Brick Yard 33 ⅓, otherwise known as BY33 is a nostalgic space, and for good reason. Previously a club for American soldiers to gather, have a drink or two and rest their weary bones, the Brick Yard 33 ⅓ had seen better days.Tucked away amidst the vintage district of Yangmingshan, Taiwan, the monument previously known as the Grass Mountain Teen Club had fallen into ruins until HC Space Design came along and gave the magnificent building a much needed facelift.
During the days of the Cold War, US soldiers spent their free time at this place in an attempt to gather some respite from the scourges of war-by lounging around the game area to outdo each other in a game of darts of foosball, listening to records on the jukebox, reading or engaging in some quiet conversation. Today, Brick Yard 33 ⅓ is a public space where people can eat good ol’ Southern food, reminisce the past with some golden oldies’, and generally soak in the atmosphere.
Old-World Industrial
HC Design Space respects the history of the site, which is why they chose to restore the exterior to match its previous bricked facade. Materials from a bygone era such as timber beams, retro tiles and brick walls are utilized during reconstruction, thus lending authenticity and simplicity to the space.

The interior of the Brick Yard exudes a rustic, retro vibe which invokes a sense of wistfulness despite its contemporary context. Quaint artefacts such as phonographs are placed abundantly throughout the various rooms to infuse a sense of variety.
Communal Spaces
The Brick Yard houses several venues of interest such restaurants, bars, and music area in order to engage with and foster a community of performers, musicians and other individuals who can assist in boosting the local scene. Each venue of interest is unique in its own way, and each has a story to tell.
History Showcase Area
The showcase area feels like a slice of life from the Cold War era, frozen in time. With its rural-style walls, gritty flooring and yesteryear-styled decor, the space truly lives up to its name, giving viewers a glimpse into life from a bygone era.
The Dining Area
Sleek furniture, wiry decor and charming colours schemes-what’s not to love about this quirky dining room? Imagine eating a scrumptious meal or a cup of steaming hot coffee in this refurbished, factory-style restaurant.
The Bar and The Stage
Fancy a drink? Who wouldn’t enjoy cracking open a cold one at the rustic elegance that is this bar? While most bars are almost clinically clean and shiny, what makes the bar at the Brick Yard unique is its wooden decor and simple, yet aesthetically appealing furniture. If you’re feeling brave enough to belt out a drunken ballad in front of an enthusiastic crowd, the Stage with its glorious pendant lightbulbs is all yours. If you want to perform with your band or throw the coolest party in town, the Stage is where you need to be.
A Magnificent Patio
Fancy a slow walk with your significant other, or a dip in an Insta-worthy pool? The lush green area adjacent to the Brick Yard is a truly picturesque place to be taking a light stroll, or enjoying a refreshing swim in.
