  1. bought from Barang Barang last year, waited 3 months for stock to arrive. It comes in 1-, 2-, and 3-seater.
  2. who will be using the common toilet shower? if it is not going to be used frequently, and the current one still works, I'd say jus live with it. I find it a good idea to restrict usage of shower facilities to jus 1 bathroom. less cleaning.
  3. "is tat a cushion beside the tray? " - coffee table is convertible into a 2-seater, or I can turn over the two cushions to become 2 trays. wat u see in the pix is 1 tray, and 1 cushion is for me to put my feet up. I like open space, bought this coffee table because of its potential as a 2-seater.
  4. coffee table arived a few weeks ago... my living room is now complete, albeit a little cramped. Am still trying to decide whether I should leave the coffee table there, or put against a wall. Was looking for glassware. went to Crossroads garage sale at Cairnhill CC on Sat, and found these cute glasses $0.50/piece! Final addition to the house coming next Sat.. my dining table. Quite excited about it. Will host dinner for 10 once it arrives
  5. tricky when doing bizness w relatives carpentry is v high cost, so good if u can save some $ there. But if u really scared, then get a reno contractor who can 'bao ka liao', and tell your father-in-law u r getting a good deal for it. but if u go through the number of blogs describing disatisfactory work, u may not find that a good idea either. you can get individual contractors in to do separate jobs if you have the time to jaga and coordinate. You look like you need someone to do bathrooms & kitchen, carpentry, grills, and an electrician. Possibly, a painter? that's not a lot. You don't need an ID, cut out the middleman cost. Why don u start a blog in the renoblog forum, can get lots of advice there. My reno shifu can do electrical & painting; he's a jack of all trades, but no quality control, so must be quite chin-chye type to accept his work quality. Can giv u his contact if u want. I ddn't have a lot of prob w colour & furnishing, cos I don't go for hi-gloss/metalic/glass look anyway. Most of the furniture are existing stuff that I brought over from previous home. With wood, you either go for a more tropical look, or a clean spartan look.
  6. I was told that it is better for all kitchen and bathroom lights to be covered with casing, avoid exposed bulbs. Cooking fumes and moisture will cause faster deterioration of the bulb and the bulb holder, if they are exposed. This kitchen light installed by the previous flat owner really met the approval of my reno shifu. He was full of praise for it
  7. your parents quite modern eh? I always thot older people would cook to ensure healthy nutritious meals are on the table. I feel older and more traditional than your parents ... I cook, my son & I sit down to meals together.. no TV, computer, reading during mealtimes. must have "how was your day" kind of conversation
  8. My coffee table quite cute, is this model, but two-seater. Need to keep it to provide more seating when I have frens over. So boh-bian, keep lor. My wooden living space Dining space with ceramic tiles
  9. I was married, now happily single. Best of both worlds
  10. I am a Lami fan! I was so sad that they closed down. I went to their closing down sale, and paid $500 for 1 dining bench, and 4 dining chairs in mismatched designs. Recently got some of these pieces re-upholstered and am still using in my present place. There was a gorgeous Lami dining set offered on sale online some time back... I was so...oooo tempted, but I don need more furniture
  11. Pinkpetter's right on both counts... 1) it's my own door 2) the toilet user doesn't know I don't use that toilet, so it doesn't bother me. My son uses that toilet, and I don't think it bothers him. The only problem is w guests. I try to make sure no one is in the area when anyone is using that bathroom. Maybe I should reduce the level of lighting inside the bathroom? currently using an 18-watt energy saver I think. But pinkpetter, if that toilet is frequently used, you may wish to re-consider. My place has a little breakfast table built-in right outside the toilet, and sounds made in the toilet are v audible. Unless your toilet has good soundproofing doors, it may not be a pleasant dining experience if the toilet is well-utilized.
  12. reminds me of those eateries where there is a lousy table right outside the toilet Good thing you don't have the same prob as I have.. my common toilet doors are wood with frosted glass panels, but the frosting not opaque enough, can see what the toilet user is doing in the toilet (door is right in front of toilet bowl!) Fren exclaimed while his wife was using the toilet "wei shen me ni de men zhe me tou ming?"
