  1. I solved the problem in my head le. get 2 sets. i choose 1, she choose 1. both happy le. =p i just hope she find something she likes in robinson. i know what i want already. =p No lah not angry already lah. just sianz 1/2. I love my baby too much to be angry with her for more than 30 minute. (mushy, i know. please puke if you need to =p )
  2. Er, just curious (and confused). But this is actually the first time i'm hearing of other people other than uncle giving quotes for reno. If we're doing reno with uncle ah soon, shouldn't he be the one quoting?? Oh and by the way, objectively speaking, I think ncy sparked off this whole debate because ermm... i think ncy you misconstrued the meaning of, as well as misused two words. "overrated" and "idolise". Actually, both words are usually used in a derogatory manner in proper english. Especially "overrated" (it's quite a flippant word that actually has no positive meaning...). Reading your followup reply, the word you're looking for should probably be "over-exposed" but even then it's not acutally a very good synonym to what you wanted to describe... not unless you wanted to signal the intent of treating uncle as a celebrity... >_<". yowetan on the other hand has used "overrated" in exactly the way it is supposed to be used. In this case he has elaborated that uncle is overrated in terms of pricing. we know ppl round here usually rates uncle as amongst the cheapest contractor and now yowetan is saying that this rating is unwarranted or appraised too highly. "idolise" when used in conjuction with an object signifies blind adoration/devotion/worship. No offense to the pious amongst us but all three of those meanings require some sort blind faith and well, some inability to be objective. And the implication of that well... might be alittle bit offensive. However, i don't think nyc meant any of these negative things in his intial post, so let's just all chalk this one up to miscommunication and move on. As an aside i chose uncle but i never considered him the cheapest. I notice some of his items are cheap but some are a bit expensive compared to others. What won me over though is that he is one of the contractors with the most "ideas" whom i have met. And more importantly, i can talk him into adding more stuff at no cost =p. On a last note, i think it's sad that on RT only Mr Yeak, Uncle and Ho Bee are mentioned with any frequency. Would those who have positive experiences with other contractors also post up and recommend more? However, i think most ppl start to drift away and leave RT after their reno finish. Hence this does not happen. IMHO, Mr Yeak, Uncle and Ho Bee are so popular on RT simply because of Rondy, Angel81, applefreak, ilmare612, mace, pinkpetter. Those people who have completed their reno aeons ago but who are weirdly enough still hanging around renotalk (yin hun bu san or dead spirits refusing to reincarnate for the hanyu pinyin illiterate =p). They share their experiences, help newbs with their queries, and it's natural that newbs gravitate towards their contractors too when these people's t-blogs are almost constantly bumped to the top of the lists. I think no one will complain if more good and cheap contractors are posted up and shared. But if any contractor really want to shine on RT and attain the same exposure as the above 3, they would probably need to run into a client who is gonna haunt this forum long after his reno with them is done. =) (hmm my MIL just came and told me tonight that her opposite door neighbour who is on very good terms with her is a contractor. And apparently she thinks that he's not retired and still in the trade. Apparently he did the reno for my MIL's friend a number of years ago. Did it up all stylo-mylo at only 10k. He refused to make a profit on the deal on account of my MIL... thanks mum, for sharing this with me after i've okayed uncle and chosen my living rm tiles... ) And oh yah. I know i'm crazy. typing this looooong post up at 4am in the morning. what can i say, my day ended badly and i felt looney enough to do this hahahahaha.....
