Huh. Complicated ah =p. Aiyah, just remember thicker = better and more expensive Remember to schedule the aircon ppl to run piping/trunking before they do up false ceiling leh =p. And yah, impt to get your ID/contractor to come down and brief the aircon guys where to run trunking. Also keep in mind where you gonna put curtains/wall fixtures etc such that the trunking won't interfere. I forgot about curtains, now i'm having headache over my aircon window cz cannot go as per original plan to install curtain to hide it le. stupid me... >_<"

not how it's physically installed. I get that. But how does the wiring work =p

I'll just regurgitate (hmm this seems to be the catchword for tonight) what i posted in familyof4's reno t-blog; This is only my little compare and contrast of pros and cons of the various options we home-owners have for cooling our houses: Natural air: Pro = It's free!!! Con = Depends on weather and season. Hot natural air is the reason why you're even contemplating air-con in the 1st place isn't it?? Fan: Pro = cheapest of the cooling options bah. Con = fan only improves airflow. The air is still the same temperature, it's only the windchill effect you're feeling. Humidity remains the same too. Window Aircon: Pro = Easy to install. Mount and forget. Con = Not very cooling. Very loud! And may not be able to install on some windows Portable Aircon: Pro = it's portable, duh. Con = quite ma fan to setup. Exhaust must aim outside the window, means that placement is not as flexible as we thought (but still the most flexible outside of using fans). Also most systems to deliver water to it are quite ley cheh as well. Standard aircon: Pro = proven best in cooling. Con = the most irritating to install especially if your house is already all done up. Trunking needs to be laid following some strict rules and where they go will restrict your placement of furniture and home fittings. And in the end, the trunking/piping will be very ugly. Also the most expensive option. If you want to run an additional compressor on top of the old one, it is possible but you need to check how much current you can draw first. Old hdb unit don't have the current to support and system 3 + single split aircon setup. Newer ones should be no problem but still check with the authorities or experts anyway. As for how much cooling capacity you need, i suggest taking a measuring tape and go measure your entire area to be cooled. Not just the space you define as "living room" ok? must also add in the hallway and any connected space to the living room that cannot be cut off by any mechanism (curtain, door etc). Calculate the floor space to be cooled in sq ft and multiply by 65. Should give you an idea how powerful (in btu) an aircon you need.

How is this installed bigcat? ie, does it need to be plugged into a power socket and switched on to be used? or an electricity line is run to it? Cz most hotel hairdryer i use is those that auto on once you pick it up.

*edit* pet posted 1st, so i del my post. -
Nation Cool is not Natural Cool. Natural Cool has their own *building* somewhere in paya lebar and that's the only showroom they have. Near the Charles & Keith head office. Actually with regards to how much cooling capacity you need, it's all very confusing one. Some people advocate multiplying your floor area in sq ft by 65 (coolserve), some by 80 and some by 85. And to add confusion to it all, there's also some debate as to whether it is ok to oversize or undersize (a little!) your aircon fancoil. The official US (Air Conditioning Contractors of America association) stance is to undersize. Rationale being that aircon unit take awhile to reach peak efficiency. The always running undersized aircon will in the end use less energy than the stop-start oversized fancoil. Also, the always running undersized aircon will control humidity better than an oversized one. Lastly, *not* buying a larger fancoil than you need will of course save you some money! However, if you talk to people in the airconditioning industry here, they will always advice you to oversize. Their worry is that if the fancoil is not big enough, the room will not be cold enough. Also, most aircon techs in the showrooms will also say that undersized fancoils will keep on running and consume more electricity while the stop-start oversized aircon will not consume so much electricity as it is not running much of the time. And most singaporeans are not that adveresly affected by humidity anyway. (in fact we seem to be prone to dry skin!) Btw, when comparing aircon quotes have to also check how thick the insulation they are giving you, and how thick is the copper piping. These affect the price alot. Insulation thickness sizing comes in 3/8" and 1/2" usually. While copper pipe thickness comes in either gauge 23 or gauge 24. Smaller gauge number = thicker copper pipe. Thicker insulation = less chance of "sweating" or condensation. Thicker copper piping = better cooling efficiency. Also, which gaincity you go ah? When i went to GC in CCK earlier this month and asked for 9k+12k+18k setup, they don't have leh. Tell me only have 9k+9k+9k or 9k+9K+21K. Pricing also seems to have come down leh. Earlier this month 9k+9k+9k from GC already cost 2900++ leh.

haha =). Thanks for the compliment but actually electrical is the *weakest* part of my training =p. I always fail it one. That's why when i knew i was going to do reno, i went to really mug the electrical stuff. The lighting stuff actually i can only give design advice. Just regurgitating from the design textbooks i borrowed from the NUS library. The same ones our locally trained IDs studied/use =p. The really technical stuff i'm still at only layman level. Haiz, speaking of delivery, I'm also a lil worried about what's gonna happen to mine when i'm finished also. See how lor. Glad for you that at least the problem with HN seems to be solved le. Surprised that Asia Excel gave u trouble though. All i've read/learned about them is all good. Especially when served by Desmond from balestier branch or the boss at imm. Whatever the case, jia you and always look at the positive side of things!