  13. My house has parquet in 3 rooms, and timber strips in the living. It feels nice because the floor never feels cold. It also has a vey warm and cosy look. Will clash with ultra modern looks using a lot of gloss, metal and glass. Parquet tend to lend itself to a more natural environment look. Because of the heavy colour on the floor, if you are using wood finish on your furniture, you have to be careful what colours you choose to blend/contrast well with the parquet flooring. Also, because parquet has quite a distinct design, it can look very busy if you have a lot of small pieces of furniture siting around on the floor. My living area had just 1 sofa set & 1 TV cabinet. Recently, I added a small dark wood coffee table. Immediately, the space looked very cramped. I'm sure it would have looked fine if it was white tiled floor. Many people use laminates instead of tiles these days to achieve a wood flooring look, and what you have is far better than laminates, so why waste it? But parquet needs care. Place carpets & rugs over high traffic areas, never drag furniture on the floor. Keep the floor dry at all times. Use special cleaners and wood conditioners to maintain the wood. It is far more work than laminates or tiles. However, parquet in the dining area seems a little odd, because dining areas are high traffic area, and generally require more cleaning.
  14. Sorry, never gone to Clementi shop. I compared MGL with J&S and Showplace. MGL won hands-down. If you are doing rollerblinds, the range of materials quite standard, so can go for lowest quote. If you are on v tight budget, ask for ex-stock materials/fabrics. These are left overs from previous seasons, and usually limited in quantity. Can get good deals. I used it for my study room roller blinds, and it was a lot cheaper. If doing curtains, depends on taste, but I prefer the higher-end shops, cos they have fab fabrics in terms of colours and textures, but at high-end prices of course yah, v blessed to hv bought a house with so much carpentry done, and in good condition. From what I read in all the other reno blogs, it seems like carpentry these days v expensive.
  15. thanks xherion. but the curtains are not from MGK. Living room curtains are from J&S, Plaza Singapura. The bedroom curtains came with the house. The roller blinds are from MGL; 195, Lavender St #01-02. Eminent Plaza Singapore, 338758. Phone : 63920373. The staff there, May, is very helpful. A very good friend went to look around the 'wu jin' shops in Pasir Ris for me :-) She found them, $3 each. Even brought to my place to fix for me. I think I have reputation for being quite bo-chap Does it cost more because it is powder-coated? Her husband said they cost $3.40 at Tampines.
  16. I like sofa 1. Cosier. Sofa 2 lines up people side-by-side, v difficult to have a conversation.
  17. wow, I love the look. Makes me very determined to downgrade to 3-room flat when my son has flown the coop
  18. Requires careful planning. The previous owner of my unit put phone points in all the rooms, living area & kitchen, and cable points in 2 bedrooms, living and dining. So we are v well wired for broadband and cable TV. But suay, he didn't put cable point in study, and my broadband subscription is w Starhub. So cannot access cable broadband in the study, so ironic.
  19. I considered this one, but I felt it would be messy to use because each pole is controlled by a set of pulley & cable. So if you have 4 poles, you have 4 sets of pulley & cables hanging down from 1 side. Quite unsightly, to have so many strings dangling down. However, compared to the one I got (refer to my post earlier), where a single pulley controls 4 poles, less energy required to raise and lower individual pole.
  20. looks good. fairly neutral reno done, and the kitchen condition looks v livable. Congratulations on your new purchase. Great location to be walking distance to Ikea & hypermart.
  21. your bunnie corner reminds me of those Chinese empress who have silk screen or curtains around their beds. V romantic isn't your father's 'study' a little dark, and won't it get stuffy?
  22. "the most drastic is i need to seal off 1 bedroom door and reopen it right in the centre of my living room wall" - wah, that's v drastic! Somemore must be in the middle of that wall? What happens in future when you want to give each boy a room? Not nice to have room door opening out into the middle of the living room. That door will always have to be closed. What about putting your TV on the opposite wall?
  23. Yokine9a, where to buy the window handle? So cheap? Actually, I'm very fuss-free (read as lazy). I thot aiyah, window can still open and close with or without handle, why bother? wait until all broken, then I do something. But good to know where to go to buy when all broken same for toilet seat, not broken wat. can use that's why 'thinking' only.
