Hi All,

We'd like to share about Vincent from Supreme Laminates. We have earlier engaged Supreme Laminates to do laminates for our 3 bedrooms at our resale flat. Much to our shock and dismay, when we moved in in May, we discovered that all the skirtings had turned mouldy. Within 2 days, we discovered termite traces in 2 bedrooms and that they had eaten nearly all the room skirtings. We contacted both Vincent who was the salesperson and the town council about our problem. The town council immediately despatched their pest control to exterminate the termites. It took a whole of 1.5 months before the damage was controlled. By then, our bedrooms were in a mess.

During this entire period, we kept in contact with Vincent who was trying hard to seek compensation from his company on our behalf. When the termites were finally exterminated, Vincent linked us up with their Operations Manager to speak on compensation terms. However, the outcome was not favorable to us. We were very upset and communicated to Vincent on this issue. Vincent was very helpful and really fought for us as he feels that we have a really genuine and unique case. Through his persistence, we finally received a better compensation deal.

We want to commend Vincent for his excellent aftersales service and the professionalism he displayed throughout this incident. Freak accidents can happen to any good products but having a great salesperson who follows through even when things turn sour can make a whole lot of difference!

Hi Jarbebe,

I am having this fear that termites will eat up the laminates for my whole house when I lay them too (hall and 3 bedrooms):notti:!!...I have engaged supreme laminates and intend to do my reno only in sept or oct as im only shifting in in feb next year...earlier when i surfaced this issue of termites eating up laminates to my supreme sales person, he informed me that termites will not eat supreme laminates as it is hardwood and also because it has been chemicalized and termites dont eat up chemicalized woods..

Now Im getting soo worried to see that you have actually encountered that problem!! Were the termites already present in the flat and it was overlooked when the tiles were laid or they just started growing on the laminate?

Englighten me! Thanks!

Hi,

I will be engaging Supreme Laminates to do my 3 bedroom. The sales person who will be servicing me is David. I am worried after reading your write up. Will like to know more about the termites. Does it occur from the laminates that Supreme brings in? Btw, how is Supreme workmanship? Actually, I engaged them on impulse. The sales person is very convincing. Now, I am rather worried about their workmanship and quality of their work + those termites too! Another feedback that I got from some of the IDs are that they would always measure extra for your bedroom.. is that true?

Hello Astra08 and Malui!

Hehe... I was recommending - not putting fear! :yamseng:

Anyway, before laying any laminates, it is better to engage your own pest control to do a preventive procedure. We overlooked this and really regretted and suffered nightmares. I had a friend who bought a resale and also laminated her floors but had engaged pestbusters prior to renovation because her neighbour had termite problems. After 2 years, no problems.

Nobody could determine the source of the termites. The town council pest control says it's the laminate. Supreme says it's the building. Everyone is pointing fingers and nobody was solving the problem. The termites were having a buffet feast with the laminate skirtings. There were no termite tracks / traces during the whole renovation process so that certainly did not help in pinpointing the root problem.

There are many theories... one was that the termite eggs were already present in the laminate skirtings but needed a 'prime' condition to hatch. Second was that the termites were already in the building and during the renovation, they are disturbed and hence attack the house. The third theory was that the termite altae (you know, the long-winged long body flying creature that likes to go near the white flourscent light especially swarming during weather changes), they fly into your house, shed their wings and go crawling to the corners of your wooden furniture or flooring looking for a mate and viola.... you've got yourself a 'cool' colony... (sorry for the sarcasm... but really hate the stupid termites) So it's recommended to have yellow lights - cos they very much prefer the white lights. And it is not true that only low floors will encounter termites... They will just crawl through the tunnels in the building to as far as they could to reach their food source - which happen to be wood, paper and fabrics. They also like dark, damp conditions so expose your house to as much sunlight as possible... Oh.. if you see black ants, congrats... most likely no termites 'cos they do not co-exist. Seal up all the 'holes' or 'cracks' in the walls / floors / corners because if the ants don't use them, the termites will. All buildings are susceptible to termites. Usually, a building is treated in the ground / soil before the construction begins. This will usually last about 8 - 10 years. Thereafter, it is treated based on symptoms, ie, only if they find termites, then they treat.

Actually, the termites did not eat the laminate. They ate the laminate skirtings. Because although the laminates are chemical-treated, the skirtings are not. So the termites will eat what is 'easier' to consume first before moving on to 'other' food.