  3. Heh. Ours is equally small. And fridge is going to protrude in a very ugly manner from the rest of the cabinets. Hope it turns out well too. Lucky i don't believe in FS so much. =)
  4. Thanks for the info ivy and aubrey. Had a long and tiring day today (with a little bit of unhappiness towards the end). Only ended just now. Hijack your thread to grouse abit ah aubrey. Hope you don't mind =p Went to Sin lek in the afternoon with my wife then in the end just chose from sin lek. Lazy to drive around alot. Anyway only needed to get tiles for living room, and already decided the colour to be white. White homo tiles not much diff even if i go around other shops right? =p Eh, saw the wood-looking homo tiles at sin lek. A little bit gian to change my bedrooms' laminate flooring to this homo tile leh. Cause of all the trouble with water laminates have... I think my wife a little bit gian also. Will ask uncle to see how much extra he will have to charge us if we want to do it like that... After that went down to sia huat warehouse sale. Bought some stuff like vacuum jug, 2xcarafe, 1 pitcher with the ice tube thingie, and S/S cutlery. (later went to carrefour and robinson to compare prices for these items. wah lau eh, sia huat really cheap lor. Robinson got sell the exact same type of cutlery somemore. $10 for 6pcs. Sia huat sell $9.50 for 12pcs!!!) Having finished with that, I sent my wife to her department barbecue. Afterwhich i went down to Suntec. Checked out carrefour to justify all that spending in sia huat =p. Then went to check out Friven and Aussino for bedsheets. Not happy with what i saw so drove down to Robinsons. Bought two sets of embroidered bed sheets/quilt cover etc. I thought quite a good buy (over 50% discount) and pattern very nice (to me lah). Had to decide on my own cause my wife lazy to go and search so tell me to make my own decision about what bedsheets to buy. Later picked her up from her barbecue and showed her the bedsheets. She say only ok lah. Somemore commented that the colours i chose (1 set golden brown, 1 set silverish white. I thought fit our bedroom theme leh. modern baroque right???) very garish and why so expensive (embroidered ok. TC over 600 leh. Somemore made of cotton sateen ). Really made me feel very low lor. I spent nearly a month looking at bedsheets by myself liao lor. Spent nearly the whole of today running around the whole of singapore from west to east to west and then central and I get a comment that the bedsheets' colour too garish.... >_<" Tommorrow will go back robinsons and ask the sales lady who helped me if possible to exchange the sheets. If can, this time will pull my wife with me and force her to choose a set she lilke.... >_<""" @preciousjam: thanks for the info. Will go check out royal franco within the next two weeks
  5. just a quick check ah aubrey, uncle tell me to call ah di to get address of where to choose floor tiles. Ah di tell me to go eunos ave 7. Did you go there to choose your floor tiles too? Is the selection there good? I got ask ah di got any other location where we can choose floor tiles but he said no. does that mean we die die have to use floor tiles from this place in eunos? Paiseh ah, i realise the info might be in your thread already but it's very long and i'm leaving the house soon so looking for fast feedback just in case =p
  6. everytime i see your kitchen i drool all over again =p
  7. @aubrey: wah, so tiring to have to do everything alone. I feel for you, cause I've been doing that too (running around, planning, and buying stuff alone ) But lucky that at least from next week onwards my wife will finally be free to help me out. As for the free gift, I would only get the LCD tv only if i have an appropriate location to place it. 22" is really small you know. Only slightly bigger than a computer monitor! The optimum viewing distance for that (to get maximum viewing pleasure) is less than 1m, and that's is nearly around half the length of a standard bed. I would get the home theatre myself. Imagine cozying up to a nice movie on friday nights with a loved one/family/friends. Just rent a DVD/bluray, turn off the lights and on your TV+home theatre and you're going to save around $10+ every week on friday night entertainment =) @smallyboy + preciousjam: does royal franco also sell cooker/hoods/bathtubs/ceiling fan? Prices for these are also competitive? Can't remember from whom i heard from in this forum. 699 for sink, tap, cooker, hood from asiaexcel. Not even sure if that promo is still on =p
  8. haha. i get what you mean =). I like those glasses too. But i don't see much use for myself personally =p. See if i can find time to go down this weekend with the wife. Maybe we can find what we want (or maybe get tempted to buy the glasses ourselves too =p)
  9. heh. thanks for the information mrspiglet. =)
  10. Just want to findout smallboy, they got sell those type of korean cutlery anot? I'm looking for those korean stainless steel rice bowls (with cover), spoon with long handles, and chopsticks . My wife and i very gian for this type =p
  11. Can can. Heh. I was just feeling a little bit lazy. Today spent an hour plus going over my quotation with uncle asking him about details until i v. tired le. =p About the wallpaper, check this thread out: http://www.renotalk.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=19582
  12. eh? I thought older generation will not want white one? My parents and elders all keep saying will turn yellow, hard to maintain etc. =p Your parents very chic ah. Even kitchen also want to hack hack hack create open concept =p
  13. wootz =) Good. Since uncle did yours this way, he should know what to do for mine too =p Thanks for sharing the info asugama
  14. Can ask question? Regarding installing citygas gas heater, those new hdb flats already have hot and cold piping already right? So no need to spend extra $ to install hot piping right? Citygas heater is a central heater for the whole house right? So I only need one switch to on it right? Cz I'm thinking of using the two heater points in both my bathrooms to hook up to the bathroom ventilation fans if i use citygas heater.
