  1. I found a cake leveller at Bake It Yourself... i think that'll work well with cutting my whole cake into a layered half!

    Hi ynove,

I think I saw at PH Holland V. Maybe u can call them before making a trip there. Or try Sia Huat too? They might have since they supply to lots of hotels and restaurants.

Ya I think you can bake in a single pan, but it will take longer, so have to monitor it.

  2. hi xaley

For the cake, i was thinking of baking a layered red velvet cake. it's a sponge, i guess?

maybe i should go for a 9" springform pan? hmm.

which phoon huat you went to? i checked out the one in toa payoh and hougang, didn't see the oven probe thing leh.

Cake batters depend on the leavening agent and also on the technique. Honestly, the muffins I made by creaming method turn out fine even after they sat for some time. But for chiffon/light sponge cakes, they have to be baked immediately.

For your 9" cake, what type of cake is it? If it is a more dense cake and would not rise too much, a 10" pan would result in a cake that's not very high. Maybe you could try a smaller version first and test out the oven at the same time?

I've read about probe thermomters, think Phoon Huat has one but I don't know how good it is. I use the simple one, just put inside the oven.

  3. Hi Xaley and all

You're a genius! I've been looking for help regarding this oven for some time. Especially your tip about solid cupcake liners. Thanks for your lengthy explanation.

    Roasting pan

I found a suitable one by Scanpan, but it's to expensive to invest in one small roasting pan when a much cheaper alternative exists, like the one you mentioned. For roasting, what kind of pan is better? Ceramic (Corningware), glass (Pyrex), cast-iron, aluminium, or dark non-stick pan?

    Batter left too long?

I thought cakes and cupcakes will not rise and become dense if the batter is left aside too long. Especially when the baking soda and/or vinegar goes and into the batter and the chemical reaction starts - which is what gives us fluffy, well-risen cakes.

    Pan size conversion

For a recipe that calls for two 9inch by 2inches tall pans for layer cakes, would you recommend that I bake this cake in a single 10-inch springform pan? Just checking out pan size conversions here by allrecipes.com.

    Oven probe

As for oven thermometer, I've read about remote oven probe thermometers. Do you know where I can buy this? This contraption can stick a probe into a roasting meat in the oven, then you can read the temperature off a unit on your countertop remotely. The one you're talking about is the leave-in oven thermometer right?

I don't think there is any roasting pan that suits this oven size. Last time, I also searched high and low for pans that fit.

But if you really want to roast, you can get a square pan (with low sides) and a metal steaming rack (the kind we put in wok/pans to steam things) and use it as a roasting pan. For some recipes, depending on the flavours, you can put sticks of carrots/ lemongrass etc under the meat and act as racks.

...It's true leaving your batter too long is not good, but for cupcakes and muffins, there is no significant difference from my experience. For sponge cakes, put them in a single tray and bake all at once, and then split them into layers afterwards.

I would recommend getting an oven thermometer too, as manual dials tend to become unrealiable over time.

  4. Hi graceakaclouds,

i think you're asking about how to first melt the chocolate before putting it into the fondue pot?

    some options you have:

    1) you have to use the 'steaming' method. boil water in a saucepan, then put a bowl on top to gently melt your chocolate chips. if you heat directly, you'll burn the chocolate. See this video by Epicurious.

    2) some pots come with a 'stack-able' pot on top to do this eg. i have tupperchef (by tupperware) stainless steel pots which are designed for this.

    all the best!

    hi all baking enthusiasts :)

i have been lingering ard this thread but unable to make much contributions :P

anyhow, tiking of doing chocolate fondue....yeah, before putting it into the 'fountain'....any idea how to boil or heat the chocolate such tat it won't burn or overheat?

  5. Hi xaleysan and baking clubbers!

i just jumped onto the baking bandwagon recently. just bought the Tefal Activys OV1002 convection oven 26L. and you're right, it's a bit small!

if any of you, like xaley, have used this before, maybe you can help?

    saw your earlier post:

I use a Tefal 26L tabletop oven (mine is the old model w/o fan). It's been serving me very well but it can a be a bit small sometimes so lately I also purchased a Delonghi tabletop oven.

I've been hunting for a roasting pan (with a rack inside) which can fit into the oven... and I can't!

Most roasting pans can't fit into my oven - they're slightly too big. Do you know of any?