After 2 whole months of all the ding-dong, we engaged our own pest control (because the town council one didn't really worked very well). We signed on a one-year contract for our peace of mind. Apparently, all the theories above can be true and it is impossible to prove which one is the culprit. So actually, it doesn't really matter if you've got laminate floor... as long as you've got wooden furniture, some preventive measures will sure go a long way to help prevent nightmares - even if they've got the best treated wood in the world.

By the way, Astra if you are installing in Sep / Oct and only moving in next Feb, please go back and air your house as often as possible. Because an empty house is open invitation to the creepy crawlies. I would recommend you install the laminate closer to your move in date.

Malui, we do not have issues with Supreme's quality. In fact, we are pretty satisfied with the workmanship and professionalism. It's just unfortunate we encountered this problem. As for the measurement, Vincent was very honest and charges according to what was the actual measurement. I don't know about David... we only have contact with Vincent and his operations manager.

Thanks Jabebe!

WHat a relief after hearing your comment on Supreme? Btw, David from SUpreme recommends that I put a black rubber on top of the foam before laying the laminates to get more grip. ALso, it helps to produce lesser sounds effect wen u step on it. Not sure, if it really helps. Do u lay the black rubber? ANother question is how much do the pest buster charge u? Thinking to do it before laying the laminates.

Hi Malui,

Er, we didn't put black rubber on top of the foam... Hmm, well, the floor does 'creak' every once in a while when you step on the floor. But it wasn't loud or disruptive for us... My personal opinion... not necessary...

As for the pest control, it's best you contact a few reputable pest control company to find the pricing best for you and also what is included. If you do a one-time preventive round, you do not need to get a contract like mine. I'm not sure how much that will cost though. My one year contract is about S$400+.

You can find out more information at FAQ: http://www.spma.org.sg/index.htm

You can also google around for pest control companies in Singapore. My friend engaged Pestbusters (www.pestbusters.com.sg). I engaged Rentokil. So do shop around and ask questions before you decide.

Hi Jarbebe,

That was a relieve...:bangwall: Malui..hopefully we dont have to handle problems like this...i am already soo cash strapped...and i dont want to think of my laminate being eaten up my termites!:(!!

I wanted to just put laminate flooring for my bedrooms..and use homogeneous for the hall...in the end, i had to laminate the whole house coz..mine is a new flat which has a flat cement creed (not the rough one which is needed to place homogeneous tiles). Thus, many contractors told me its better to put laminate as the cement screed is already there..if i choose to put homogeneous, than i have to give them hacking cost..for the floor to be made rough so that sand can be laid prior to the homogeneous laying.. in the end i decided..it would be best for me to lay the laminate for the whole house..i like laminate too..warm feeling.....just that i feel that i paid alot more....after GST since it was not absorbed..coz i got it from supreme laminates directly when they were having a booth at a megastore.....thinking it was cheaper...if only i had given it to my reno contractor, he would have done it for cheaper and coz he was absorbing the GST..and he told me he would have given me additional perks as well if i had taken supreme laminate under his reno contract....but neverthelss, the sales guy at supreme laminates is really very helpful and nice..i informed him of my termites fear and he told me his guys will personally come down to explain the chemical process that they usually do to prevent this.. what could be best done to prevent termite infestation....also, he does call me often to check out when im gonna start my reno...so at least he has not left me hanging..

Hoping that since mine is a new flat..(currently there is only cement)....there wouldnt be any problems..i just have to take extra care to ensure all this..sigh...its a low floor though...Jarbebe, can we conduct our own regular checks to ensure that there are no termites...or even if u check, it wont be evident until a later stage?

Jarbebe, will head your advice and do up my entire reno and then get supreme to place the tiles..closer to feb..heard it will only take abt 2-3 days for the entire laminate to be laid for my flat....and will probably let loose some black ants..and put yellow light..keke.

Usually you would think that the reno companies that advertise big, or have the best promotions, or the best visibility are the best.

My experience from Summit Design in May and June of this year has been great! We found out about them from an Expo at Changi. My wife and I had a few companies come and visit our condo on Grange Road. Summit Design provided the most professional, value priced reno and best follow up of all.

Our experience from the time they started reno till the end, and even their after reno service has been great! Sure there are some problems along the way, but my project manager William and his boss Victor always provided an empathetic, professional approach. Their positive attitude and good follow up made our experience better.

I am pleased to say our home looks great and my wife and I are very happy. If I had another home to renovate, I would not hesitate to go back to them.

Sincerely,

Low Chee Wee !!

Unfortunately, I do not have a URL address that the website requires to post pictures. If you like, you can give me your email address and I can send a few pics to you.

Sorry about that.
