Choosing the right mattress is like choosing your partner. It is something which you will have to live with for a long time, spend more time with than shopping or watching soccer games, and therefore finding the right one is the key.
A right mattress needs to be able to support your body in a neutral position, one in which your spine has a nice curvature and your buttocks, heels, shoulders, and head are supported in proper alignment.
To find the right one, you may wish to consider the following three factors:
1. Size
If you have the physique of an NBA player, or have the tendency to kick your partner off the bed while you are asleep, it is important to get a right-sized mattress for your need.
Mattresses come in various sizes and lengths – twin, full, queen, king; extra long, twin xl, full xl, or even customized.
2. Support
A right mattress needs to be able to support your body in a neutral position, one in which your spine has a nice curvature and your buttocks, heels, shoulders, and head are supported in proper alignment. If the mattress is too firm, it will push on your body’s main pressure points and take them out of alignment.
On the other hand, if the mattress is too soft, it will fail to provide your spine with the support it needs. Therefore if you have spine or back problems, look for a special mattress topper for back pain and you’ll find ones best suited for you.
Remember also to consider your own physique (especially your weight), and perhaps that of your partner, in finding the right mattress. The heavier you are, the more likely you will need a firmer and more supportive mattress. You have found the right mattress if you feel like you’re almost floating when you lie on it.
Mattress come in various forms, each offering a different type of support and varying in price. The most common form of mattresses are:
- Innerspring mattress: The gauge and amount of coil in an innerspring mattress will determine its support. A lower gauge means thicker coil, making it firmer and offering more support.
- Foam mattress: The density, firmness and thickness of a foam mattress will determine its support. There are two types of form mattress, namely, memory foam and latex form. Memory foam mattress tends to retain heat, while latex foam is more breathable. Do choose the one that suits your needs.
3. Quality
Although branding may be determinative of what makes a right or good mattress, it may be wiser to go for those that had already established for itself a good name. This ensures stiffer quality control and credibility.
Finally, remember to ask for a warranty when you purchase your mattress so that you may get a refund or perform a one-to-one exchange in case of a faulty mattress. Always check before checking out to ensure getting that one and perfect one.