Haha. Pet beat me to the post. Was strictly staying off this board cz i usually don't believe in troll feeding one, but that last one that caused pet to respond like this set me off as well. Was gonna write something similar to pet but more coarse one. =p Chinese not good enough for our emotions lah pet. Need to use hokkien one. The type of hokkien army boys (because they don't really know what it means and think it's cool), and prison birds (who really *do* know what it means apparently) use 1. Lastly, I have got to scold some people. IVY, B_D, AUBREY!!! All of you newbies to using forums isit???? Never see these type of people before one isit? They have been around since the days of BBS ok and these people are called TROLLS ok? And what are trolls? They are people who go onto forums posting garbage and shooting off their mouths without thinking and with the full intention of inciting people one. And when you respond, they get off on it! YES YOU! I CAN SEE YOU WITH YOUR PANTS UNDONE AND YOUR WHITE SPLATTERED SCREEN YOU TROLL!!! Stop it before you get all crossed-eye from too much action!!! So people, please STOP FEEDING THE TROLL! (eh joke joke one ah. I'm not really angry at you guys ok? =p ) Ok, i'm now going to go back to my usual practise and ignore trolls. Have fun guys! =) -
the promoter i ran into promoted the panasonic washer, panasonic tv, hitachi fridge, and dyson vacuum cleaner to me. Hard to tell which brand she belong to =p @santay: thnx for the tips bt the fridge. will see if it can help out my SIL

at least you know your maid never short-change you. really "kut lat" =p

@pet: my parents running daikin system 3 inverter (R22). And europace window aircon iirc. aubrey, you need the inox cream ah? My mom bought some cream to clean SS things from Desmond when we were at Asiaexcel to buy my sink/tap/hob/hood package. Is it the one in a big white tube (like the ones for facial cleanser) with big wordings on it? if you need it maybe i try to pass you some of it this weekend bah?

Actually, other than the autoclosing function, panasonic seems to be the more advanced fridge in every other respect. More efficient inverter, LED vegetable compartment, better adjustable shelving. But the 1 place where hitachi wins out is enough for careless me and wife to decide on it le. =p

Can do a flap for the box up? Do share the pic!

actually i know the locations. just wanted to check the opening hours without having to call them..
-
ok. But just to let you know lah. Window is less efficient leh pet. Cooling capacity must really be well matched especially for window aircon. Plus it's also very noisy. I have both standard aircon and window aircon in my parents' place and i can tell you i much prefer standard aircon for its quietness and good and even cooling. Even though installation is a hassle and the piping is **** ugly! =p

>_<" dots lor.... your stomach rule your brain aready lah. go and feed it before it starts thinking about even more exotic food =p

Eh? who is this ah liew? i thought you mentioned ah di doing your carpentry now? *confused* I'm sad to hear that you seem to still be having trouble with carpentry. Hope things improve for you soon. Hang in there and jia you!

That's what i was talking about regarding the current =p. Another reason why you would want to use 3+1 is btu (cooling capacity). Say using a system 4 with a 8.9kW compressor running a 2.5kW+2.5kW+2.5kW+5k setup. If you turn on all 4 fancoils together, all 4 fancoils will not be able to perform at their peak cooling capacity! 2.5kW+2.5kW+2.5kW+5kW > 8.9kW. They will be running less than max and it could be potentially not cooling enough. Which will just be a waste of electricity. A system 3+1 can eliminate this problem. 7.5kW compressor running 3x2.5kW fancoils and a single split aircon system. You can read the singapore air-con blog for more information. Oh, other than window mounted, maybe you can also consider portable air-con?
-
Anyone knows if Choo Chiang sells adjustable downlights? And how much it cost if they do Also, does anyone know their opening hours? Thanks!
-
Autoclosing door in that if your door is not fully closed (and too far for the magnet to catch), the hitachi fridge (as well as the mitsubishi W-class) have the ability to pull the door shut. The panasonic doesn't have this function. Thanks for the headsup as to where to go!
-
The panasonic one is not just bigger. Take the wattage needed by each fridge and divide by their respective capacity and you realise the panasonic one is actually more energy efficient. However, the panasonic one doesn't have auto-closing doors. Being that me and my wife both very forgetful/clumsy ppl we decided not to take the panasonic due to that lack. Which best denki and HN you saw it at? I want to go and check it out physically before i commit to buy. Actually i don't like F&P fridge. My SIL using it for past 8 years and since four years ago her entire freezer compartment is iced up. Icicles and frost everywhere. Very jia lat and ugly... >_<"
-
Was aiming the previous model, the R-SF42XMS which was only 2 ticks. Not bad. You went best denki isit? I realise all the best denki fridge promoters pushing hitachi leh. but it really does seem quite good lah. Where did u see the YMS? it's new and most stores don't have it on display yet.
-
If i'm not wrong, you'll have to check the current needed by the compressors versus what your hse can supply. if i'm not wrong, old hdb flats don't have enough current to support 3+1 most of the time...

Oh i see. It's the PG part that attracted me so much =p. Does it attract fingerprint/dust easily? The sample in the EDL catalogue sure does.
