Living in a bustling city has its own advantages, everything you want or need is easily within reach. But of course there is a downside too, busy streets everywhere equates to an ample amount of noise pollution, especially if you stay near train tracks or a main street.
There are countless ways to eliminate noise, but some come with a huge price tag. Instead, we've rounded some of the simpler solutions, which cost much less than extreme measures like multiple paned windows.
1. Softer Surfaces
Instead of hardwood floors or concrete, opt for carpeted flooring, or purchase rugs to place in rooms nearest to roaring traffic.
These work as great sound absorbers, and will muffle noise circulating around your home. For extra noise cancelation, you can even add a sound absorbing padding at the bottom.
This is possibly the most common solution, one which can also mean a fun trip to the rug store, in search of ideal rugs which match the interior of your house.
2. Dividing Spaces
Sound loves to play in big spaces, so dividing up the area is an affective method of lowering the amount of noise bouncing around.
If possible, divide larger rooms into two with a wall divider, which effectively also creates an extra room and space for your home. If not, hang a nicely decorated curtain to split the area into two instead.
This way, not only does it give your home more privacy, it also cuts down on the noise by absorbing sound waves.
3. Fight Sound With Sound
Instread of decreasing the noise level in your home, turning to equipment which in turn raises it can actually be a solution. Items such as electronic fans, wind chimes or water features are options you can consider.
The sounds they create are pleasant, as opposed to revving engines or car horns produced from outside your window. Therefore, as ironic as this method may seem, it works because these new additions to your home help cancel out, or distract you, from unbearable, undesirable noise.
4. Lowering Your Ceiling
A lower ceiling causes less sounds reverberating around your home, and the best way to achieve this could possibly be investing in a false ceiling.
However, if that isn't an option, you can try purchasing bed canopies, or drape textiles from the ceiling down. This not only helps to absorb sound, it can turn into a really beautiful and colorful way of decorating your home.
5. Noise Canceling Headphones
If none of the above solutions are enough to drown out irritable noise, invest in a pair of noise canceling headphones. These work best when you need a quiet environment to concentrate, especially during study time or whilst catching up on work.
We suggest you take your time researching different brands and their reviews on the net, rather than hastily purchasing a pair. Better still, try them out at various stores, ensuring you'll buy an effective set of headphones which absolutely suit your needs.
