THE JAPANESE STYLE INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS WITH HARMONY, RESPECT, PURITY AND TRANQUILITY

Japanese interior design always brings a sense of harmony and tranquility. Under the influence of reconciling beauty and light and shadow effects, the home can be rich in design and colors. In the Japanese style interior design and materials sharing session that was held last Friday, the designer Andrew Lam shared his experience with Japanese design. In this article, I will introduce two items that are mostly used in Japanese design for your future home design reference.

1.Washi

Washi is a feature of traditional Japanese design and is one of the intangible cultural heritage of the United Nations. Washi is made by breaking plant fibers in a unique way. Among them, Gifu-ken’s washi was evaluated as a high-quality sliding door paper. It was widely used by the shoguns since the beginning of the Edo period. The Japanese understand that when light passes through natural materials and then enters the indoor space, it can create a good light and shadow effect, so most of the high-class buildings can see the traces of washi.

On many Japanese accessories, washi is also widely used in the Japanese panel screen. In ancient times, the Japanese placed the panel screen in front of the gate to create a sense of comfort through the lightness of the washi. Nowadays, washi is mostly used on windows or wooden sliding doors. Although washi gives a fragile feeling, it has different thicknesses, origins and usages. As long as it is used in a proper way, it will not cause any troubles. For example, a thicker washi can be used on the sliding door, so you don’t need worry about making any damages on it while walking around your home.

2.Tatami

Tatami is a product of the ancient culture. Since Japanese homes are generally small, tatami can save space for large pieces of furniture such as bed frame. Traditional Japanese tatami are usually made of wicks and have many different functions, including:

  1. High heat insulation and heat preservation
  2. Flexible and comfortable
  3. The scent of rush grass has the effect of relaxing nerves and purifying the air.
  4. High sound insulation
  5. Moisture absorption and moisture resistance

The Japanese style interior design tips

Tatami that is made from straw mats is difficult in cleaning. Japanese are cautious when sleeping on tatami. They rarely leave any stains on it, so their tatami can be used for a long time. If you think you are careless and don’t want to clean the tatami often, you can choose tatami that is made of fiber. These tatami mats are easier to clean.

Japan has small indoor living space as Hong Kong. How do Japanese who advocate simplicity and harmony highlight the design at home? They tend to use pastel colors as the main theme at home, and then place a distinctive furniture in the middle of the home as a highlight. Take Hiroshima armchair as an example, it is a favorite item for many interior designers. If you want to add Japanese style to your home, you can refer to this kind of atmosphere-building technique. With simple decoration and matching, you can improve your home style.