  15. Question: I read somewhere that bathroom ventilation fans work best if there is a suitable amount of space around your bathroom door so it can suck air in from outside the bathroom. Am considering to use bifold or Pd door in my bathroom, will the ventilation fan still work? (cuz i think the entire doorway will be blocked by both these doors...) Thanks in advance
  16. thanks for getting back to me. Guess I'll go approach joanna when i go there to purchase my tv console then. =)
  17. I'm doing it too, that's why i'm asking asugama =p
  18. You just solved my living room lighting dilemma!! Er. Abit stupid to ask but do you mean a length of mirror was installed on the wall? Got question to ask, when you mount the mirror to the wall, it's protruding out right? If i'm not wrong this will be your dining area right? Aren't you worried someone may push their chair too much and bang into the mirror?
  19. Glad (and also abit relieved) that the issue is resolved for you aubrey! Hope the rest of your reno goes smoothly!
  20. Yep. One of the reasons why i want it =). Not buying it now though. The panasonic rep at best denki great world tell me they are going to get a fair going at great world around June 10. I'm going to get my panasonic TV, panasonic fridge, panasonic home-theatre-in-a-box, hitachi fridge and phillips vacuum cleaner altogether then. The promoter promise to get me %discount off every single item plus free installation/delivery . Now just have to periodically call back to check and make sure 42PY800H still in stock. Wah, all of you going to aubrey's house ah. Would like to ask permission to crash =) But I'll probably be meeting up with Uncle to finalise my reno plans =p
  21. Going to get NDSL from Sim Lim ah? Rem to check whether its a refurbished set by matching serial number on the DS with the one on the box k? =)
  22. For the LCD and Plasma debate here is another good site to check out -> HWZ Oh yah, rondy that site you mentioned is quite informative but lacks 2 piece of information. Onee of which is critical for SG tv users. First for any given size class, plasma TVs are almost always cheaper than the equivalent sized LCD tv (please do not consider the god of flat screen: the pioneer kuro, they are in a price class of their own =p) Second, for a given price range (and proper viewing distance), plasma TV almost always outdoes LCD TV in displaying SD (standard definition) programs. This is important as mediacorp only intends to go full digital broadcasts only around 2013, so you will have to suffer teary eyes watching blurry Channel 8/5/channelnewsasia on an LCD for a number of years yet! That being said, whether plasma or LCD, or even HD-Ready vs Full HD really depends on your usage patterns (play alot of games, watch alot of Blu-ray, etc). So please do go readup the HWZ stickies in the link above. It'll really help you not just in selecting your TV, but figure out the best place to put your sofa in relation to your TV size or vice-versa!! On a personal note, I am aiming for the Panasonic 42PY-800H. Optimal for the sitting distance in my living room, great for all the free-to-air tv viewing my wife is addicted to, and good for my occasional gaming and blu-ray watching needs =)
  23. :muse: so does that everyone doing/did reno with Uncle have this type of wood for their kitchen cabinet?
  24. Hello Wakzool, Just like to check with you, how was your experience with winter intl? Me and the wife are very attracted to one of their TV consoles, but it's quite exp so want to do some checking up to prevent getting ripped off =p
