Singapore may be open to designs and
brands from all over the world, but this city-state has a thriving furniture
design scene too. Fuelled by dedication and passion, these designers have
embraced the creative profession. Here are five furniture designers who are
making their mark locally and internationally.

eponymous multi-disciplinary design firm and also the co-founder of furniture
store Grafunkt. A veteran in the design industry, Nathan has received numerous
accolades, thanks to his tenacious pursuit of design excellence. These include
a master’s degree in design and the Red Dot Concept Design Awards for two
consecutive years. In 2008, he received the coveted President’s Design Award
Designer of the Year, an award that recognises Singapore designers from all
creative disciplines.

Eindhoven. There, he met designer Francesca Lanzavecchia. She is now based in
Italy. Hunn and Francesca’s work has made waves across the world. Since the
company’s founding in 2009, they have worked with international clients such as
Nodus, De Castelli, Tod’s and Mirage. Their collaboration with Singapore
furniture retailer Journey East has produced two series of PLAYplay, a

modern-day design sensibilities. The SHANG System, a storage system inspired by
Ming Dynasty design elements, has won the 2014 President’s
Design Award and the Golden A’ Design Award in Furniture, Decorative Items and
Homeware Design in Italy in 2016. The modular

Part of a family that has built a furniture manufacturing company, Koda, Julian spent much of his childhood days observing how furniture pieces were made. This early experience sparked an interest in design. He got himself trained in industrial design in Melbourne and, in 2012, launched the furniture and accessories store Commune. He heads the design team, which works with designers from all over the world. The brand offers furniture across four design styles: industrial, mid-century modern, modern minimalist and modern vintage. Today, Commune has over 40 stores in Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and China.