Also, have you tried baking cakes or cupcakes in this oven? I'm excited about baking cupcakes and layer cakes.. but this oven can only fit a 6-muffin tray or a single cake tin, it seems!

thinking of getting a second rack. when i need to bake cupcakes or layer cakes, it's not good to leave the cake batter standing for 30min while waiting for its turn to get into the oven, right?

Actually two racks will not fit two cupcake tins. The space between the two racks is not enough for the cake to rise.

Have you tried - will it fit two 2-inch-tall cake pans - one on each level - if i get an extra oven rack?

    thanks :)

  6. Hi Bing

What's that store opposite Castilla that you bought your stuff from?

super late reply but ffound our dream sofa set plus glass coffee table and tv console fm Sungei Kadut.. (opp castilla)

    total spent:

800 for red L-shape sofa, nice cottony fabric

    199 for glass coffee table

    700 for tv console...

v are v happy with sungei kadut! recommend it to everyone..

  7. Ya lor. Maybe controlled price.

Perhaps I should ask my contractor to source and install the ceiling fan instead of getting directly from KDK. Their installation fees may be more expensive, I dunno. Yet to get a quotation. Anyone tried and compared between KDK direct and contractor's price, including installation?

But mine a bit tricky lah. I have a false ceiling. K charges an arm and a leg for false ceiling. Is it safe to get a contractor to that, then, or would KDK be a safer bet?

    hmm.

i know what u mean by KDK ex, even when i went to my small trusted electrical shop, they only give me a miserable $10 discount for KDK standing fan, not much discount, boo hoo hoo...... but KDK, you are paying for the quality so it should be not bad lor, btw, ignore that "IT" leh

  8. Anyone has experience of buying a fabric sofa from Harvey Norman? Or do you know about the quality of their sofas and where they are made?

I'm looking at their more affordable range, not the Italian or Australian imported sofas.

If I'm not wrong, the range I'm looking at is called Restful Living Essentials, exclusive to Harvey Norman (or so they say).

For example, this sofa called Boston is under this range at a low price of $999 (promo) for fabric 2 seater.

    img_restful_06.jpg

Any comments of service and product quality of furnishing and sofas from Harvey Norman from any of you??

  9. Genuine leather makes a difference to heat retention? I would think that leather would retain more heat and be a bit sticky too!

Heh! Nobody wanna reply but I thought I should make known that the leather sofa we ordered from LUSH came within 8 weeks as promised and we've been enjoying it very much! The calf leather is soft and cooling to the skin unlike our previous "micro fibre" piece which felt warm all the time. And may I just add that the smell of brand new leather is simply heavenly!! :D

  10. Being close to MRT will also ensure that your unit will be easy to sell in future. Location's impt, as you already know! So if you can afford it, it's a good buy.

I see what you mean about the dated decor. Maroon!!!!

The KDK fans are really quite expensive. I'm surprised. Maybe I'll scout around for other brands. Heard Elmark's not too bad. But I trust KDK - my KDK standing fans in my current place I've used for a long time and has been working swell.

I bought in June end...and prices had already shot up. I had to pay the premium for being so close to MRT. What can one do when valuation itself is 405K !!

So overall you got a good deal.

I say decor is dated because it has a very oriental feel to it. Teak , marble and maroon colours....

It is pleasant looking, but I want a more modern makeover for living.

56" KDK fan has 4 blades. 60" one has 5 blades. Both are 420$ + without installation.

I want plain looking fans which dont attract attention.

  11. Yeah i'm more inclined to let a contractor coordinate the whole thing. But good to weigh the amount of cost savings and the amount of work that needs to be done.

$180 for just cleaning the floor of the whole flat?

Pm me if u want his contact ;) Ya I still prefer to let contractor do all the coodinations :D

Hmm...I am thinking if i want to shift all my stuffs into the new house after taking over the keys, then i may not be able to ask the contractor to do whole house cleaning liao  If like tat then I will have to do it myself...at the same time save me $180 :P

  12. Yes, I should really get your advice on what kind of lights I would like to get for my own home.

Especially since you're absolutely the best, a colour coordination expert, and a professional finance person all rolled into one!

Look forward to what some of your constructive suggestions could turn out to be.

    glam?

    looks like rotten bee hive

really advise u to get something more modern

  13. i came late onto this, but hey, rapister might be in disguise to test us, yes. Test our patience :)

aiyo, be careful ur boss eye u ah :D

cover ur mouth when u laugh!

    hmm but maybe true lei.

rapister might be a deity in disguise?

he came to test us all ma. hahaha...

