Flickering And Humming Of Downlights- Any Advice From Seniors?
lipton replied to pika's topic in Electronics & Electricals
Electronic ballasts will solve your problem. But get the better one, i.e. Philips EF-Efficiency. I can't find it though. The australian ballast is Atco? It's highly recommended but despite its fame, it inherits all the disadvantages of magnetic ballast. If you are game enough, change to electronic ballast on your own, save the manpower costs. -
Converting 1-gang Wall Power Socket To 2-gang

Thanks all. To convert 1-gang to 2-gang is one **** of a messy job. The electrician used a hammer drill and enlarged the 1-gang 'hole'. The mess, gosh. -
Changing Downlight Ballast To Electronic One
lipton replied to lipton's topic in Electronics & Electricals
Hi all, the electrician came to install the lightings today. I couldn't find the better Philips electronic ballast (HF-Efficiency) so settled for the lousier one - Philips EB-Economy. I asked for a 18w one but the store provided me with a 36w and said it can be used despite its higher wattage. The electrician couldn't get it to work, not trying to push the fault to him, but he couldn't figure out the connectors to plug in and even ask the store provided a manual. In the end, settled for the Atco magnetic ballast that came together with the downlight. He told me that the higher wattage rating will burn the 18w bulb, any comment? Also, he told me that the EB-Economy is for fluorescent tube and not PLC. If anyone can show a picture of how they connect their electronic ballast, I might try modifying it on my own. Anyone know where to get the elusive Philips EF-Efficiency ballast? -
I went to both shops, service wise, Lights Arcade is much better than lighting.com.sg. But price wise, lighting.com.sg is much cheaper. Since I know what I want, I just went lighting.com.sg straight.

The second idea sounded great! Don't really want to make any physical modification but using a raised platform to make it suitable as a bedside table is interesting.

Bought a few downlights yesterday and was given Atco magnetic ballast. One of the downlights would be used in the study room and I read that magnetic ballast causes the bulb to flicker and using electronic ballast would solve this problem. I called the shop and they do not have electronic ballast. I am thinking, is it possible to convert magnetic ballast to electronic kind? I searched through Philips website and it seems that the electronic ballast is pretty big, even bigger than the downlight itself based on the provided picture.

Thanks for the suggestion! But the height isn't very tall, might be hard to do so.

Thanks for your post. Is the poster coated with a matte finishing? How much did it cost you?

I was cleaning up my house to prepare for a paint job next week. Came across these 2 wooden chests (refer to image). It was brought over from China when my grandparents settle down in Singapore. It takes up quite a bit of space and I don't really want to throw it away. I was thinking of using it as a bed side table but my bed isn't low enough. Anyone has any suggestion how I can better use it?

Is it possible for the article to be framed up to be part of the frame itself? Not sure if i am making any sense, the article is mounted on a wooden board without any glass cover and coated with a matt paint.

Beware! Check Your Paint
lipton replied to kkyysky's topic in Renovation Contractors, Interior Designers & Suppliers Reviews
From my own experience, the painter used Maxilite metal container to store the paint. Reason being that the paint I requested for is not available in the amount required for the job, thus, they poured into a bigger container, i.e. Maxilite 20l metal container. It does not necessary imply that Maxilite paint was used. They even used some marine paint container (suppose to be even higher grade), does that mean they are giving me a higher grade paint? No. The very fact that light and space code was pasted on the Maxilite container, doesn't that already imply that they are not using Maxilite paint? -
Converting 1-gang Wall Power Socket To 2-gang

The room is rather big, as such it will be unsightly to use extension socket. If I am to route it around the wall, i will require 7m long cable. -
Converting 1-gang Wall Power Socket To 2-gang
lipton replied to lipton's topic in Electronics & Electricals
Yes, it's kinda weird. The aircon is shared and I have been using it for the past 5 years without problem. It is using the normal 3-pin plug not the 13A plug. This is the only single socket in my room and I am pulling it to another corner of the room for my side table. Weird. =/ -
Is the below reasonable? Lighting point and install x 16 @ 40 = 640 To install and conceal 2-gang power point x 1 @ 80 = 80 To replace existing 1-gang power point to 2-gang x 3 @ 30 = 90 Total : 810 After discount of $10: $800

Converting 1-gang Wall Power Socket To 2-gang
lipton replied to lipton's topic in Electronics & Electricals
Not quite sure, it's part of a package that consists of other jobs. Concealment too. Currently this single-gang power socket is shared between my aircon (single unit) and my computer. There is no way to split the 'load' right? -

The additional gang will require new wiring or tap on to the existing wire? -
I had recently moved into an old-style private house and the false ceiling is unlike what the common false ceiling. The false ceiling is made up of different boards. I have attached an image for easy reference. I would like to know is it possible to install downlight at the position which the 2 boards met, i.e. in-between the line? I have attached another image for easy reference. Downlight position depicted in red

Hi, my electrician provided the following quotation, is it reasonable? - Converting 3x 1-gang power supply switch to 2-gang with concealment - Install additional 2-gang power supply switch in room with concealment - Changing light switches (1-gang) x 2 - Changing light switches (2-gang) x 1 - Changing light switches (3-gang) - Changing telephone faceplate - Installing one lightning (lightning point already exist) - Installing 4x downlights (lightning point does not exist) I was quoted $350 for all.

Hi, Is it possible to convert 1-gang wall power socket to 2-gang? Currently the wall socket in my room is 1-gang and I wish to convert it to 2-gang. I will be engaging the service of an electrician but will be buying the sockets myself. Need to know if it is possible before I make my purchase. Thanks!

I was quoted $240+ for a 185 sq ft room. Walls will be painted with ICI light and space and normal paint for ceiling. Is this reasonable?

Where Can I Get Dimmable Energy Saving Lights?
lipton replied to a topic in Electronics & Electricals
Philips came out with a dimmable energy bulbs. Saw it at NTUC. Not cheap though. -
Hi, I got a quotation for $40 for a new power point by pulling an existing one from the corner of a room. Is this a fair quotation? It is for trunking. I had wanted to conceal it but was suggested against it by the electrician as he said the drilling creates fine dust which make the room dirty. I asked him what if I use newspaper to cover the part of the room for which the drilling is going to take place, he said that won't help much.
