Our homes are most likely the most important place in our lives, so it’s only natural that we strive to make them luxurious. No matter how functional the current design of your home is, from time to time, we all want a little bit of change that will make our space both look and feel amazing. Home improvement is an endless pool of ideas and there is so much you can do to make your home look luxurious and charm all your guests. Here are a few ideas that might spark the imagination.
Glam up the Walls
Plain old painted walls are a safe choice, that’s true, but they are also boring. To make your home look more glamorous, think about adding crown moulding. It’s one of those things that instantly make your walls look more finished and have a luxurious vibe, and this project can be done in a weekend, without having to spend a fortune.
If you’re somewhat of a handyman, you can take the task upon yourself, but if you’re a beginner, the corners can give you a little trouble so calling in a professional might be a better idea. Another idea is to find luxurious-looking wallpaper which will brighten up your room.

Take Down Barriers
If your house was built some time ago, chances are the open plan was not a hot topic yet. However, creating an open layout with your living room in the center not only opens up numerous opportunities for eye-catching arrangements and designs, it basically changes your family’s lifestyle, on the whole, making the home feel much more welcoming than when it was strictly divided by walls.
Now, taking down walls is by no means a small feat. First, you’ll need someone to evaluate whether those walls are load bearing – but even if they are, you can consider columns that will serve the same purpose. Nevertheless, keep in mind that this project will likely be costly and you’ll need to organise the appropriate funds to cover this.
If you already have a few loans on your hands (and, let's face it, in today’s economic climate, who doesn’t?), you might want to explore the option of consolidating the same to see how much you can save and put towards the project. Upon consolidation, you might even be able to negotiate a refinancing option on your existing loan which can further help the cause by adding funds towards the undertaking.
Small Touches
Still, if you want to keep this project low-key, there are plenty of small things you can implement. One of them is bringing in texture via materials , fabrics and patterns in all forms. Choose new throws and throw pillows carefully while paying attention to your color scheme, and they will instantly make your sofa look brand new.
Textured rugs are also a must, as they bring softness and warmth into even the coldest of spaces. Placing them strategically will also help you create smaller zones within larger spaces.
Finally, you might not have thought much about your curtains or drapes until now. However, their length is of crucial importance – make sure they are long enough to hit the floor for maximum effect.

Elegant Decoration
The decoration is, without a doubt, the most fun part of any home improvement project, still, you shouldn’t go crazy with it. Minimal is always more elegant, which means you have to be very careful and selective in your choice.
Make sure mirrors and large art pieces are part of the decoration – they bring so much life and class into the room.
Other than that, you might want to stick to the “rule of threes” that brings in some balance without looking forced. If you have your eyes on more than three items, make sure you group them in three groups for the same effect.

Don’t Forget the Kitchen
While your main focus might be the living room, the room that actually sees the most traffic is the kitchen – and if you opted for an open plan layout, it’s all the more reason to treat your kitchen to some small upgrades as well. These can range from adding an expensive-looking white marble backsplash or eye-catching countertop to brighten up the room all the way to changing the hardware, that is such a small investment for such a big effect. For hardware, you can even go for stylish colours such as rose gold that is so popular now and it will make your furniture look brand new in a blink of an eye.

As you can see, turning your home into one that wouldn’t look out of place in a catalog can be as cheap or expensive as you make it. While the small changes certainly bring in some glamour, there is no doubt that bigger projects such as creating an open plan have the potential for a true wow-effect. Choose whichever projects you like and make your home look luxurious!