  14. Thanks, adrian! I hope it's not as pricey as it is unique and glam! :)

I haven't been able to find the name of these lights nor any shop which sells them...

Ynove, good choice of lights. It looks really unique and glam!

I was at Marxx on Sunday but didn't see this set of lights though.

Actually, alot of the bigger stuff like furniture/shelves/sofas at the Marxx store has already been sold. Only the smaller stuff remain.

  15. Didn't know they closed their Pemimpin showroom. Anyone has their contact and email?

Their website still shows only the Pemimpin address and contact.

    What's the Amoy Street address?

Yes I saw Objet selling them previously before they closed their Peminpin showroom. You can give them a call to see if their other shop (Marxx Residence) is selling them. They have transferred many of their unsold items over and are also doing a moving out sale now at the Amoy Street showroom.

  16. I passed by Bakerzin at Vivo recently, and saw this delectable pendant light. Anyone seen it? I haven't come across it in any of the furniture stores I've visited, nor any of the light shops at Balestier.

Someone said this could be at Objet. Gonna take a look soon. They would make lovely dining lights.

  17. Hi bergkamp

I bought the flat in late July, before prices shot up some more. Where I am, it's about 800m to compasspoint - at 306.

Why do you say your decor is dated?

My flat's previous owners chose a clean, classic theme, so it's nothing fancy, which is what I like.

I'm looking for a ceiling fan too! And looking to install AC in living room too. I remember you from the AC thread :)

The ceiling fan is for the days when the AC is not on. As for the AC, i haven't gotten it yet. Must find out what's the BTU needed.

56" ceiling flan - how many blades?

    Welcome Ynove.

Your floorplan very similar to mine...just that I dont have balcony. I am in 258 Compassvale Road.

My move in date is also around your date. Should start my own blog soon.

What block in Anchorvale are you in?

I think your flat price very good. I got mine at 405+8K. Only 4th floor unit but very close to Compass Point.

Mine is also move in condition, but the deco is quite dated. So need to do some reno to change the look of living room.

I would be installing two(56") fans in living room..even though I have two aircons in there. Not sure how many BTU.

Can switch on aircon sometime when guests are there, otherwise fan will do.

  18. Yep, am considering getting a contractor. Will get quotes to see if it's a viable choice.

And perhaps i might find a better deal yet for the ceiling fan and bathroom ventilation fan I'm looking for :)

Ynove, I see. I back tracked your thread & saw the things u wanted to do. IMO, it's better to get a contractor to help in some things, because it may be really difficut to coordinate. No harm getting a quote. Some things u can do independently, like painting, etc (will take closer look at ur list again cos I'm using hp.)

If I'm not wrong, $350 for 15whpa is for the fancy glass design mounted in front of your bathroom window, w/o need to replace or remove existing window. If i'm not wrong, they help you with electrical wiring too that's why. You can bring design to contractor to ask for similar design quote. But if the fan sells for $120 (I'm still not sure), it's $230 for glass, wiring & installation. Probably contractor can do a little cheaper. :)

  19. oh thanks, i shall go check them out!

The first hanging lamp i think you can try ordering online and ship to Singapore via VPost. I saw it and I like the white and green ones. Very nice but all my lights already installed liao so can only see and no buy. Very cheap also, only US$75!!!

    http://www.plushpod.com/products/Garland_Light-571-44.html

The second lamp I saw it on sale at Objet. You can try to call their Amoy street shop to see if they still have it. There were several red ones at the Objet warehouse sale but they have since moved out before national day.

  20. So you just bought your fan yourself and got your window contractor + electrician to hook it up for you? That would save up on the installation, but would take a bit of coordination on our part. We're thinking of not getting even a contractor and coordinating it ourselves.

    Thanks!

    2. cannot remember the model of the KDK ventilation fan we got for both toilets, but according to the salesperson, its the smallest one in the mkt, and suited for HDB flats - i think we got it for $50? must check the invoice on that. our ID helped us to fabricate the window panel so tt the ventilation fan could be mounted onto it; just buy the fan, and get ur window contractor to do it for u - saves u the installation! just remind ur electricians to add the switch for the ventilation fan.

think we have pics of both the ceiling fan and ventilation fan on our t-blog; u can go take a look :)
