offence taken. Probably should thank you for you honesty.
  13. Hello rickoveron, we bought it from Harvey Norman. It comes as a set with chairs. But we switched the chairs to repro-wishbone bought from Lush. Cannot remember the exact price, but it was definitely more "value for money" if it were bought as a set instead of separates. We got it during the Great Singapore Sale in 2010 at the Millenia Walk. Then, it was mentioned by the sales assistant that this line was going to be discontinued and only two pieces of the larger table (1.8m) were left. The smaller table in the same design measures 1.5m. But the "to be discontinued" sales pitch by the sales assistant could be taken with a pinch of salt. She might have been trying to hurry us into buying it from her.
  14. Thanks for the compliments. Just not sure if you meant only the prints and not where they are placed. Haha! Some people might find juxtaposing (wah piang, placing say placing lah, why must use cheem cheem words!!) the LNER prints discordant with the entire decor. But we thought that was the whole point - to add a splash off colour! A little off tangent but done with our tongues firmly in our cheeks. Yup, it's an el cheapo entry level Jamo speaker system (we are so going to be laughed at by audiophiles in this forum) with an Onkyo amplifier. We have seven speakers in the living room and another two in the dining room. That's for Zone 2. So when we close off the living room with the door panels, peeps in the dining room can listen in to whatever is playing in the living room or choose to listen to a CD/radio/aux source.
  15. We have not taken photos of the dining room since the chairs arrived. Waited five months for them. Reading the renotalk forums, we figured >3 months wait for "not in stock" furniture from Lush is typical. But five months was stretching our patience a little. And the worse part was that the service stuff don't update you of the delays until you call or write in to check. Quite terrible. But they were prompt with out coffee table and sofa set though. First picture shows the dining room area with normal daylight. This one shows it with light from the cove above the dining table. Finally, an oblique top-shot of the dining table and chairs. Happy New Year!
  16. Finally! More pictures to put up. This set shows the coffee table that had replaced the older ikea table. Actually the ikea table fits well with the overall look as well. But wife had set her eyes on this. Me too. This is a close up of the Tom Purvis prints for LNER - London and North Eastern Railway. The six prints form a contiguous coastal landscape. There weren't many places to hang them at home. In fact, we bought an EM just so that we could display these six prints on the same wall. Kidding! We are in a mix now because the front view of the prints will be blocked by the lamp. The best way to view the prints will be as you walk in from the main door towards the living room. Also, a large part of the cement screed wall is covered. I guess the consolation is that nobody will actually stand in front of the prints to look at them, because the person would be blocking the tv. Also, we love some colour at home. We noticed that some homes managed to add colour to their interior tastefully without looking too messy. We hope to do the same.
  17. We would like to think so as well. Feel free to contact my ID. We felt we had an enjoyable time with the renovation because of our careful planning as well as the ID's reliable management of the project. Sure there are some regrets, but mainly it's because we had stuck to our guns and not listened to Steven, our ID. Do shop around.
  18. I've been following your t-blog and envious of your lamps. They should look great in your home. I will be collecting some prints which I have sent for framing today. I will try and take more pictures. Have been lazy.... Shall put up more pictures soon!
  19. Hi csingeu, i have sent you the quotation.
  20. Hi csingeu, I have pm-ed you. good luck with the renovation.
  21. I bet it must be the same carpet you saw at Ikea because we got ours from there. I think it was $99?? Cannot recall. But as with most things, quality does come at a price. The carpet is coarse and quite sparse. It looks surprisingly lush on the photo but it certainly doesn't feel that way.
  22. Hi thanks for the compliments. Regarding the lamp, we did not buy it from the group buy. We bought it from a warehouse in Eunos. We do not recommend buying from that warehouse. For the divider, we did have some afterthoughts. A less expensive and viable option would be a heavy curtain that has a vertical pelmet at the end to hide when not in use. In fact, as a sound room, it reduces unwanted reflections and could be better. Plus, it might be more durable, washable, can change colour of curtain.... etc etc. But you'd better ask the AV experts in this forum regarding sound reduction when playing Rock Band 2. Balcony doors; we also have afterthoughts. Sliding might be better than folding. Simply because folding takes more space to open and close. By the way, may I ask where is your EM located? We had a guest last Sunday who bought an EM with her fiance and they were planning to take over in Jan 11 but the present owners requested for an extension to Mar 11 instead.
  23. This is the view one would have if one stood in the middle of the stairwell with the Random light repro directly overhead, Artichoke repro on the left and the Arco repro on the left. We are cheongsters; because we have alot of cheong stuff (repros) at home! - such a lousy joke. Anyway, as said, the clock (yes, the triptych) is an ikea hack. It is in the middle of the picture. The clock is showing 4 (hour hand) :34 (minute hand) :57 (second hand). So that's three seconds to 4:35pm, since the photos were taken in the day. In the kitchen you can see the sink, hob and hood. In the living room is the tv, woofer, fan, more speakers and the cd trolleys. There is cove lighting everywhere!!!!!!!!!
  24. Huh, really? That last picture was untouched. Thus far, none of the pictures have been processed. But the next one will be processed, because we had stitched together three photos to form a single panoramic picture. I suspect the reason why the last picture looks photoshopped is because of the cove lighting and camera settings. I shall check the exif information and see if it sheds any clues. It's taken by an Olympus 5060wz. Ancient by current standards since I bought it in 2003. I have yet to borrow a lens that is wide enough for taking interior decoration shots with my Canon 400D. You are right about accessories, if by accessories you mean utensils, curtains and fans. Furniture wise, we knew what we wanted. but sourcing for an affordable yet value for money piece was another matter totally. we lived without pails for about 2 plus months because we couldn't find white ones in the correct shade of..... white. I had convinced my wife that a knife block would be the only thing on the kitchen counter. But after I discovered the joys of using a Santoku made of Japanese steel, I gave up that idea. At home, my wife and I hope to live by the mantra of "less is more". and because there was absolutely no clocks that we liked. I decided to do an ikea hack of my own. I was inspired by local designer Hans Tan. I shall show the clock next, together with the panoramic picture.
