It's never fun to see your list of chores pile up, especially when you're already tied down by an endlessly hectic schedule. There are efficient ways to keep your place looking neat though, simple steps which require only a fraction of your time everyday, and here's how.
1. Clear Surfaces Daily
It's easy to give in to your lazy bones when it comes time to clean up after yourself, especially after an exhausting day. But even the slightest messes on top of tables and shelves look unsightly, so it's best to clear them right after use, or at least by the end of the day.
Leave a ten minute slot every night just for decluttering surfaces. Everyday before you turn in, make sure whatever messes you were unwilling to work on earlier in the day gets cleared. This way the task won't add on to your current list of chores, because that would make it less likely to be dealt with after.
2. Allocate A Place For Everything
Make sure you have distinct storage areas for all your things, no matter how insignificant they may seem. It's best to categorize them and allocate a certain cupboard or shelves for each group of items. This allows you to keep things more efficiently, especially when you start getting used to their placements.
It makes storing your stuff away less of a hassle, which will make you feel more willing to get on it since it can be done in a flash.
3. Task Basket
Place a simple basket or container in every room, so each time you find yourself unable to finish chores relating to any room, put the related items into the basket or container and continue later.
What this does is neaten your place for the time being. Imagine having too many things to clear off a table but you're already late for work. You leave it be first, but when you come back the table isn't quite as functional since it's still in a mess.
Instead, if you had placed your items into the basket before leaving the house, you come back to a tidy table ready for use.
4. Always Bring Something
Create a habit of never leaving the room without carrying anything out of it. Let's say it's commercial break and you're heading to the kitchen to make some popcorn. Don't leave the living room empty handed.
Bring along a used mug to dump into the sink, or drop the newspaper back into your newspaper rack along the way. This makes clearing up at the end of your session in the living room much easier afterwards, since some of it has already been done midway.
After you begin to weave this habit into your life, you'll realize that cleaning up becomes much faster, and you'll feel more inclined to do it.
5. The Illusion Of Order
If you absolutely have no time to clear or neaten things for the time being, or if guests are about to arrive in a short span of time, you can try making your mess look like it's organized. Pile items in a stack neatly and then push them to a corner. Or straighten them into neat lines, instead of having them sprawled all over.
Although technically the place is still in a mess, nothing looks quite out of place anymore, and gives the space an illusion of being neat. It's a pretty efficient method in times of emergency!
