In this country cottage theme bungalow, one-of-a-kind vintage treasures and memorabilia pepper the rustic and oh-so adorable abode of this family. Director of a media company, Angus is not only the house’s owner, but the creative genius behind this lovely country cottage-style haven. When asked what the inspiration behind the interior’s style was, this father-of-one simply stated he wanted a comfortable and cosy space for his wife and child to come home to.

Tell us about the background of this house.
We moved into this two-storey house about six months ago. Although it’s almost 20 years old and was in pretty bad shape, we fell in love with its structure. We feel it simply needs a bit of makeover!
Which style did you opt for?
I went for the country cottage style as I wanted the interior to be stylish, but comfortable enough for everyday living. Vintage ornaments and collectibles sourced from our global travels were used as décor pieces to personalise and add charm to the space. What made you decide on this style then? I loved the vibe of vintage inspired and country styled cafes and restaurants, and I wanted to inject the same mood into my home.
What are your favourite and least favoured parts of the house?
I love the huge windows that let in natural light, the friendly atmosphere of my open kitchen, and the bathroom! In general, I’m rather satisfied with my entire pad, except for the tiny balcony. The small size limits me from planting a garden.
Why not stick to a new and furnished pad?
Well, it depends on what works best for you. Although new homes are already furnished, they are costly especially for someone who has a tight budget. Old houses are definitely more affordable, but you may face problems like water leakages and moulds. Plus, renovations might be pricey. All in all, you need to weight your options. I did encounter several issues with water leakage in this home, but its pros far outweigh its cons as it provided a wonderful canvas for me to craft a beautiful home for my family.
Any advice for homemakers who wishes to design his or her own home?
It’s important to understand that designing your own house is not a walk in the park. It is, in fact, a long and intricate process that requires patience, perseverance, as well as passion. On another note, if you have the passion, go for it! A design is successful when it suits the needs of the occupants, and no interior designer will understand your family’s needs better than yourself.
Any preferred brands?
I’m not particular about labels. As long as it’s a great piece of furniture and it’s priced within budget, I’d gladly purchase it. However, I do find myself drawn towards brands such as Natural Kitchen, Mama de Maison, Working House and IKEA.
Please share some tips and advice on DIY.
1. Be resourceful. Make use of softwares such as Sweet Home 3D to aid you with shaping the structure of your new home.
2. Be meticulous, and reappraise every single detail especially once the basic structure is confirmed. When I was working on my studio, I realised that the space wasn’t enough to store all of my work.
3. Be imaginative. Don’t be afraid to try out new ideas. More importantly, don’t be disheartened by failures. Amazing results will only arrive at the doorstep of the most committed and resilient designers.
